New Blade of the Immortal Anime

Blade of the Immortal is getting new anime.

Plot Summary
Quote:
Manji is an immortal swordsman, who has been cursed with eternal life. He has grown tired of living with all the death he has created. He has no skills other than those of killing, thus he forms a plan to regain his mortality: he shall kill one hundred evil men for each good one he has killed. The old witch who afflicted Manji with immortality agrees to Manji's proposition and Manji is set on his path to kill one thousand evil men. On his journey he meets a young girl, Rin, who has her own vengeance to seek against the sword school whose members slaughtered Rin's family. Rin and Manji journey together, each hoping to find some kind of peace. In their way are many varied enemies. Rin and Manji are almost constantly under attack and must learn to live their lives, avoiding being consumed by revenge.

I found myself chuckling often throughout the first two episodes. The amount of expositioning that characters just launch into almost entirely unprompted just made me laugh. I didn't hate it, though. It just sort of took me back to a time of older anime, which makes sense, given that the manga is about as old as I am. (And I never watched the first series based on it in full, but I had a rough idea. I remember really loving its ED song.)

Tsuda was the perfect choice for Manji. It sounds like he leans into the character naturally and it just works.

And the OP is great. I wish it had a flashier visual sequence, but the song kind of carries it, imo.

And I did not like ther OP song. The Engrish is just to cringy for me.

Ayane Sakura was also greate as Rin by the way.

And I like that despite the lack of resources studion compensated it with a style.

This is a Hamasaki anime alright, those facial expressions, focus on background sounds, the way certain visuals linger on pain. The beginning part of episode 1 (with Manji’s sister running towards him) was especially striking to me. Very cinematic feel.

Episode 2 was hilarious. The talkiness and fight scene in that artists’ home just felt.. manic, for a lack of a better term. Lots of interesting topics brought up also - Itto Ryu, the shogunate, and the nature of samurai. Stay tuned.

The show clearly has a low budget, but the stellar direction more than makes up for it. The atmosphere is amazing, the performances of the two main voice actors contribute to it as well. My only complaint is that it feels very rushed. They didn't even explain Manji's backstory properly, but I guess it doesn't matter much anyway.

Hearing the echoes of "rushing" is making me happy I didn't read the source before diving in. I enjoyed both episodes and I thought the pace was fine.

I enjoyed it a lot despite being a fan of the manga! Hamasaki’s directional style is always a feast for me.

Other than the way they info dumped Manji's past, the first two episodes didn't really feel rushed to me.

Yes, I am absolutely loving the directional style too. I don't even care if the staff is actually using to cut corners or not because looks so great. I'll take solid compensation in that case.

Not sure if the still cuts are due to budget constraints or more Hamasaki's directional style . He's like that too in Shigurui and Texhnolyze.

Episode 1 is superb, but episode 2's pacing feels like a squirrel that got injected with loads of caffeine . It obviously needs a breather in between scenes but the show decided to get the events rolling without any pit-stops.

That said, these two episodes are still a great adaptation. It's not breathtakingly beautiful and rich with details but nobody can't deny the artistry that went into these couple of episodes. The anime is "eccentric" as much as the manga is "eccentric" within its own medium. And just like the manga: it's not absolutely gorgeous but it's undeniably artistic.

Even though I would be lying if I say "I can't ask for more", I can rest assured that the showrunners at least understand the source material well.

I really think it's a bit of both.

I'm glad to hear that. I've become accustomed to truth that even best adaptation cut things but ti doesn't necessarily mean it is terrible because of it.

I particularly liked the use of repetitive single sounds in an otherwise silent atmosphere to create a really eerie mood. I'm massively impressed: The directing in this show really is amazing on a technical level.

I also think the pacing is really rushed though. The jump in episode 1 from Manji's recruitment to the pair confronting the three headed freak felt kinda a clunky and the second episode felt they just straight up crammed two episodes into one. First time I've ever used the playback speed function in my video player to slow it down. I feel like they should've just skipped the spearman and the painter story since it didn't seem all that important.

I hope Manji gets to show off some better swordsman skills though. So far it's just been him getting his arse handed to him and then literally stabbing them in the back when they're not looking. Not that I don't appreciate such dishonourable tactics against a prideful culture but he's even doing it against the samurai-hater.
