Just had this idea...

Mikuru can't time-travel beyond four years previous, right? And she can't figure it out. Now, Nagato has restricted herself so she can't time-travel to any future beyond the Disappearance incident. What if the two have similar concepts? Then, Nagato, not Haruhi, might be the key to figuring out the time-travel mystery.

Because to call him "onii-chan" would kinda kill the surprise. ^_^

Seriously though, Imouto never calls him "onii-chan". She always calls him "Kyon-kun" (denwa~), which he constantly complains about in the novels.

As for why the caller (whoever she is) is calling him senpai, that's one of the reasons why her being the enthusiastic freshman is so feasible.

Well, that's not something that even needs to be said, really. The nature of that freshman is incredibly obvious. Hell, she even appeared out of nowhere.

What we have here is the result of some information lost in translation. See, "time traveler" is not the literal translation of how people like Mikuru and Fujiwara are referred to in Japanese. The Japanese term, "mirai-jin" literally translates to "future-person" in the same way "Nihon-jin" translates to "Japanese person." It is about where someone is from.

There is no way to take that away from Fujiwara. It's like Kogetsu said, even if he loses the ability to travel in time, he will still be a person from the future. He will still not have a past in the present time before he first arrived in the past via time travel. He cannot be made normal like Nakagawa. It simply goes against the definition of what he is. A power can be taken away from someone; a person's nature cannot.

Fujiwara isn't 'special' because he's from the future; he's special because he can travel through time, period.

If he loses the ability to do so, even if he still originates in the future, he's little better than a 'normal' like Taniguchi et al.

Because someone who grew up in a ridiculously advanced civilization and knows how the future of the world will play out is so very close to normal.

None the less, Haruhi does not consider time travellers those she wanted to meet in the school intro. She wanted to meet people from the future. We only call them time travellers in English for convenience's sake.

Is there another term in Japanese for "time traveler"?

Do you believe that Taniguchi doesn't have special abilities? Because I believe he has.

I do as well. It seems to me that he knows more than what he lets on, at the very least.

You're missing the point. Very few people in Haruhi are normal in any usual sense of the word. Nakagawa is quite possibly still an esper, he just had his powers "deleted" by Yuki. Sasaki has three powered individuals trying to turn her into a god due supposedly to something inherent to her. Tsuruya-san is the Goddamn Batman. Kyon is Kyon. None of them have any powers. The name thing isn't based upon who you are, but on what you can do. Exercising your knowledge isn't a "Power" in and of itself, no matter how exotic that knowledge or how it was obtained.

And presumably if Fujiwara were to lose his powers it would be due to his future not playing out like he expects, thus invalidating a heavy portion of that knowledge.

Critically analyzing and evaluating all the girls and giving them ranks is somewhat of a super ability

Personally, I think Fujiwara will still count as a powered person even if his ability to travel through time is taken away from him. The ability to travel through time is frankly nothing spectacular. What makes time-traveling so wonderful is that one retains the knowledge and memories from the original time plane. Fujiwara knows how things will play out. He plans and schemes, and he can do whatever he like as long as it fits within his mind. I'm not too sure about how time paradoxes work, but essentially, because of the time fissure Haruhi created, Fujiwara is now making his own history now. That is power. Knowledge is power.

Not just that he did it, but that he apparently evaluated several hundred girls in just a few days' time, apparently only needing to spend a few minutes at most on each of them.

Not physically. Ryoko was one of the hottest girls of the new class, after all. And the nicest and most popular, superficially.

So I guess his ability is to rapidly rank girls based on their public appearance?

That's hardly a special power. I'm making my own history. We all are. Only thing Fujiwara has on that is his knowledge, and if his future is invalidated, he won't even have that.
