Anime from around this or last decade that are set in the 1990s or 1980s
I know that there's Higurashi (2006) which is set in 1983 and there's Kara no Kyoukai (2007) that takes place around the 1990s. Technically Meitantei Conan is still set in 1996, but somehow they managed to update the year without aging any of the characters. That's not what I'm interested in.
Anything else? [2006](1983) Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni [2006](199x) Black Lagoon [2007](199x) Kara no Kyoukai [2009](1987) Umineko no Naku Koro ni [2009](1986) White Album [2010](199x) Shiki [2012](1998) Another [2016](198X) Boku dake ga Inai Machi

Some aspects of Fruits Basket (2019) like the material on girl gangs ("sukeban") suggest it takes place when the manga was written, 1998-2006, or even earlier. Other times it appears the story takes place in contemporary Japan given the use of smartphones.
Showa Monogatari, released in 2011, is set in 1964 when the Olympics came to Japan.

White Album (2 seasons) - 2009 - set in the 1980ies (e.g. at one point someone receives an answering machine for present) [Note: White Album 2 is not the second season of White Album, and it definitely plays out later, but I don't know when.]

Yeah, but it couldn't have played that particular role in the plot, if everyone had a mobile phone or access to e-mail. It's definitely set in the 80ies (I googled it quickly, and the precise year appears to be 1986, but I'm not completely sure.) |
