I was pretty much nodding off and falling asleep the whole episode, until the end when they finally focused on Sawamura. Furuya is like a cardboard background character that is thrust in the main character position, and the series suffers for it.
The worst part about all this is that the first series for Ace of Diamond (and I'm guessing the manga as well), ends up with Sawamura as a backseat character and a failure. That's a horrible way to end a manga series. The sequel series picks up where the last one ended, but I'm looking forward to the new recruits. Hopefully, they will be more on Sawamura's side than the last ingrates.

I also admit I enjoy how each character can have an important role of the day in each of these matches. It reemphasizes how important team concept is to baseball as a sport. Furuya is a beast. I have no idea how Sawamura can best him in the foreseeable future, but I'm looking forward to that nonetheless.

This episode actually felt like the start of a new season and series. It's atmosphere felt a lot better than the previous episodes for this season. There are some changes, and the new players seem interesting.
One of the problems with the team was that their offense was lacking when the seniors graduated. With the new rookies, it looks like they might resolve some of their offensive woes. Of particular interest is the new catchers. The short, new rookie, Yui Kaoru, seems to be cut from the same cloth as Miyuki, and he might potentially be as annoying as well. He seems to be Furuya's new catcher. He is apparently a big shot captain of the World Series team. However, of more interest is Okumura Koshu, the blonde catcher. He seems to be the more like a lead character, and he has antagonism towards Miyuki. I wonder if it is due to the competitive nature of playing in the same position, or that he doesn't like some of the things Miyuki does. Either way, I look forward to seeing Koshu doing things, and I'm guessing he will be Eijun's catcher. Masashi Yuki will most likely be the new clean-up hitter, or at the very least, he'll be in the heart of the batting order. The other interesting character is Seto Takuma, who wants to play second base and is from the same school as Koshu. He will probably make an excellent tandem with Haruichi. Asada Hirofumi, the glasses guy, will probably round out the pitching staff. He'll probably be a very reliable relief pitcher, if not the stopper. Furuya has always been most suited to be a stopper, anyway, not the ace, due to his lack of stamina and one trick pony with his fastball. Mogami Takeshi seems like the new antagonist who will be annoying as hell. He is probably the player version of Ochiai. Speaking of Ochiai, when I heard in the episode that Ochiai might be taking over the team for an extended stretch due to obligations for Kataoka, I cringed quite a bit. He is a good player development coach, but as far as being a real coach, he is awful and especially painful to watch in anime form. Here is hoping the new blood brings out a better anime for this 52 episodes Second Act.

It probably won't matter how well the new guys play. The author will probably just shoehorn all the likeable characters and start to emphasize and feature all the jackasses to continue to keep up with his tradition of making likeable characters suffer.

Even if the tide began to change I'm so thoroughly fed up with Terajima's bullshit by the end of the first act that it's a case of too little too late. The new characters seem interesting (far more promising than most of the Seido seniors) but unless Furuya leaves the stage entirely (which will never happen) there's no getting rid of the foul aftertaste of act I. Hearing that act II starts off with a Furuya arc sure isn't helping.
