Hahaha well the king probably has the authority to fire them and then the maid would be the one who'd need to challenge and he doesn't have to accept unless she offers enough incentives (ifyouknowwhatimeanwinkwink). Plus a lot of women are attracted to power and social status anyway. :P

This got me thinking about how a society like that would work realistically though. People in power probably need to be good gamers since there'll probably be situations where you just can't refuse a challenge.

Power, prospect of social advancement, the benefits from being a royal mistress, the benefits of having the Kings ear... etc... etc....

Even if a maid refuses, there's probably no shortage of volunteers if an appropriate price was offered, if the King wants a mistress.

Having a mistress also means an extra mouth that can leak diplomatic information to traitors and spies, unless he's skilled enough at games to shut her up.
