I have to admit that I gave up on this anime after watching 15 episodes mostly because it was too melodramatic and I ugh... couldn't stand Marie Antoinette and Rosalie. So I stopped watching but I didn't delete the episodes.

Then I watched Chevalier D'Eon, that spurred me finish this anime. And you know what Rose of Versailles gets a lot better when the anime moved away from Maria Antoinette, Rosalie, Fersen and focuses on Oscar and Andre. Perhaps not so coincidentally the anime also moved towards the French revolution itself which I find more fascinating. So for me the last 15 episodes were excellent.

The only disappointment I had at the end was
Spoiler for Just in case:

Anyway I hope the animated movie gets released, if it's popular it might lead to a new anime and heck maybe even the sequel manga might get animated (Napoleon is much more fascinating then Marie Antoinette)

Talk about reviving a thread Blaat!
I have to admit when I watched this series a while back I did spend quite a bit of time thinking "Come on you French, start revolting!"

I think a slightly more pacey remake of this series with updated animation would be brilliant. The director is still working as he recently did Genji Monogatari Sennenki which also had the same character designer, so a remake could maintain a lot of the feel of the original.

There has been a Rose of Versailles movie in development for some time already. From http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...l-in-planning:

Quote:
Japan's Toei Animation has revealed during its January 28 midterm earnings announcement that the fifth Precure movie has been greenlit. The company also confirmed that the Rose of Versailles movie is still in pre-production development, and that it is planning its first computer graphics project.

Dying to see that new ROV movie, hoping it won't be in pre-production hell for years!

I'm watching this anime and it's awesome! This shojo is great!
The plot is really "complex" with a lot of machination, shojo moments, dramatic moments (the little boy..., the 11 year old girl... => OMG it was shocking!), there are a lot of characters and they are very interesting, the chara design is nice (Himeno+Shingo Araki =epic win), the soundtrack is great!
This anime is so tragic!

Well, Lady Oscar or Versailles No Bara is a masterpiece in my opinion!

F*cking awesome, I need another anime like that! I already watched Chevalier D'Eon, but it's a no match vs Lady Oscar (and it's not really the same style of anime....).

I liked it so much that I'm fansubbing it in my native language ...
I watched "Oniisama E..." as well. The atmosphere was different but
I liked it It was in some way similar to RoV.
I think these two anime series would stay for a long time in my Top 5.

Rose of Versailles and Oniisama E... share not only the same creator, the mangaka Ryoko Ikeda, but the same director on both series as well, the genius mind of Osamu Dezaki. If you enjoy these animations and its dramatic scenes, watch more of his other seventies anime series like Ashita No Joe, Ace Wo Nerae, Nobodys Boy Remi and Takarajima (I still haven't watched this one but I have huge expectations for it).

I know there's one tracker that actually batches both series together, but I'm probably going to get separately just because I think it'd mess up the seeding directories.

After seeing this fantastic shoujo. I've since lost all respect for around 95% of all the female characters in anime. Why can't we have strong willed, reasonable women all the while having emotions of their own like Lady Oscar?

Well a lot of it is about genre. I think there's a gal or two like that in Legend of the Galactic Heroes as well.

Wasn't CCS full of these too? I should go check up Princess Knight.

By the way, if anyone wants to preview the files in LE's batch without downloading the .torrent and running it in one of their tracker's, I mirrored it on Nyaa.eu since it seems to be the popular site nowadays:

Edit: But some of the information (up/down/completed) doesn't display on Nyaa, maybe I did something wrong?

Also I was just doing some reading and there is more than the 40 eps according to wikipedia. After the anime ended on Sep3/80, there was an anime OVA called "The Rose and Women of Versailles" that came out on Sep10. It is my hope that if anyone ever translates this that we could also see it on the tracker. It is apparently a recap, but I've seen those up before.

There was also a film called http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Oscar_(film) made in 79

Another called "Inochi arukagiri aishite" I don't know any info about beyond title and made in 87.

I've seen Ashita no Joe, it's indeed great. I've heart of Remi as well as Treasure Island (takara) but not of Ace Wo Nerae, so thanks for the rec will check it out.

Oh and it's neat to read about what actually happened during the revolution and some of the real people it's based on. The IRL Fersen was kinda hawt too:

I just finished ep 40... GOD. This is like the most depressing anime EVER.

What anime are similar to this? I thought LoGH was dark, or Higurashi, but those had light at the end of the tunnel. This anime just like... makes me hate humanity and democracy.

Anywho OMG there was actually a sequel to this manga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eikou_n...2%80%93_Eroica but the Napolean sequel (which has 3 characters from RoV return) hasn't had an anime adaptation yet. That sucks I wish someone like World Masterpiece Theatre would do this, they did Les Miserables after all.

Rosalie is real and she comes back

I cried when I heard news.

Let's just say this was one of my most wanted licenses, one that I had pretty much given up hope on.

Kind of surprised more people aren't talking about this on here! For me this news is huge.

Ahh..Nostalgia. It’s been so long since I finished watching the series when it was aired on my local TV a long time ago. You know, back then when the original Ultraman is finished and RoV replaced its time-slot, I was kinda not interested. But then, when I figured out that the MC that I thought was a guy turned out to be a girl, I was kinda fascinated with the idea and end following this series until it’s finished.

RoV was actually my first introduction to France’s history. Before watching it, I knew nothing about France, except Paris & the Eiffel Tower (granted, I was still in elementary school at the time). The funny thing is, when I actually study the real thing in school, I found Marie Antoinette character. Thus, I looked hard for any reference to Oscar on that history book only to find nothing. I was wondering why. Only later on I found out that Oscar is a fictional character .

Btw, will Right Stuf bother to “remaster” RoV, or is the copy they get from Japan is already the remastered version with improved and cleaner image? If it’s not, then I hope anybody will do a remaster for (if we’re lucky) the Blu-ray release.

From what I understand there is no BR for Rose of Versailles even in Japan. But if the trailer TRSI posted is anything to go by the Master's look pretty darn good (for a 1979 series that is).

Wow, so there's no Blu-ray of RoV even in Japan? I thought it was popular enough and was considered a classic. Here's hoping that they just don't release it yet and waiting for a proper time to remaster it for BD. Who knows? They might made a new version of the anime much like the upcoming Sailormoon .

No remake can top late Director Osamu Desakis direction ever. The man excelled the limited animation of the time and turned the game on his favour with his ever dramatic still scenes and the great character designs of Shingo Araki and Akio Sugino allied with a great script.

Most people that complain about the shoujo feel of the first part of the anime should know that the whole story plots, except those that involved only Oscar and Andre (which were the only fictional characters of the series), are based on real historic events that lead to the French Revolution.

People should also be aware that the French Revolution was a key factor to our modern democray. That very thing that let's us discuss things freely here.
