@ Demi - Don't generally take suicide attempts seriously. I saw a LOT of my friends and acquaintances wangsting over the smallest things and then using cutters to cut their wrists like some kind of jigsaw puzzle. Usually its just steam.

@ Senpai - I just don't understand Tabane's point in spreading the cores. If she wants to experiment in peace and doesn't care about anyone, then spreading the cores is pointless.

Again, I highly doubt Tabane spread the core by herself in canon. Further: she's missing and don't make anymore cores after 4 years passed, and 467 cores are made. Everything she made after that is for her own satisfaction.

If anything: she handed Japan ALL the cores, and Japan distribute it to the world due to international pressure. Like say

"Meh, you want cores? Here, do as you wish. I'm going to play around as I like hehe"

Tabane can quit anytime, especially if she's bored. Point is, she didn't stop until Houki reach fourth grade.

There might be a concrete reason, or she simply enjoy it enough to do it for years. Can be anything, in the end Izuru is to blame

Also, this has been bugging me: Tabane's main reason for the nuke thing was because she was laughed at for presenting the IS. Thing is, going by the timeline, both Chifuyu and Tabane had to have been 14 when the White Knight incident happened. So no shit they didn't take her seriously - Would you take a 14 year old who says "I made the ultimate superweapon!" seriously?

I.S. is long developed before that, if my interpretation is right.

The actual name is 'Infinite Stratos'. It was originally created as a multipurpose power suit for space operations.

However, its development did not go as the creator had originally intended, but ended up being modified by the other mechanic specialists involved, into a 'war machine'. However, all the other countries designated it as a 'Sport' —a so called high performance— flying device.

Tabane-san introduced IS ten years ago, but at the beginning, no one recognized her accomplishments.

Nobody believed that it could 'surpass all current weapons'.

Some of them even felt that those words 'couldn't be trusted'.

Tabane managed to take it to logical extreme to the point of disbelief, thus the laugh. Also, she's most definitely not alone.

Around the same time, space exploration project is mothballed, and I.S. stop receive funding.

Thus

A year after the IS was introduced, an incident happened.

Well, it would be too weird to call it an incident, since there's nothing more critical than that point.

A hacker sent 2,341 missiles from all the countries in the world at Japan, making them unable to be controlled--and launched them all.

The whole world sunk into chaos and despair.

Point is, Tabane is part of a team. Space exploration is by no means small project, for all we knew they also try to develop a cheap spacecraft and building bigger space station.

I.S. development outpaced other sector, solely because of a 14 year old kid, hence the laugh and disbelief.

Also, anime rules. Genius kid always work for government in some form. Not logical, but consistent.

Honestly, so much can be expanded from three paragraphs above. Science wank, politics, even resentment of fellow scientist to Tabane.

In fact, I.S. fail o reach it's original goal because other sector don't develop fast enough, I'm not surprised if someone say

For the silent seven, they could keep up with Tabane... just that they had the same level of credibility as Tabane to the government but academically they were authorities in their respective fields.

In fact, finding those canon 'facts' (or personal interpretation of them), I think Iori's very existence don't make sense, hence long term plan and politik is within the new draft board. Lots and lots of chekovs gun.

Iori's reason is a bit different, he might be second only to Tabane, but in the end, other project failed to catch up. And since all government fund went to I.S. development after WK incident, he decided "Screw it, I need money and connection" and build his own mega corp in ten years.

Only now he can continue his work, the first clue is Dan and Ichika talking about space station construction resumed recently, in chapter 12.
