"Demons" that really aren't
A somewhat odd request, but I was wondering if there were any series where some group, antagonistic or otherwise, is known as "demons" by the populace, but this turns out to be completely false. They don't draw power from pain and fear, they aren't really monsters, and they weren't born to destroy, enslave or torment humanity. They may fight humanity and even be trying to annihilate them, but research demonstrates that this is a result of an escalated conflict between the races or groups. The more "normal" these "demons" are the better. Even better if they're leaded by someone known as a "demon king".

This manga is a great example of this. In this world, humans are raised and taught to believe that demons are evil, savage creatures who do nothing but commit atrocities on humans. In truth however, the "demons" see the humans as the aggressors, for continuously starting unprovoked wars between the two groups in the past. Rather than cruel and savage, many demons are kind and considerate, even to humans. Others are simply indifferent to humans. In this world, the term demon is used for pretty much any species that isn't human. The demons come in a variety, elves, winged humanoids, catgirls, nonhumanoid creatures, etc. The demon lands are governed by multiple demon kings who each posses an assigned territory. It starts off like a gag or parody manga, but as story progresses, the plot becomes deeper and more mature. Many of the typical fantasy cliches or tropes get flipped on its head in this manga. The mc is a human, but the majority of the main and supporting cast are the demons. |
