Yeah, the Animate article specifically pointed out that the movie will receive simultaneous distribution around the world (through Crunchy and other services, but Crunchy is the only Eng one).

I don't know why people keep harping on about same faces, it's not going to stop a show from selling (see Gundam SEED) and it's not going to be the reason a show sucks either (again see Gundam SEED). It's a minor thing at most and if the shows actually ends up being good and you refuse to watch it due to slightly more homogenized faces (because anime is such a great example of diverse faces in characters) than most anime, lol.

While I'm not fond of the sameface syndrome at the moment, if the show proves itself good enough, I can get used to or even start to enjoy the art style of the show.

Wow, are you seriously assuming that's what we're doing now? I just skimmed this entire thread and not a single person has claimed to refuse watching this anime for that reason. Some of us have reduced expectations or are joking at the samefaces, but we are still giving WUG a chance. ~ snip, snip ~

There are more problems with Wake Up, Girls! than just the problems with character designs. (But it's a rather obvious one; you wouldn't blame them.)
However, whether those other problems would rear its ugly head on the show itself or not is yet to be seen.

For me, I lost my faith in Yamakan when he became too full of himself. And that's from a person who don't really give a deym when it comes to production staff.

Animation is topnotch on the concert part. Yamakan is always good at these as usual. Whole show is like Idolmaster just without the cool BGMs or Monogatari series without the shaft backgrounds in my opinion. Words words words. The yakuza at the end is such a jerk.

I think it is better to watch the movie first? The TV series started really random and the movie was the first in the timeline I guess? Gotta go watch it on CR right away.

The first episode is kinda confusing especially on the transition of scenes and the girls seriously suffered the sameface syndrome. Other than that it was decent and it was especially interesting to see a show taking place on a Japanese city other than Tokyo which is a shining change of pace. I really can't put all of my focus on the girls simultaneously though, it would work better for one of them to get enough focus. The producer is a jerk but it works on a story like this very well. The concert scene was splendid to watch and there's enough love and care to be put, it's like Yamamoto really wanted the show to be a success. I wonder how the story goes, but so far it's basically Love Live! with a more serious atmosphere.

Just watched it.......dropping it now, i found nothing good about this at all, it was a complete chore to sit through and nothing i havent seen before.

If you do like it though dont worry i wont be coming back after each ep to say how bad it was, so u wont have to see me and my grumblings every week

So another Idol anime this season, well against all my judgement i watch it first ep + the 50min ova/movie? It was ok, the cheography for the song and the song itself was quite good.

The tone for the serie is more "serious/realistic" than e.g. Sonico.


ps: the pantyshot were to much forced and therefore funny in my opinion

Comparing a gundam show with an idol show is just irrelevant at best.
When you want to sell a character centred series, idols to boot, of course you need to have a colorful yet distinct cast to appeal as many people as possible, which isn't really the case (of course, even Imas got some sort of similarities between the girls because of the design, but absolutely not as "copy paste" as WGU").


Anyway, watched the "movie" and the first ep and it was quite... bland.
The "realistic" approach for an idol setup isn't bad at all, and having some shady stuff around is welcome, giving a broad perspective but... the narrative was pretty much awkward, with scenes transitions not really giving a good follow up.
The other major issue is that the characters are, not only very oversimplified in term of design (related to the same face syndrome), but you learn very very little about them, save the likes of Mayu or the maid cafe girl.
Adding the very subpar voice acting performance (especially Airi's, managing to turn normal dialogue extremely flat), and it just couldn't make me care about the girls at all.

Production values are pretty low (nothing to be expected with ordet anyway), and while they pretty much poured all their efforts in the mini live in term of animation, the consistency of the girls design was completely off most of the time.
Besides the live, well the general visuals and animation were below average.

I think the only saving grace to me was the song. Past that, it has no real strong appeal yet, and judging from the end of the episode 1, I'm not sure that any exciting stuff will come any time soon, but who knows.

I watched the movie and then episode 1. My lord... that was so boring and bland. This was the least interesting show this season, and I checked them all out. Nothing was interesting, NOTHING. Isn't that a statistical improbability?

Watched the first episode. Pretty much what everyone has been saying, the only thing that could be considered good/well done IMO was the live performance.

And for the producer who ran off...that she even bothered to get Twinkles (whom I assume are some established singer/writers) to compose a song for the girls seems really weird. I mean, you're gonna run with the money anyway, why go through all that effort?

Pretty much this is why realistic portrayals of idol activities don't look very well animated.
It's simply not that interesting at all.

I've only watched the movie so far and it wasn't good even if you set the bad production values aside. The girls lack what is most important in that kind of anime: individuality. It's already bad enough they all have the same face, they don't even have a personality! The only character that was somewhat developed was Mayu. I can't believe that was 50 minutes long. I feel like nothing happened.

What is Yamakan thinking? He keeps complaining about otaku anime and now he makes a generic idol anime with gratuitous panty shots, which is the epitome of what he hates. If not for the otaku caricature walking around (10 bucks he's supposed to represent the audience), I wouldn't have been able to tell it was made by him.
