I'll disagree with you on these grounds; for one, Relena could often seem 'stupid' but I believe she was more naive and dependent on Heero than anything.

Secondly, you must have not even watched GW or EW, as the storyline consistently urged Heero towards this 'greatness' he supposedly lacks.

I've watched both Wing and EW. I like Duo and Quatre

I don't really see anything great with Heero. I'm not big fan of Suicide Boy, and Wing has some sequences that really makes you question the intelligence of some of the characters. I can't see any "greatness" in Heero at all.

That's your opinion, I suppose. But more than anything, it seems you're just intent on disliking him. He was prepared to sacrifice Wing and himself, him being 'suicidal' was more of a testament to just how intent he was on accomplishing his mission, why like a character that has a hissy fit and almost destroys thousands of innocents because of one injustice? Oh, Heero was also the one that stopped him from doing that, as well in an inferior MS. I could go on, but then again, I can admit that I never dislike the hero.

I initially liked Heero in the sense that I thought he was cool and interesting and wanted to know more background/motivation on him (lo and behold he's the pilot we know the least about still). My problem with Heero was that he didn't change that much from beginning to the end of Gundam Wing, save for warming up to Relena. My problem with Heero stemmed from that conversation Relena had w/ the scientist/engineer that built Wing Gundam and trained Heero. He basically said something along the lines of Heero having a personality completely different with what she'd seen. I thought that conversation opened up a whole slew of potential for later stories, I wanted to see Heero's "programming" fall apart and his "real" personality come through. Instead they stuck to formula and Heero pretty much remained a robot for the rest of the series. I'd say Heero had potential at best but was ruined by bad writing afraid to make dynamic changes to the key character.

When he first encounters the Zero system, I think you find out a bit more about him. However, his personality's strength is most likely being able to hold his emotions under for the sake of the mission. If he let emotions influence him, GW could have turned out to be a totally different series, honestly. Just think, Relena, Une threatening to launch missiles at the colony, the difficulty encountering a long time ally Quatre in a superior MS with Trowa being (supposedly) dead at the time. Programmed? Maybe a little. Determined to succeed, determined to not let that little girl die again? Of course.

My favorite Gundam character, by far, is Natarle Badgiruel. She was such a great character, interesting to watch, and complex. Very underappreciated.
