Evidence of water on Mars

“There is liquid water today on the surface of Mars,” Michael Meyer, the lead scientist on Nasa’s Mars exploration programme, told the Guardian. “Because of this, we suspect that it is at least possible to have a habitable environment today.”

Great! Now let's get on with the terraforming and training up some Undines...

How long until the pioneer spirit awakens once more?

Let's face it, if the USA spent half as much on NASA as is currently spent on 'Defence', then NASA could do a hell of a lot more to increase our knowledge of the universe.

As far as that 'pioneer spirit' goes, going to the moon got all the funding it needed because of the cold war and the need to beat the Russians. Don't get me wrong, it was a great achievement and I'm old enough to have sat up late with the family around our old black and white TV set waiting for the pictures to come in from the moon.
It's kind of sad that the US has had successive Presidents sound off about going to Mars, but not one of them has ever funded it.

Then again, if Putin wasn't such a dick, a joint US-Russia mission would be a great idea as both nations have a lot to contribute. Add in the ESA as well. A joint mission of all space powers would be pretty good from a diplomatic level, and split the budget.

When I were a lad, back in the seventies, it was expected that Mars would be the next stage in manned space travel. It still isn't, and that's sad. I read books in the seventies which told me I'd be having holidays on the moon by fifteen years ago!

Maybe we need a more advanced propulsion system to get there more quickly, for the sake of puny human meatbags. That seems to be the big problem with getting your ass to Mars (as Buzz Aldrin says) - it takes a long time.

Find something there people want, they will go.

Tales of gold drove man West. Tales of spice drove them East. What will drive them Up?

I wonder about that as well, since my primary email is Yahoo!, though I do have both a Gmail and Hotmail/Outlook account that I have recently linked with my Yahoo! Mail (Outlook's process seems cleaner than Gmail's, TBH - at least the folder structure and the dates are accurate) just in case that Mayer CEO would make an even bigger mess of her company.

Flickr and Tumblr seem to be popular enough to not be outright shuttered. I only hope Yahoo! Mail won't be merged with Verizon's services and will be kept separate.

Goodbye World: We’ve Passed the Carbon Tipping Point For Good.

Quote:
It’s a banner week for the end of the world, because we’ve officially pushed atmospheric carbon levels past their dreaded 400 parts per million. Permanently.

According to a blog post last Friday from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, “it already seems safe to conclude that we won’t be seeing a monthly value below 400 ppm this year—or ever again for the indefinite future.” Their findings are based on weekly observations of carbon dioxide at Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory, where climate scientists have been measuring CO2 levels since 1958.
On one hand I am sad for future generation having to deal with problems that will rise from this. On the other I am glad that first changes are going to happen in 100 years form now, long after I am dead.

'Web Of Trust' Browser Extension Cannot Be Trusted

Quote:
The NDR investigation discovered that while you have the WOT extension installed, extensive data collection is going on in the background. But WOT not only collects and records data on a per-user basis, it then analyzes and sells it on to third parties.
Well that just sucks. I've been using this extension for a long time since it was my first online defense to warn me if a site that i'm going to visit is unsafe or not. Looks like i have to find an alternative extension like WOT.

Unless they find a way to hyper market this as some amazing thing that makes people want to spend like 20-30% more just to get that last bit, but not sure they'd be willing to take the risk.
