So do you know the BETRAYAL that I felt when I discovered years later what Zyuranger was, and that the Power Rangers I was once a fan of was actually an American edit of the Super Sentai franchise, from which our beloved go-nin no senshi came from?!?!

But due to the chanting and mental focusing onto a destination, it is better for the Knights only use it outside of combat to teleport into combat. Once in, they just jet, thruster and fly.

Wow... I didn't expect another very long read.

As far as I can tell. The plot is heading for something big. I find no problems with regards to Verossa's, Schach's or Yuuno's characterizations... Except that maybe Acous could use some more PIMP in his talking...

As for the grammar. I ran it over and found no typo or other grammatical error. So no problem there.

Laura and Luna reminds me of Tsukasa and Kagami, except that their personalities are very different.

The pacing feels right, neither rushed nor too slow; allowing me to digest the details properly. And the plot itself is very interesting; and just like I said, promises something really big. Are you by any chance including more of the Canon characters here?

Overall. It's a *thumbsup* from me. Nice work.

Nanoha stood on the sidewalk, staring up at the pre-dawn sky. She wondered, briefly, if maybe everything would be okay. A brief flicker of hope shone in her purple-blue eyes as she stared upward, unconsciously gripping the cracked red gem held around her neck. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she looked up, focusing what little concentration she had to that one thing she loved to do: fly.

Slowly, her feet lifted off of the ground. First five feet, then six, then seven. Focusing purely on the concept, Nanoha felt everything around her disappear, leaving only the wind and herself. Gripping the gem tighter, Nanoha suppressed swelling feelings as she levitated.

Instead, thoughts invaded.

"Even if I do repair Raising Heart, it will never be the same. And in your state, Takamachi, it will never be more than a Storage Device."

"...Raising Heart..."

[Th... ..for......le da... For th.. . li..]

Nanoha's concentration wavered. Her altitude began to lower.

"Ahh! Get it off me!"
"We're surrounded!"
"Fall back, fall back!"
"We gotta get out of here!"

"I am a timeless chorus. Join your voice with mine, and sing victory everlasting."

Nanoha's concentration collapsed. Her feet touched ground first, followed by her knees, then her hands. Clutching a hand to her temple, Nanoha closed in on herself, blocking out the shrieks in her own mind, and to a lesser extent, her own. She felt it again, the horrible crawling underneath her skin, the terrible pain...

Abruptly, it was gone. Nanoha stood up, feeling dizzy. Shaking her head to clear away the mess in her mind, she began to walk to work.

"We can exist, together, you and I," It whispered to her. "Two corpses... in one grave..."

Nothing was the same anymore.

Episode 02: Sora wo Okutta mono (Heaven Sent)

Morning.
Alarm.
Shower.
Clothes.
Breakfast.
Flight.

In that order, is how Vivio's mornings usually went. Today was no exception. As Fate slept in after being home in so long, Vivio quietly prepared herself, dressing up in a casual shirt and shorts and setting out. The sun was just rising as she left, closing the door as quietly as possible. With no one to see her, Vivio took two steps and leaped into the air, heading in a beeline straight west, with the sun at her back as it crested the horizon. Her location was a quiet facility just outside the city.

The Facility was really a small military base dedicated to search and rescue: Officially known as Central Force Disaster Response/SAR Base A10 and Unofficially as "Disaster Relief", it was the home for the 4th SAR Battalion, a group of specialized mages able to deploy quickly for rescue operations. They only focused on the local area; as a small group, they didn't have a lot of coverage, and there were other facilities in other areas for the same thing. Their primary watch was the city proper.

Disaster Relief was a very relaxed place... or maybe it was to Vivio. She had been visiting the place on a regular basis for the past four years or so, every Saturday at about this time. It was because of someone here, someone that Vivio knew well now. As she flew over the facility, she saw that person, jogging down the side of the road that cut through the facility. It was like clockwork; the same spot, it seemed, every Saturday morning. Vivio couldn't help but smile, despite that. Dropping from the sky like a rock, Vivio barely adjusted her flight control to come to a complete stop about six inches in front of her target.

But Sergeant Subaru Nakajima, who had grown accustomed to the odd form of greeting, simply smiled. "Good morning, Vivio-chan." She said, coming to a quick stop. "You're just on time! I was about to finish my final lap!"

"Great," Vivio landed gently next to Subaru. "Can I come with you?"
"Of course," Subaru answered. "Let's go, come on!" Together, the two began to jog from that point to the end of the facility.

In eight years, Subaru had changed little. She was still as cheerful a genki girl as ever, though much of that was calmed by discipline and training. Much of her childish immaturity had been dropped in favor of growing up, but it was obvious that Subaru was still Subaru; if not by her (slightly matured) personality, than by her looks; Subaru hadn't grown at all in eight years, had kept her hair the same (complete with trademark bandana), and her Barrier Jacket was mostly the same.

Vivio deeply respected Subaru, and was one of the few friends from those days that she still kept in contact with. She hardly ever saw Teana, Erio, or Caro, but Subaru was a constant. She was one of Vivio's few friends, though years of developing self-doubt and mistrust still kept her at arm's length, and Subaru wasn't as close to Vivio as Syn was by a long shot. However, both would be loath to say they weren't friends. Though Subaru didn't visit much anymore, unable to cope with seeing her Sempai Nanoha in such a state, she still contacted Vivio through text messages and phone calls... well, when she had the time to.

As the two ended their run, Vivio took a breather as Subaru drank from a bottle of water. Vivio leaned up against a fence and began to pull the small gem off of her necklace. "Well," she said. "It's that time again, Subaru..."

"Yep. Ready as ever, huh?" Subaru asked. Vivio gave a nod in return.

It had been the custom that, on every Saturday, barring unnatural or extreme circumstances, Vivio would hook up with Subaru early in the morning and together, the two would do a little sparring exercise. It had never really been approved of officially by Nanoha or Subaru's superiors, but no one seemed to mind. The sparring had multiple purposes: To relieve Vivio's stress and train her, and to keep Subaru's own fighting skills sharp were just two of them. And today was already shaping up to be something of a roller coaster, so Vivio was ridding herself of any remaining stress from the night before as quickly as possible.

The two made their way to an open area off the side of the road, near the hangar bays for the helicopters kept on base. Subaru pulled out a familiar cut blue glem. "Mach Calibre, Revolver Knuckle," She said to it. The gem flashed once.

[All right. Activating Revolver Knuckle and Barrier Jacket. Power set to training mode.]

A flash of blue light enveloped Subaru before dissipating, revealing the Revolver Knuckle attached to her right arm along with her Barrier Jacket. Though mostly the same from her RF6 days, Subaru had replaced the secondary black chestpiece and blue shorts with a black bodysuit and blue trim, taking a pattern that in a way resembled the circuitry of a computer. The bodysuit provided better protection than her old Barrier Jacket, and now that she was a bit higher ranked, she could afford to keep it on during operations.

Normally, Mach Calibre would be equipped on her feet, but Subaru didn't want to run circles around Vivio. Likewise, Vivio wouldn't be flying this match.

"Yume," Vivio whispered to her Device as she took it off. "Set up, please."

[Yes, mistress. Activating Barrier Jacket and Sacred Staff. Setting power to training mode.]

Vivio's Device, Sacred Dream (Ten Yume in Japanese, lit. "Heaven's Dream"), was a Device based off of both Raising Heart and Bardiche; even the colors were the same, as the gem itself contained a red and yellow swirl along its spherical body.

Vivio nodded, taking off her necklace and holding it out. Vivio was enveloped briefly in white light as her mana converted itself to her Barrier Jacket. The Jacket looked familiar, as it was an exact copy of her Barrier Jacket from her brief time in the Cradle, but the colors were different; instead of black and blue, the jacket was primarily white, with a red trim where the blue was. As she clutched the Bo Staff form of her Device and slung it across her back, Vivio balled her gloved hands into fists and assumed a fighting stance.

"Ready?" She asked Subaru. Her answer was Revolver Knuckle loading a cartridge. "Yosh! Ike!"

Meanwhile, Nanoha sat in her office.

It was a small affair, really; about the size of your average office, it was here that Nanoha did her work now. Her job was meaningless, involving filing reports and sorting folders for her superiors. Occasionally she had to proofread a report and make sure that everything checked out before sending it off to the people it went to. She was essentially an in-between girl, a person with a job that wasn't really necessary but that the TSAB had simply given to her after... well, after.

As she slowly sorted out the paperwork, she wondered briefly if maybe the TSAB was purposefully keeping her under lockdown like this. Not once had they offered to give her some help in some way; after what she had experienced, she at least figured that maybe someone would offer psychological help. Instead, they had thrown her into an office, which made it hard to deal with things. Things like certain reports... and some people all but disappearing...

Nanoha shook her head again and pressed her hands to her temples. "But it's easier this way, right?" She asked herself. "As long as I'm here, life can pass me by and no one else will ever be hurt... and no one will die here... isn't that right, Raising Heart?" The Device didn't reply. That is to say, the Device couldn't reply. Reaching down and clutching the Device with a weak grip, Nanoha thought not for the first time about the red gem, and what she had done.

"[Danger! Activating EM Pulse! Master, brace for the shock!]"
"[My job... was to... protect... you. Did... I... do well... master?]"
"[...go...od....bye....my....mas....ster...]"

The gem was still cracked, even after all this time. A dark finality to that chapter of Nanoha's life. To save her, Raising Heart had sacrificed herself. Raising Heart had all but died to protect her master from harm. But she couldn't protect Nanoha from the pain in her heart, the one that tore at her, the one that destroyed her bit by bit, as it had every day for the past six years. Her Device, her daughter, her life, all of it was disappearing before her eyes. Destiny had decided to rip everything from her, so she was left with nothing, nothing but herself and her broken heart...

...and the voice.

"Do not be afraid," It whispered to her, even now; a horrible whisper that sounded like the gates of Hell itself were opening up. "I am peace; I am salvation."

"S-shut up," she said, clamping her eyes shut.
"If you join us, all your pain, all your suffering will disappear. Your voice will sing the chorus of millions."

"I saw what your kind did..." Nanoha whispered. "You won't tempt me... you won't do it again..."
"You are all but one of us," The whisper told her, sickly sweet yet disgustingly bitter. "All you have to do is surrender your will to mine, and you will acheive peace and englightenment. It is not yet your grave, but you are welcome... in it."

"Sod off," Nanoha muttered. "Jump off of a high place; leap into a star; just leave me alone..." I can't take this anymore.

A rumble quivered through Nanoha. "Submit!" It shouted at her. Defiant tears began to spill from Nanoha as she covered her head with her arms. "End your torment and my own! Or I shall feast upon your BONES!"

"No!" Nanoha cried, clenching her eyes shut to stop the tears.
"Insolent fool!" The shriek nearly put Nanoha into shock. "I have beaten fleets of Thousands! Consumed a galaxy of flesh, and mind, and bone! If you do not submit, then you will be food, nothing more! I offer you a choice!" Abruptly, the voice calmed. "But time has taught me patience, little one. There was much talk, and you have listened. Now you may speak, and I will listen. I await."

The voice, the presence, left, taking with it all of the hope that Nanoha had so desparately latched on to for so long. Broken, Nanoha cried into her desk, trying to push away the horrifying images and memories that surfaced, the thoughts that came unbidden, the feeling of pure terror, and collapsed under it. "No..." she cried. "Stop it... stop it... please... stop it..."

And in another place, at the same time, as a man in a yellow cloak watched these events unfurl... he smiled.

Vivio began to feel uneasy. As she and Subaru paused their sparring for a break, she couldn't help but feel like maybe something was dreadfully wrong. Like something was out of place. A cold wind blew suddenly, enhancing these feelings and making Vivio all the more uncomfortable. As she took a look back toward the tower where her mother work, she wondered briefly if she was okay. Stupid question, of course she isn't. Vivio thought to herself. Well, whatever, I gotta-

The phone rang. Vivio suddenly felt her blood run cold. Deactivating her Barrier Jacket, Vivio reached into her pocket and picked up the phone. "Uh... S-Syn?"

"Oh thank God," Syn said. "I was afraid you'd still be sparring with Nakajima-san. Listen to me," a pause as Syn took a deep breath. "I hacked my dad's computer and found the report you were looking for... but... I need to tell you... in person," another deep breath. "Vivio, meet me at the usual place... and I'll tell you what I found out."

"...is it that bad, Syn?" Vivio was suddenly scared, terrified. What was on that report that made Syn nervous and scared.

"Just!" Syn shouted, but calmed down. "Just... come see me, okay V?"
"A... Alright. I'll be right there. Bye." Vivio hung up the phone and stared at it briefly. "..."

"Do you need to go?" Subaru's question knocked her out of her thoughts. "It's alright if you do, Vivio." She nodded. "If it's as bad as the look on your face tells me, then you probably need to go."

"...Thanks, Subaru-san," Vivio said, pocketing the phone. "There's always next week, right?"
"Of course there is," Subaru nodded, deactivating her jacket and equipment. "I'll see ya then, k?"
"Okay. See ya, Subaru-san."
"See ya."

With that, Vivio took to the air, flying in a beeline to the "usual spot" - a small Saint Church-run park only open to church members. It was a place that, last year, Vivio and Syn had went to on a special holiday. Because of that day, Vivio had one of the few memories that she kept close to her heart. Really, one of the few that kept her from being driven completely batshit insane, but that was beside the point. As Vivio flew at top speed, using a spell she had learned from Keroko called Hyperdrive, a rapid movement spell that, while able to propel one fast and far, didn't allow for a change of direction. Aligning herself the best she could, Vivio activated the spell and shot forward like a bolt, pumping a great deal of energy into the spell.

Syn is never obviously nervous. She thought as she flew. Whatever this is... do I want to know? she shook her head clear. It can't be that bad... and Syn will be there. So whatever it is... she'll be there for me... right?

A few more minutes of rapid flight, plus a few twists and turns in the city proper, led her to the park that Vivio was looking for. She saw a flash of blue hair standing at the entrance and knew immediately that Syn was already waiting. Landing a few feet away, Vivio ran up to the park, ignoring the strain that she had just placed her Linker Core through and fighting off the sudden fatigue. Syn saw her coming, but instead of her normally cheerful wave, she simply stared at Vivio as she approached, biting her lip.

"I h-hurried," Vivio panted as she came to a stop in front of Syn. Bending over, Vivio put her hands on her knees and took a few deep breaths. "Damnit, that flight... took a lot out of me. Sorry... wasn't quicker."

"It's okay, V," Syn said quietly. Vivio stood up then, staring at her friend with a bit of anticipation and worry. Syn wasn't the quiet type, after all. "Are you ready to hear this?"

Vivio took a deep breath. "Ready as I'll ever be."


Syn nodded. "Let's go in," Together, the two walked into the park. As they did, Syn lifted a small gem, Kyouka, up, and let it bring up a certain file. "This report was really hard to come across, but I found it in the TSAB Database," she told Vivio as they walked. "Code OMICRON is really hard to break, so I tried an indirect methodology of hacking and got around the system with a minimal trail... well, I hope I did. Anyway, I found the report on you... and..." she paused, and took a breath. "I don't know how to tell you, Vivio."

"..." Vivio was silent, waiting. Unconsciously, she grabbed Syn's free hand. Syn squeezed tightly, putting as much moral support into that hand as she could.

"Tell me."

"Captain Takamachi Nanoha," Syn began as they walked, glancing around quickly to see if anyone was listening. At this time of morning, the park was empty. "This report is classified information, dated April 4th, MC0080, concerning the state of your adopted daughter's physical well-being. No one is allowed to see this report, not even your daughter, nor any higher-ranking friends or family. As such, this document is classified under Code OMICRON, For Your Eyes Only."

"Your daughter's physical on March 21st has given the medical department some concern," she continued. "Believed to be related to her status as a biological copy of the Sankt Kaiser. The problem lies within her body's cellular structure; she shows the same problems as subject FT-001, though at an accelerated rate. We believe this to be because of prisoner JS-823543; he did not create your daughter to be a permanent replacement, merely a temporary copy. He expected his plans to be carried out soon; as such, your daughter has a very limited lifespan," Syn and Vivio's hands intertwined. Syn took another breath.

"VT-001's cellular degeneration is rapid, occuring at least four times faster than the average human. Though this essentially means that she is rapidly aging, that is not the case; she will not mature faster than any normal person. Simply put, her cells are dying and replicating quickly, indicating that they are overworking and overmetabolising. This is obvious in your daughter's nearly exponential magical growth, as her Linker Core matures and her metabolism forces development. This, coupled with the experience VT-001 suffered through during the JS Incident, has taken a final toll on her body..."

Syn paused. "...Vivio..."
"What?" Vivio felt her heart clench.
Syn took another breath.

"Your daughter will not live for very much longer. We believe... that she will not see her seventeeth birthday."

Vivio's heart stopped. "Wh-what did you say?"
"..." Syn stopped walking, looking away from Vivio.
"S-Syn..." Vivio turned to look at Syn in the eyes. "Is... did you say..."

Silence. At the corner of Syn's blue eye, she could see it; a small shimmer, a reflection of light... a single tear, quickly trailed by another, a body quivering as she tried to hold back emotions that were going to spill forth. Vivio felt her own lips quiver as the words struck home; she would not live to see seventeen. Vivio felt her heart seize up and clench, felt her own emotions swell, and soon, Vivio felt her own tears come forth unwillingly. "I'm... not gonna... live..." She looked down, shallow breaths escaping, only looking up upon hearing Syn's own choked sob escape. "Syn..." she whispered. "I'm not ready to die..."

"I'm not ready for you to die either," Syn cried. Both girls embraced each other tightly, giving in to the unbearable pain that lashed at them. Vivio cried at full force, burying her head in Syn's quivering shoulder as hot tears came forth. Vivio's memories of her life began to surface; all the smiles, the anger, the love, pain, hate, and everything, came to her unwillingly, as if life itself was mocking her, showing her what she would lose in such a short time. "I don't want you do die so soon," Syn sobbed, her eyes shut and trying to stem the tide. "It's... no... just..."

"...m...maybe..." Vivio felt something in her throat swell. "Maybe... Nanoha-mama was right... maybe..." she was loath to say the words, but they felt so right. "Maybe it... it is pointless...[/i]" Her own feelings of self-doubt struck home; if Nanoha knew this, maybe it's the reason she had given up on Vivio... This is why... she thought. My existence is so pointless that even Jail thought it best for me to die after he was done with me... "I... shouldn't even be alive." Vivio shook in Syn's embrace and cried harder onto her shoulder.

"..." Syn was silent. She couldn't think of the words; what words were there? There was nothing to stop it, right? Nothing, no magic, no science, no hope-

Hope.

"No." Syn whispered, trying to get a stranglehold on her emotions. "I won't let it end like this." She pulled Vivio back slightly, looking into her friend's crying eyes. "Vivio... I'm not going to let you die like this. There's no point to it."

"What are you talking about?" Vivio asked, her vision still hazy. Slowly, Syn reached up to her friend's face and wiped away a wayward tear. "You saw it, read it to me."

"I did." Syn said. Blinking away her last tears, she looked at Vivio sternly. "This isn't how it's going to end. I don't care what, but I will find a way to reverse it." she put a hand on Vivio's shoulder. "Vivio, I've known you for too long for it to end like this. I refuse to see you upset, or crying, or worse yet, gone forever. This isn't how it's supposed to be, and I'll be damned if I let it happen that way."

Her confidence was infectious. "But... you're no doctor. The meds that sent the report don't even know." Vivio's eyes were shining, with tears and light as Syn looked deeply into her eyes.

"I have resources," Syn said, putting a finger to her eyepatch. "With this thing, I'll find something, anything, that will stop it. Me and you, working together, will not allow you to succumb to this thing; this last bit of legacy Jail Scaglietti left for us to deal with. I am not going to see you die that way! You are the closest person to my heart, Vivio, and even if I have to travel to the ends of the Galaxy itself, I will find a cure, even if it means breaking every damn TSA law there is." Abruptly, she smiled. "We're a team, you and I; a couple of middle-school Aces that have taken shit and given it back in spades; there is nothing we can't do together."

Lacing her hand with Vivio's, she looked deep into the other girl's eyes. "You have my word, Vivio. I'll find a cure."

"..." Vivio stared up at Syn, her lips quivering. "Syn..." she whispered faintly. "You... you mean it?" A nod was her reply. "Syn... you're willing... to throw away everything?"

"Of course!" Syn said. "I love you, you idiot!"
Vivio teared up again, throwing herself back on Syn and crying. Not tears of pain, but tears of happiness. This was someone who was willing to give up everything to keep someone close to her. A person who, at the drop of a hat, would help her, no matter what. Her best friend, her only friend... the one closest to her heart as well. She had hope... and Vivio was starting to get it too. Syn was all she had for a long time... and she was all Syn had.

"You're right," she cried into Syn's shoulder. "I'm going to fight it. As Vita once said, 'There's nothing we can't destroy!'" She giggled. "We'll take this out... right?"

"Right!" Syn let the girl sob in her arms, closing her tear-stained eyes slowly. "And we'll do it better than anyone before us."

"You can count on it."

Nanoha stood on the sidewalk, staring up at the pre-dawn sky. She wondered, briefly, if maybe everything would be okay. A brief flicker of hope shone in her purple-blue eyes as she stared upward, unconsciously gripping the cracked red gem held around her neck. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she looked up, focusing what little concentration she had to that one thing she loved to do: fly.

Slowly, her feet lifted off of the ground. First five feet, then six, then seven. Focusing purely on the concept, Nanoha felt everything around her disappear, leaving only the wind and herself. Gripping the gem tighter, Nanoha suppressed swelling feelings as she levitated.

Instead, thoughts invaded.

"Even if I do repair Raising Heart, it will never be the same. And in your state, Takamachi, it will never be more than a Storage Device."

"...Raising Heart..."

[Th... ..for......le da... For th.. . li..]

Nanoha's concentration wavered. Her altitude began to lower.

"Ahh! Get it off me!"
"We're surrounded!"
"Fall back, fall back!"
"We gotta get out of here!"

"I am a timeless chorus. Join your voice with mine, and sing victory everlasting."

Nanoha's concentration collapsed. Her feet touched ground first, followed by her knees, then her hands. Clutching a hand to her temple, Nanoha closed in on herself, blocking out the shrieks in her own mind, and to a lesser extent, her own. She felt it again, the horrible crawling underneath her skin, the terrible pain...

Abruptly, it was gone. Nanoha stood up, feeling dizzy. Shaking her head to clear away the mess in her mind, she began to walk to work.

"We can exist, together, you and I," It whispered to her. "Two corpses... in one grave..."

Nothing was the same anymore.

Episode 02: Sora wo Okutta mono (Heaven Sent)

Morning.
Alarm.
Shower.
Clothes.
Breakfast.
Flight.

In that order, is how Vivio's mornings usually went. Today was no exception. As Fate slept in after being home in so long, Vivio quietly prepared herself, dressing up in a casual shirt and shorts and setting out. The sun was just rising as she left, closing the door as quietly as possible. With no one to see her, Vivio took two steps and leaped into the air, heading in a beeline straight west, with the sun at her back as it crested the horizon. Her location was a quiet facility just outside the city.

The Facility was really a small military base dedicated to search and rescue: Officially known as Central Force Disaster Response/SAR Base A10 and Unofficially as "Disaster Relief", it was the home for the 4th SAR Battalion, a group of specialized mages able to deploy quickly for rescue operations. They only focused on the local area; as a small group, they didn't have a lot of coverage, and there were other facilities in other areas for the same thing. Their primary watch was the city proper.

Disaster Relief was a very relaxed place... or maybe it was to Vivio. She had been visiting the place on a regular basis for the past four years or so, every Saturday at about this time. It was because of someone here, someone that Vivio knew well now. As she flew over the facility, she saw that person, jogging down the side of the road that cut through the facility. It was like clockwork; the same spot, it seemed, every Saturday morning. Vivio couldn't help but smile, despite that. Dropping from the sky like a rock, Vivio barely adjusted her flight control to come to a complete stop about six inches in front of her target.

But Sergeant Subaru Nakajima, who had grown accustomed to the odd form of greeting, simply smiled. "Good morning, Vivio-chan." She said, coming to a quick stop. "You're just on time! I was about to finish my final lap!"

"Great," Vivio landed gently next to Subaru. "Can I come with you?"
"Of course," Subaru answered. "Let's go, come on!" Together, the two began to jog from that point to the end of the facility.

In eight years, Subaru had changed little. She was still as cheerful a genki girl as ever, though much of that was calmed by discipline and training. Much of her childish immaturity had been dropped in favor of growing up, but it was obvious that Subaru was still Subaru; if not by her (slightly matured) personality, than by her looks; Subaru hadn't grown at all in eight years, had kept her hair the same (complete with trademark bandana), and her Barrier Jacket was mostly the same.

Vivio deeply respected Subaru, and was one of the few friends from those days that she still kept in contact with. She hardly ever saw Teana, Erio, or Caro, but Subaru was a constant. She was one of Vivio's few friends, though years of developing self-doubt and mistrust still kept her at arm's length, and Subaru wasn't as close to Vivio as Syn was by a long shot. However, both would be loath to say they weren't friends. Though Subaru didn't visit much anymore, unable to cope with seeing her Sempai Nanoha in such a state, she still contacted Vivio through text messages and phone calls... well, when she had the time to.

As the two ended their run, Vivio took a breather as Subaru drank from a bottle of water. Vivio leaned up against a fence and began to pull the small gem off of her necklace. "Well," she said. "It's that time again, Subaru..."

"Yep. Ready as ever, huh?" Subaru asked. Vivio gave a nod in return.

It had been the custom that, on every Saturday, barring unnatural or extreme circumstances, Vivio would hook up with Subaru early in the morning and together, the two would do a little sparring exercise. It had never really been approved of officially by Nanoha or Subaru's superiors, but no one seemed to mind. The sparring had multiple purposes: To relieve Vivio's stress and train her, and to keep Subaru's own fighting skills sharp were just two of them. And today was already shaping up to be something of a roller coaster, so Vivio was ridding herself of any remaining stress from the night before as quickly as possible.

The two made their way to an open area off the side of the road, near the hangar bays for the helicopters kept on base. Subaru pulled out a familiar cut blue glem. "Mach Calibre, Revolver Knuckle," She said to it. The gem flashed once.

[All right. Activating Revolver Knuckle and Barrier Jacket. Power set to training mode.]

A flash of blue light enveloped Subaru before dissipating, revealing the Revolver Knuckle attached to her right arm along with her Barrier Jacket. Though mostly the same from her RF6 days, Subaru had replaced the secondary black chestpiece and blue shorts with a black bodysuit and blue trim, taking a pattern that in a way resembled the circuitry of a computer. The bodysuit provided better protection than her old Barrier Jacket, and now that she was a bit higher ranked, she could afford to keep it on during operations.

Normally, Mach Calibre would be equipped on her feet, but Subaru didn't want to run circles around Vivio. Likewise, Vivio wouldn't be flying this match.

"Yume," Vivio whispered to her Device as she took it off. "Set up, please."

[Yes, mistress. Activating Barrier Jacket and Sacred Staff. Setting power to training mode.]

Vivio's Device, Sacred Dream (Ten Yume in Japanese, lit. "Heaven's Dream"), was a Device based off of both Raising Heart and Bardiche; even the colors were the same, as the gem itself contained a red and yellow swirl along its spherical body.

Vivio nodded, taking off her necklace and holding it out. Vivio was enveloped briefly in white light as her mana converted itself to her Barrier Jacket. The Jacket looked familiar, as it was an exact copy of her Barrier Jacket from her brief time in the Cradle, but the colors were different; instead of black and blue, the jacket was primarily white, with a red trim where the blue was. As she clutched the Bo Staff form of her Device and slung it across her back, Vivio balled her gloved hands into fists and assumed a fighting stance.

"Ready?" She asked Subaru. Her answer was Revolver Knuckle loading a cartridge. "Yosh! Ike!"

Meanwhile, Nanoha sat in her office.

It was a small affair, really; about the size of your average office, it was here that Nanoha did her work now. Her job was meaningless, involving filing reports and sorting folders for her superiors. Occasionally she had to proofread a report and make sure that everything checked out before sending it off to the people it went to. She was essentially an in-between girl, a person with a job that wasn't really necessary but that the TSAB had simply given to her after... well, after.

As she slowly sorted out the paperwork, she wondered briefly if maybe the TSAB was purposefully keeping her under lockdown like this. Not once had they offered to give her some help in some way; after what she had experienced, she at least figured that maybe someone would offer psychological help. Instead, they had thrown her into an office, which made it hard to deal with things. Things like certain reports... and some people all but disappearing...

Nanoha shook her head again and pressed her hands to her temples. "But it's easier this way, right?" She asked herself. "As long as I'm here, life can pass me by and no one else will ever be hurt... and no one will die here... isn't that right, Raising Heart?" The Device didn't reply. That is to say, the Device couldn't reply. Reaching down and clutching the Device with a weak grip, Nanoha thought not for the first time about the red gem, and what she had done.

"[Danger! Activating EM Pulse! Master, brace for the shock!]"
"[My job... was to... protect... you. Did... I... do well... master?]"
"[...go...od....bye....my....mas....ster...]"

The gem was still cracked, even after all this time. A dark finality to that chapter of Nanoha's life. To save her, Raising Heart had sacrificed herself. Raising Heart had all but died to protect her master from harm. But she couldn't protect Nanoha from the pain in her heart, the one that tore at her, the one that destroyed her bit by bit, as it had every day for the past six years. Her Device, her daughter, her life, all of it was disappearing before her eyes. Destiny had decided to rip everything from her, so she was left with nothing, nothing but herself and her broken heart...

...and the voice.

"Do not be afraid," It whispered to her, even now; a horrible whisper that sounded like the gates of Hell itself were opening up. "I am peace; I am salvation."

"S-shut up," she said, clamping her eyes shut.
"If you join us, all your pain, all your suffering will disappear. Your voice will sing the chorus of millions."

"I saw what your kind did..." Nanoha whispered. "You won't tempt me... you won't do it again..."
"You are all but one of us," The whisper told her, sickly sweet yet disgustingly bitter. "All you have to do is surrender your will to mine, and you will acheive peace and englightenment. It is not yet your grave, but you are welcome... in it."

"Sod off," Nanoha muttered. "Jump off of a high place; leap into a star; just leave me alone..." I can't take this anymore.

A rumble quivered through Nanoha. "Submit!" It shouted at her. Defiant tears began to spill from Nanoha as she covered her head with her arms. "End your torment and my own! Or I shall feast upon your BONES!"

"No!" Nanoha cried, clenching her eyes shut to stop the tears.
"Insolent fool!" The shriek nearly put Nanoha into shock. "I have beaten fleets of Thousands! Consumed a galaxy of flesh, and mind, and bone! If you do not submit, then you will be food, nothing more! I offer you a choice!" Abruptly, the voice calmed. "But time has taught me patience, little one. There was much talk, and you have listened. Now you may speak, and I will listen. I await."

The voice, the presence, left, taking with it all of the hope that Nanoha had so desparately latched on to for so long. Broken, Nanoha cried into her desk, trying to push away the horrifying images and memories that surfaced, the thoughts that came unbidden, the feeling of pure terror, and collapsed under it. "No..." she cried. "Stop it... stop it... please... stop it..."

And in another place, at the same time, as a man in a yellow cloak watched these events unfurl... he smiled.

Vivio began to feel uneasy. As she and Subaru paused their sparring for a break, she couldn't help but feel like maybe something was dreadfully wrong. Like something was out of place. A cold wind blew suddenly, enhancing these feelings and making Vivio all the more uncomfortable. As she took a look back toward the tower where her mother work, she wondered briefly if she was okay. Stupid question, of course she isn't. Vivio thought to herself. Well, whatever, I gotta-

The phone rang. Vivio suddenly felt her blood run cold. Deactivating her Barrier Jacket, Vivio reached into her pocket and picked up the phone. "Uh... S-Syn?"

"Oh thank God," Syn said. "I was afraid you'd still be sparring with Nakajima-san. Listen to me," a pause as Syn took a deep breath. "I hacked my dad's computer and found the report you were looking for... but... I need to tell you... in person," another deep breath. "Vivio, meet me at the usual place... and I'll tell you what I found out."

"...is it that bad, Syn?" Vivio was suddenly scared, terrified. What was on that report that made Syn nervous and scared.

"Just!" Syn shouted, but calmed down. "Just... come see me, okay V?"
"A... Alright. I'll be right there. Bye." Vivio hung up the phone and stared at it briefly. "..."

"Do you need to go?" Subaru's question knocked her out of her thoughts. "It's alright if you do, Vivio." She nodded. "If it's as bad as the look on your face tells me, then you probably need to go."

"...Thanks, Subaru-san," Vivio said, pocketing the phone. "There's always next week, right?"
"Of course there is," Subaru nodded, deactivating her jacket and equipment. "I'll see ya then, k?"
"Okay. See ya, Subaru-san."
"See ya."

With that, Vivio took to the air, flying in a beeline to the "usual spot" - a small Saint Church-run park only open to church members. It was a place that, last year, Vivio and Syn had went to on a special holiday. Because of that day, Vivio had one of the few memories that she kept close to her heart. Really, one of the few that kept her from being driven completely batshit insane, but that was beside the point. As Vivio flew at top speed, using a spell she had learned from Keroko called Hyperdrive, a rapid movement spell that, while able to propel one fast and far, didn't allow for a change of direction. Aligning herself the best she could, Vivio activated the spell and shot forward like a bolt, pumping a great deal of energy into the spell.

Syn is never obviously nervous. She thought as she flew. Whatever this is... do I want to know? she shook her head clear. It can't be that bad... and Syn will be there. So whatever it is... she'll be there for me... right?

A few more minutes of rapid flight, plus a few twists and turns in the city proper, led her to the park that Vivio was looking for. She saw a flash of blue hair standing at the entrance and knew immediately that Syn was already waiting. Landing a few feet away, Vivio ran up to the park, ignoring the strain that she had just placed her Linker Core through and fighting off the sudden fatigue. Syn saw her coming, but instead of her normally cheerful wave, she simply stared at Vivio as she approached, biting her lip.

"I h-hurried," Vivio panted as she came to a stop in front of Syn. Bending over, Vivio put her hands on her knees and took a few deep breaths. "Damnit, that flight... took a lot out of me. Sorry... wasn't quicker."

"It's okay, V," Syn said quietly. Vivio stood up then, staring at her friend with a bit of anticipation and worry. Syn wasn't the quiet type, after all. "Are you ready to hear this?"

Vivio took a deep breath. "Ready as I'll ever be."


Syn nodded. "Let's go in," Together, the two walked into the park. As they did, Syn lifted a small gem, Kyouka, up, and let it bring up a certain file. "This report was really hard to come across, but I found it in the TSAB Database," she told Vivio as they walked. "Code OMICRON is really hard to break, so I tried an indirect methodology of hacking and got around the system with a minimal trail... well, I hope I did. Anyway, I found the report on you... and..." she paused, and took a breath. "I don't know how to tell you, Vivio."

"..." Vivio was silent, waiting. Unconsciously, she grabbed Syn's free hand. Syn squeezed tightly, putting as much moral support into that hand as she could.

"Tell me."

"Captain Takamachi Nanoha," Syn began as they walked, glancing around quickly to see if anyone was listening. At this time of morning, the park was empty. "This report is classified information, dated April 4th, MC0080, concerning the state of your adopted daughter's physical well-being. No one is allowed to see this report, not even your daughter, nor any higher-ranking friends or family. As such, this document is classified under Code OMICRON, For Your Eyes Only."

"Your daughter's physical on March 21st has given the medical department some concern," she continued. "Believed to be related to her status as a biological copy of the Sankt Kaiser. The problem lies within her body's cellular structure; she shows the same problems as subject FT-001, though at an accelerated rate. We believe this to be because of prisoner JS-823543; he did not create your daughter to be a permanent replacement, merely a temporary copy. He expected his plans to be carried out soon; as such, your daughter has a very limited lifespan," Syn and Vivio's hands intertwined. Syn took another breath.

"VT-001's cellular degeneration is rapid, occuring at least four times faster than the average human. Though this essentially means that she is rapidly aging, that is not the case; she will not mature faster than any normal person. Simply put, her cells are dying and replicating quickly, indicating that they are overworking and overmetabolising. This is obvious in your daughter's nearly exponential magical growth, as her Linker Core matures and her metabolism forces development. This, coupled with the experience VT-001 suffered through during the JS Incident, has taken a final toll on her body..."

Syn paused. "...Vivio..."
"What?" Vivio felt her heart clench.
Syn took another breath.

"Your daughter will not live for very much longer. We believe... that she will not see her seventeeth birthday."

Vivio's heart stopped. "Wh-what did you say?"
"..." Syn stopped walking, looking away from Vivio.
"S-Syn..." Vivio turned to look at Syn in the eyes. "Is... did you say..."

Silence. At the corner of Syn's blue eye, she could see it; a small shimmer, a reflection of light... a single tear, quickly trailed by another, a body quivering as she tried to hold back emotions that were going to spill forth. Vivio felt her own lips quiver as the words struck home; she would not live to see seventeen. Vivio felt her heart seize up and clench, felt her own emotions swell, and soon, Vivio felt her own tears come forth unwillingly. "I'm... not gonna... live..." She looked down, shallow breaths escaping, only looking up upon hearing Syn's own choked sob escape. "Syn..." she whispered. "I'm not ready to die..."

"I'm not ready for you to die either," Syn cried. Both girls embraced each other tightly, giving in to the unbearable pain that lashed at them. Vivio cried at full force, burying her head in Syn's quivering shoulder as hot tears came forth. Vivio's memories of her life began to surface; all the smiles, the anger, the love, pain, hate, and everything, came to her unwillingly, as if life itself was mocking her, showing her what she would lose in such a short time. "I don't want you do die so soon," Syn sobbed, her eyes shut and trying to stem the tide. "It's... no... just..."

"...m...maybe..." Vivio felt something in her throat swell. "Maybe... Nanoha-mama was right... maybe..." she was loath to say the words, but they felt so right. "Maybe it... it is pointless...[/i]" Her own feelings of self-doubt struck home; if Nanoha knew this, maybe it's the reason she had given up on Vivio... This is why... she thought. My existence is so pointless that even Jail thought it best for me to die after he was done with me... "I... shouldn't even be alive." Vivio shook in Syn's embrace and cried harder onto her shoulder.

"..." Syn was silent. She couldn't think of the words; what words were there? There was nothing to stop it, right? Nothing, no magic, no science, no hope-

Hope.

"No." Syn whispered, trying to get a stranglehold on her emotions. "I won't let it end like this." She pulled Vivio back slightly, looking into her friend's crying eyes. "Vivio... I'm not going to let you die like this. There's no point to it."

"What are you talking about?" Vivio asked, her vision still hazy. Slowly, Syn reached up to her friend's face and wiped away a wayward tear. "You saw it, read it to me."

"I did." Syn said. Blinking away her last tears, she looked at Vivio sternly. "This isn't how it's going to end. I don't care what, but I will find a way to reverse it." she put a hand on Vivio's shoulder. "Vivio, I've known you for too long for it to end like this. I refuse to see you upset, or crying, or worse yet, gone forever. This isn't how it's supposed to be, and I'll be damned if I let it happen that way."

Her confidence was infectious. "But... you're no doctor. The meds that sent the report don't even know." Vivio's eyes were shining, with tears and light as Syn looked deeply into her eyes.

"I have resources," Syn said, putting a finger to her eyepatch. "With this thing, I'll find something, anything, that will stop it. Me and you, working together, will not allow you to succumb to this thing; this last bit of legacy Jail Scaglietti left for us to deal with. I am not going to see you die that way! You are the closest person to my heart, Vivio, and even if I have to travel to the ends of the Galaxy itself, I will find a cure, even if it means breaking every damn TSA law there is." Abruptly, she smiled. "We're a team, you and I; a couple of middle-school Aces that have taken shit and given it back in spades; there is nothing we can't do together."

Lacing her hand with Vivio's, she looked deep into the other girl's eyes. "You have my word, Vivio. I'll find a cure."

"..." Vivio stared up at Syn, her lips quivering. "Syn..." she whispered faintly. "You... you mean it?" A nod was her reply. "Syn... you're willing... to throw away everything?"

"Of course!" Syn said. "I love you, you idiot!"
Vivio teared up again, throwing herself back on Syn and crying. Not tears of pain, but tears of happiness. This was someone who was willing to give up everything to keep someone close to her. A person who, at the drop of a hat, would help her, no matter what. Her best friend, her only friend... the one closest to her heart as well. She had hope... and Vivio was starting to get it too. Syn was all she had for a long time... and she was all Syn had.

"You're right," she cried into Syn's shoulder. "I'm going to fight it. As Vita once said, 'There's nothing we can't destroy!'" She giggled. "We'll take this out... right?"

"Right!" Syn let the girl sob in her arms, closing her tear-stained eyes slowly. "And we'll do it better than anyone before us."

"You can count on it."

Syn's characterization good? Nanoha? Vivio? Subaru? I've never written Subaru before, so... yeah.

And the park scene was hard for me. I forgot how hard it is to write stuff like that. Personally I feel I went too fast.

Slowly, her feet lifted off of the ground. First five feet, then six, then seven. Focusing purely on the concept, Nanoha felt everything around her disappear, leaving only the wind and herself. Gripping the gem tighter, Nanoha suppressed swelling feelings as she levitated.

Instead, thoughts invaded.

"Even if I do repair Raising Heart, it will never be the same. And in your state, Takamachi, it will never be more than a Storage Device."

"...Raising Heart..."

[Th... ..for......le da... For th.. . li..]

Nanoha's concentration wavered. Her altitude began to lower.

"Ahh! Get it off me!"
"We're surrounded!"
"Fall back, fall back!"
"We gotta get out of here!"

Nanoha's concentration collapsed. Her feet touched ground first, followed by her knees, then her hands. Clutching a hand to her temple, Nanoha closed in on herself, blocking out the shrieks in her own mind, and to a lesser extent, her own. She felt it again, the horrible crawling underneath her skin, the terrible pain...

Abruptly, it was gone. Nanoha stood up, feeling dizzy. Shaking her head to clear away the mess in her mind, she began to walk to work.

"We can exist, together, you and I," It whispered to her. "Two corpses... in one grave..."

Nothing was the same anymore.

Episode 02: Sora wo Okutta mono (Heaven Sent)

Morning.
Alarm.
Shower.
Clothes.
Breakfast.
Flight.

In that order, is how Vivio's mornings usually went. Today was no exception. As Fate slept in after being home in so long, Vivio quietly prepared herself, dressing up in a casual shirt and shorts and setting out. The sun was just rising as she left, closing the door as quietly as possible. With no one to see her, Vivio took two steps and leaped into the air, heading in a beeline straight west, with the sun at her back as it crested the horizon. Her location was a quiet facility just outside the city.

The Facility was really a small military base dedicated to search and rescue: Officially known as Central Force Disaster Response/SAR Base A10 and Unofficially as "Disaster Relief", it was the home for the 4th SAR Battalion, a group of specialized mages able to deploy quickly for rescue operations. They only focused on the local area; as a small group, they didn't have a lot of coverage, and there were other facilities in other areas for the same thing. Their primary watch was the city proper.

Disaster Relief was a very relaxed place... or maybe it was to Vivio. She had been visiting the place on a regular basis for the past four years or so, every Saturday at about this time. It was because of someone here, someone that Vivio knew well now. As she flew over the facility, she saw that person, jogging down the side of the road that cut through the facility. It was like clockwork; the same spot, it seemed, every Saturday morning. Vivio couldn't help but smile, despite that. Dropping from the sky like a rock, Vivio barely adjusted her flight control to come to a complete stop about six inches in front of her target.

But Sergeant Subaru Nakajima, who had grown accustomed to the odd form of greeting, simply smiled. "Good morning, Vivio-chan." She said, coming to a quick stop. "You're just on time! I was about to finish my final lap!"

"Great," Vivio landed gently next to Subaru. "Can I come with you?"
"Of course," Subaru answered. "Let's go, come on!" Together, the two began to jog from that point to the end of the facility.

In eight years, Subaru had changed little. She was still as cheerful a genki girl as ever, though much of that was calmed by discipline and training. Much of her childish immaturity had been dropped in favor of growing up, but it was obvious that Subaru was still Subaru; if not by her (slightly matured) personality, than by her looks; Subaru hadn't grown at all in eight years, had kept her hair the same (complete with trademark bandana), and her Barrier Jacket was mostly the same.

Vivio deeply respected Subaru, and was one of the few friends from those days that she still kept in contact with. She hardly ever saw Teana, Erio, or Caro, but Subaru was a constant. She was one of Vivio's few friends, though years of developing self-doubt and mistrust still kept her at arm's length, and Subaru wasn't as close to Vivio as Syn was by a long shot. However, both would be loath to say they weren't friends. Though Subaru didn't visit much anymore, unable to cope with seeing her Sempai Nanoha in such a state, she still contacted Vivio through text messages and phone calls... well, when she had the time to.

As the two ended their run, Vivio took a breather as Subaru drank from a bottle of water. Vivio leaned up against a fence and began to pull the small gem off of her necklace. "Well," she said. "It's that time again, Subaru..."

"Yep. Ready as ever, huh?" Subaru asked. Vivio gave a nod in return.

It had been the custom that, on every Saturday, barring unnatural or extreme circumstances, Vivio would hook up with Subaru early in the morning and together, the two would do a little sparring exercise. It had never really been approved of officially by Nanoha or Subaru's superiors, but no one seemed to mind. The sparring had multiple purposes: To relieve Vivio's stress and train her, and to keep Subaru's own fighting skills sharp were just two of them. And today was already shaping up to be something of a roller coaster, so Vivio was ridding herself of any remaining stress from the night before as quickly as possible.

The two made their way to an open area off the side of the road, near the hangar bays for the helicopters kept on base. Subaru pulled out a familiar cut blue glem. "Mach Calibre, Revolver Knuckle," She said to it. The gem flashed once.

[All right. Activating Revolver Knuckle and Barrier Jacket. Power set to training mode.]

A flash of blue light enveloped Subaru before dissipating, revealing the Revolver Knuckle attached to her right arm along with her Barrier Jacket. Though mostly the same from her RF6 days, Subaru had replaced the secondary black chestpiece and blue shorts with a black bodysuit and blue trim, taking a pattern that in a way resembled the circuitry of a computer. The bodysuit provided better protection than her old Barrier Jacket, and now that she was a bit higher ranked, she could afford to keep it on during operations.

Normally, Mach Calibre would be equipped on her feet, but Subaru didn't want to run circles around Vivio. Likewise, Vivio wouldn't be flying this match.

"Yume," Vivio whispered to her Device as she took it off. "Set up, please."

[Yes, mistress. Activating Barrier Jacket and Sacred Staff. Setting power to training mode.]

Vivio's Device, Sacred Dream (Ten Yume in Japanese, lit. "Heaven's Dream"), was a Device based off of both Raising Heart and Bardiche; even the colors were the same, as the gem itself contained a red and yellow swirl along its spherical body.

Vivio nodded, taking off her necklace and holding it out. Vivio was enveloped briefly in white light as her mana converted itself to her Barrier Jacket. The Jacket looked familiar, as it was an exact copy of her Barrier Jacket from her brief time in the Cradle, but the colors were different; instead of black and blue, the jacket was primarily white, with a red trim where the blue was. As she clutched the Bo Staff form of her Device and slung it across her back, Vivio balled her gloved hands into fists and assumed a fighting stance.

"Ready?" She asked Subaru. Her answer was Revolver Knuckle loading a cartridge. "Yosh! Ike!"

Meanwhile, Nanoha sat in her office.

It was a small affair, really; about the size of your average office, it was here that Nanoha did her work now. Her job was meaningless, involving filing reports and sorting folders for her superiors. Occasionally she had to proofread a report and make sure that everything checked out before sending it off to the people it went to. She was essentially an in-between girl, a person with a job that wasn't really necessary but that the TSAB had simply given to her after... well, after.

As she slowly sorted out the paperwork, she wondered briefly if maybe the TSAB was purposefully keeping her under lockdown like this. Not once had they offered to give her some help in some way; after what she had experienced, she at least figured that maybe someone would offer psychological help. Instead, they had thrown her into an office, which made it hard to deal with things. Things like certain reports... and some people all but disappearing...

Nanoha shook her head again and pressed her hands to her temples. "But it's easier this way, right?" She asked herself. "As long as I'm here, life can pass me by and no one else will ever be hurt... and no one will die here... isn't that right, Raising Heart?" The Device didn't reply. That is to say, the Device couldn't reply. Reaching down and clutching the Device with a weak grip, Nanoha thought not for the first time about the red gem, and what she had done.

"[Danger! Activating EM Pulse! Master, brace for the shock!]"
"[My job... was to... protect... you. Did... I... do well... master?]"
"[...go...od....bye....my....mas....ster...]"

The gem was still cracked, even after all this time. A dark finality to that chapter of Nanoha's life. To save her, Raising Heart had sacrificed herself. Raising Heart had all but died to protect her master from harm. But she couldn't protect Nanoha from the pain in her heart, the one that tore at her, the one that destroyed her bit by bit, as it had every day for the past six years. Her Device, her daughter, her life, all of it was disappearing before her eyes. Destiny had decided to rip everything from her, so she was left with nothing, nothing but herself and her broken heart...

...and the voice.

"Do not be afraid," It whispered to her, even now; a horrible whisper that sounded like the gates of Hell itself were opening up. "I am peace; I am salvation."

"S-shut up," she said, clamping her eyes shut.
"If you join us, all your pain, all your suffering will disappear. Your voice will sing the chorus of millions."

"I saw what your kind did..." Nanoha whispered. "You won't tempt me... you won't do it again..."
"You are all but one of us," The whisper told her, sickly sweet yet disgustingly bitter. "All you have to do is surrender your will to mine, and you will acheive peace and englightenment. It is not yet your grave, but you are welcome... in it."

"Sod off," Nanoha muttered. "Jump off of a high place; leap into a star; just leave me alone..." I can't take this anymore.

A rumble quivered through Nanoha. "Submit!" It shouted at her. Defiant tears began to spill from Nanoha as she covered her head with her arms. "End your torment and my own! Or I shall feast upon your BONES!"

"No!" Nanoha cried, clenching her eyes shut to stop the tears.
"Insolent fool!" The shriek nearly put Nanoha into shock. "I have beaten fleets of Thousands! Consumed a galaxy of flesh, and mind, and bone! If you do not submit, then you will be food, nothing more! I offer you a choice!" Abruptly, the voice calmed. "But time has taught me patience, little one. There was much talk, and you have listened. Now you may speak, and I will listen. I await."

"...is it that bad, Syn?" Vivio was suddenly scared, terrified. What was on that report that made Syn nervous and scared.

"Just!" Syn shouted, but calmed down. "Just... come see me, okay V?"
"A... Alright. I'll be right there. Bye." Vivio hung up the phone and stared at it briefly. "..."

"Do you need to go?" Subaru's question knocked her out of her thoughts. "It's alright if you do, Vivio." She nodded. "If it's as bad as the look on your face tells me, then you probably need to go."

"...Thanks, Subaru-san," Vivio said, pocketing the phone. "There's always next week, right?"
"Of course there is," Subaru nodded, deactivating her jacket and equipment. "I'll see ya then, k?"
"Okay. See ya, Subaru-san."
"See ya."

With that, Vivio took to the air, flying in a beeline to the "usual spot" - a small Saint Church-run park only open to church members. It was a place that, last year, Vivio and Syn had went to on a special holiday. Because of that day, Vivio had one of the few memories that she kept close to her heart. Really, one of the few that kept her from being driven completely batshit insane, but that was beside the point. As Vivio flew at top speed, using a spell she had learned from Keroko called Hyperdrive, a rapid movement spell that, while able to propel one fast and far, didn't allow for a change of direction. Aligning herself the best she could, Vivio activated the spell and shot forward like a bolt, pumping a great deal of energy into the spell.

Syn is never obviously nervous. She thought as she flew. Whatever this is... do I want to know? she shook her head clear. It can't be that bad... and Syn will be there. So whatever it is... she'll be there for me... right?

A few more minutes of rapid flight, plus a few twists and turns in the city proper, led her to the park that Vivio was looking for. She saw a flash of blue hair standing at the entrance and knew immediately that Syn was already waiting. Landing a few feet away, Vivio ran up to the park, ignoring the strain that she had just placed her Linker Core through and fighting off the sudden fatigue. Syn saw her coming, but instead of her normally cheerful wave, she simply stared at Vivio as she approached, biting her lip.

"I h-hurried," Vivio panted as she came to a stop in front of Syn. Bending over, Vivio put her hands on her knees and took a few deep breaths. "Damnit, that flight... took a lot out of me. Sorry... wasn't quicker."

"It's okay, V," Syn said quietly. Vivio stood up then, staring at her friend with a bit of anticipation and worry. Syn wasn't the quiet type, after all. "Are you ready to hear this?"

Vivio took a deep breath. "Ready as I'll ever be."


Syn nodded. "Let's go in," Together, the two walked into the park. As they did, Syn lifted a small gem, Kyouka, up, and let it bring up a certain file. "This report was really hard to come across, but I found it in the TSAB Database," she told Vivio as they walked. "Code OMICRON is really hard to break, so I tried an indirect methodology of hacking and got around the system with a minimal trail... well, I hope I did. Anyway, I found the report on you... and..." she paused, and took a breath. "I don't know how to tell you, Vivio."

"..." Vivio was silent, waiting. Unconsciously, she grabbed Syn's free hand. Syn squeezed tightly, putting as much moral support into that hand as she could.

"Tell me."

"Captain Takamachi Nanoha," Syn began as they walked, glancing around quickly to see if anyone was listening. At this time of morning, the park was empty. "This report is classified information, dated April 4th, MC0080, concerning the state of your adopted daughter's physical well-being. No one is allowed to see this report, not even your daughter, nor any higher-ranking friends or family. As such, this document is classified under Code OMICRON, For Your Eyes Only."

"Your daughter's physical on March 21st has given the medical department some concern," she continued. "Believed to be related to her status as a biological copy of the Sankt Kaiser. The problem lies within her body's cellular structure; she shows the same problems as subject FT-001, though at an accelerated rate. We believe this to be because of prisoner JS-823543; he did not create your daughter to be a permanent replacement, merely a temporary copy. He expected his plans to be carried out soon; as such, your daughter has a very limited lifespan," Syn and Vivio's hands intertwined. Syn took another breath.

"VT-001's cellular degeneration is rapid, occuring at least four times faster than the average human. Though this essentially means that she is rapidly aging, that is not the case; she will not mature faster than any normal person. Simply put, her cells are dying and replicating quickly, indicating that they are overworking and overmetabolising. This is obvious in your daughter's nearly exponential magical growth, as her Linker Core matures and her metabolism forces development. This, coupled with the experience VT-001 suffered through during the JS Incident, has taken a final toll on her body..."

Syn paused. "...Vivio..."
"What?" Vivio felt her heart clench.
Syn took another breath.

"Your daughter will not live for very much longer. We believe... that she will not see her seventeeth birthday."

Vivio's heart stopped. "Wh-what did you say?"
"..." Syn stopped walking, looking away from Vivio.
"S-Syn..." Vivio turned to look at Syn in the eyes. "Is... did you say..."

Silence. At the corner of Syn's blue eye, she could see it; a small shimmer, a reflection of light... a single tear, quickly trailed by another, a body quivering as she tried to hold back emotions that were going to spill forth. Vivio felt her own lips quiver as the words struck home; she would not live to see seventeen. Vivio felt her heart seize up and clench, felt her own emotions swell, and soon, Vivio felt her own tears come forth unwillingly. "I'm... not gonna... live..." She looked down, shallow breaths escaping, only looking up upon hearing Syn's own choked sob escape. "Syn..." she whispered. "I'm not ready to die..."

"I'm not ready for you to die either," Syn cried. Both girls embraced each other tightly, giving in to the unbearable pain that lashed at them. Vivio cried at full force, burying her head in Syn's quivering shoulder as hot tears came forth. Vivio's memories of her life began to surface; all the smiles, the anger, the love, pain, hate, and everything, came to her unwillingly, as if life itself was mocking her, showing her what she would lose in such a short time. "I don't want you do die so soon," Syn sobbed, her eyes shut and trying to stem the tide. "It's... no... just..."

"...m...maybe..." Vivio felt something in her throat swell. "Maybe... Nanoha-mama was right... maybe..." she was loath to say the words, but they felt so right. "Maybe it... it is pointless...[/i]" Her own feelings of self-doubt struck home; if Nanoha knew this, maybe it's the reason she had given up on Vivio... This is why... she thought. My existence is so pointless that even Jail thought it best for me to die after he was done with me... "I... shouldn't even be alive." Vivio shook in Syn's embrace and cried harder onto her shoulder.

"..." Syn was silent. She couldn't think of the words; what words were there? There was nothing to stop it, right? Nothing, no magic, no science, no hope-

Hope.

"No." Syn whispered, trying to get a stranglehold on her emotions. "I won't let it end like this." She pulled Vivio back slightly, looking into her friend's crying eyes. "Vivio... I'm not going to let you die like this. There's no point to it."

"What are you talking about?" Vivio asked, her vision still hazy. Slowly, Syn reached up to her friend's face and wiped away a wayward tear. "You saw it, read it to me."

"I did." Syn said. Blinking away her last tears, she looked at Vivio sternly. "This isn't how it's going to end. I don't care what, but I will find a way to reverse it." she put a hand on Vivio's shoulder. "Vivio, I've known you for too long for it to end like this. I refuse to see you upset, or crying, or worse yet, gone forever. This isn't how it's supposed to be, and I'll be damned if I let it happen that way."

Her confidence was infectious. "But... you're no doctor. The meds that sent the report don't even know." Vivio's eyes were shining, with tears and light as Syn looked deeply into her eyes.

"I have resources," Syn said, putting a finger to her eyepatch. "With this thing, I'll find something, anything, that will stop it. Me and you, working together, will not allow you to succumb to this thing; this last bit of legacy Jail Scaglietti left for us to deal with. I am not going to see you die that way! You are the closest person to my heart, Vivio, and even if I have to travel to the ends of the Galaxy itself, I will find a cure, even if it means breaking every damn TSA law there is." Abruptly, she smiled. "We're a team, you and I; a couple of middle-school Aces that have taken shit and given it back in spades; there is nothing we can't do together."

Lacing her hand with Vivio's, she looked deep into the other girl's eyes. "You have my word, Vivio. I'll find a cure."

"..." Vivio stared up at Syn, her lips quivering. "Syn..." she whispered faintly. "You... you mean it?" A nod was her reply. "Syn... you're willing... to throw away everything?"

"Of course!" Syn said. "I love you, you idiot!"
Vivio teared up again, throwing herself back on Syn and crying. Not tears of pain, but tears of happiness. This was someone who was willing to give up everything to keep someone close to her. A person who, at the drop of a hat, would help her, no matter what. Her best friend, her only friend... the one closest to her heart as well. She had hope... and Vivio was starting to get it too. Syn was all she had for a long time... and she was all Syn had.

"You're right," she cried into Syn's shoulder. "I'm going to fight it. As Vita once said, 'There's nothing we can't destroy!'" She giggled. "We'll take this out... right?"

"Right!" Syn let the girl sob in her arms, closing her tear-stained eyes slowly. "And we'll do it better than anyone before us."

"You can count on it."

And the park scene was hard for me. I forgot how hard it is to write stuff like that. Personally I feel I went too fast.

After reading PF's, then Dkellis, then Xgouki and now your's, I feel so stressed for Rebuilt that no amount of crack seems to help get rid of the feeling.

Another episode capable of rending the heart! And the "Voice" does spook me quite a bit; reminded me of ol Arthas/Ner-Zhul for some reason.

We got more details to the past, but at the same time more questions are raised! It's all been very planned out and I give my .

The impetus behind Foy was actually to make a character atypical of a hotblooded Macross pilot, and so I went with challenging myself to make a real schzophrenic gender-confused sentokijin.

Justicar Foy Rokker

If you didn’t know him well enough, Foy is a cold and calculated person that brutally cuts through the chase with both words and actions, sizing up new contacts in one glance and makes his judgment known there and then. This cold attitude to other humans was a result from repeatedly being judged unreliable by ignorant people just because he was of different birth.

In battle, Foy possesses remarkable resolve and swiftness, his WM Bazooka blasting away that despite its size always lands with the precision of a surgeon. And he does all that without a hint of flicker in his eyes; it was a trait that he learned from the White Devil very well.

And he always counts his cards, factoring in every detail quickly before taking action and ensuring the best result for the Light and himself. Foy’s plans even include possible changes and extras running up to Z if need be. It was something that he’d brag about being superior to pure flesh and blood, and the Cleric-Knights know that they can count on Foy for the most efficient battle plan.

His friends and comrades are never far from his sensor range, and to stray off without letting him know often earns them a fierce rebuke. As such, Hiro and Foy are often at loggerheads over the former’s lone wolf habits making a mess out of VEDA’s plans.

In quieter times, Foy is often seen hanging out with his compatriots, and even when he’s absent, they all know that he’s just busy with VEDA, like now, as he is VEDA’s primary, in fact only, computer to human interface.

Due to his feminine appearance and matching hair, there have been many occasions where he’d be mistaken for a girl. Embarrassing for him, but a brutalized fate then awaits the mistaker. The other Justicars never let him off the hook in such situations, and sometimes even make a big fuss out of it.

History

Foy’s first memory was created on the administrated Rim World #93, current name Far Anti-Spinward Frontier. Before then, Foy had no memory of who bore him or where he’d come from, not even why was he made in the first place. The one thing he knew was that he’s always been on the run as the scientists looking after him moved from lab to lab to escape detention. Foy didn’t have any sob stories that one would expect out of a lab rat, as the scientists didn’t even conduct any tests on him, apart from ensuring that he had enough nourishment to keep growing. Even so, there was nothing during that time for him to cheer about.

The TSAB caught up with the scientists and after the raid, they impounded and placed Foy under protective custody at their main HQ where Foy awaited his fate, which was at that time either execution or lifelong incarceration.

By a stroke of luck, Foy would eventually meet Kha and Tiida. Kha and him clicked in a rather strange way, with both usually making silent conversations, but it was the latter that left a deep impression on him.

With Kha’s help, Saint Church intervened and stalled the final verdict for as long as they could. Meanwhile, Tiida would visit Foy whenever he stopped by the HQ. Maybe it was guilt from leaving his sister alone whenever he had to get ready to deploy, but whatever motive was, the older Lanstar taught the young android on the side the basics of ranged magic. VEDA theorized his actions to have been aimed at cheering the perpetually glum child, and possibly teaching Foy how to operate his still undiscovered Inherent Skill, as such skills often were related to shooting. That instead led to the discovery of his latent magical talent, which was mindboggling as he had no detectable Linker Core. Foy quickly learnt more ranged magics from Tiida, and was able to use some simple illusion magic.

Carym ultimately managed to secure a deal that would see Foy being transferred to the Church’s adoption program under a supervising officer, and she managed to appoint Tiida for that role. It was something Foy was jubilant about, as he by that time had grown very close to Tiida.

As luck would have it, when the day neared, Foy instead witnessed Tiida pass on adruptly. The boy was heart-broken at the loss of the only person he had come to consider family member. The anger at the stubborn villain boiled over, and Foy vowed to avenge his death. That lit the latent fires of retribution within, bringing his Divine Linker Core to life and becoming the first person after Kha to be discovered with the potential to be a Cleric-Knight.

Immediately scouted by Celestial Being, Foy was then transferred to the care of the Knight-Sisters of the Sankt Alexei Convent were they taught him whatever they knew of Divine magic control. The plan was that he, Gimmy and Kha would eventually team up and train together to become paladins close to the original battle-brothers of the Cleric-Knights chapter.

Embittered, Foy drew on his anger and trained hard, almost to his circuits’ breaking points.

Nanoha/Cente Gravia

Foy would meet the fiery and reckless Gimmy when he turned 15 at the start of the Pilgrim Duels. Kha would lead the clampdown using a new custom-made Grade Terminator Strike, catching the android’s interest in the Grade Terminator armor and driving him to work even harder to earn his way out of his Aegis Armor. Gimmy and Foy worked on the sidelines to the main events, something they’d call on hindsight the Hidden Pilgrim Duels.

Their first break came when Kha was “KIA” and the Libram fell into the care of Fate T. Hallaoun. Then, Gimmy and Foy fought side-by-side with Fate at the open battlegrounds around the sanctum of the Opel Mages, leading a charge that broke Fate into the inner grounds almost at the cost of their own lives.

Kha eventually returned and granted both boys Librams of their own. Now gifted with new powers, the resurgent duo kicked the daemonic summons of the Opel Mages and Charlotte Aznabelle’s minions back to the depths from which they came in a massive explosion of manly spirit and hotblood.

Rebuilt for StrikerS

The year is MC 0075. Justicar Foy Rokker has earned the right to don the Grade Terminator, and was assigned the then-vacant Virtue. With Virtue’s power, Foy intends to fill the big shoes left behind by “Tiera Erde” and ensure that the great man’s legacy would never be forgotten.



Powers

The unique thing about Foy is that his Nemesis Force Device is his entire body, a by-product created by the combination of his uniform magical awakening and his IS also utilizing his entire body to broadcast micropulse electric fields.

As such, Foy is perfectly comfortable using any weapon or device, or even go bared-handed in his endless fight to bring justice. This is evident in that Foy’s other less-used armor kits Power and Dominion (Details Classified Level 9) rely on completely different combat niches.

However, due to first Tiida’s and later Nanoha’s influence, Foy is not a jack of all trades but excels at ranged magics and focuses on gun-fu as his Belka combat specialization. He even learnt some swordcraft from the Takamachi instructor and applies it via her Exalted Saver technique. And in situations where he’s really flat-footed, his ultra-thick armor and overcharged field generator gemstones can buy him more time than the others, and the WM Bazooka is one mean hammer.

That’s not counting the instances where he would just Cast Off to reveal Nadleeh.


Grade Terminator Activation — At the yell of “Virtue, Frame On!” Foy summons the self-propelled plate armor from his Lunar Fold and suits up in a “digital wire-mesh” that is colored and solidified into reality. By giving a different armor set’s activation command like Power or Dominion, Foy could summon a different Terminator armor set.

Warp Magica, Scatter — This spreads a field of WM particles out of Virtue extends Foy's magical senses, helping him to find disturbances. This further spreads the field in which psychic communications is rendered useless.

Warp Magica, Feed — This directs the Lanstar Bolters to direct a beam of raw WM particles at a nearby Warp Core, allowing the Grade Terminator to launch an even more powered up attack.


Defensive Abilities

Grade Terminator armor “Virtue” — a well-armored but slow and oh-so-chubby Terminator-grade soulforged armor equipped with a Warp Core magical assist system. As it is with its other cousins, Virtue forms an additional layer to Foy’s Inherent Equipment, and is named after the second rank of middle class Angels of God.

This variant, other than sporting an impressive load of material and field defences, carries a pair of ultra-heavy Lanstar Bolter turrets on its shoulders and a WM Bazooka. Foy’s personal Armed Device Valkyrie is plugged into the WM bazooka and functions as its hilt.

Change Armor System — Virtue changes its external armor gears, adopting different characteristics. Knowledge of the other modes before due is classified Level 9.

Cast Off— This ability "detonates" Foy's outer Knight Armor to counteract an attack, a bind, or just jettison the excess cover, revealing Nadleen. It was based on Nanoha’s Jacket Purge.

Nadleeh — The feminine, complete with Foy’s long hair flowing out of the closed helm, Inherent Equipment Nadleeh forms the lowest layer is released when Foy jettisons all of his outermost layers.

Nadleeh’s power is that she amplifies the effectiveness of Foy’s IS Macro Dominator. But as a melee-combatant, her swordsmanship is that of the Tang martial arts school known as Bixie Jianfa. (Details Classified Level 9)

Force Silhouette — A variation of Tiida's illusion magic that uses magical and scientific countermeasures to render Foy invisible when stationary.


Offensive Abilities

Exalted Saver — Nanoha's ability to summon a beam saber for close combat was taught by Kha to all of his direct juniors except Gimmy, who preferred using his revolver tonfas.

Crossfire Shooter — Foy's rapid-reaction attack magic, creating a number of magical energy balls usually spinning in a ring around the Lanstar Bolters prior to launch. The balls can be guided in the air, and sometimes the Knight will use this magic to attack the target from the rear.

Shoot Barret — The heavier blind-fire magical round launched from the Lanstar Bolters in Jormundgand mode. Fired in 2s, or sequentially, or all 4 at once.

Divine Buster — As taught by Nanoha, Foy fires the classic particle attack from WM Bazooka.

Divine Buster Extension — Divine Buster powered up and fired from the extended WM Bazooka.

Inherent Skill: Macro Dominator

Foy has the innate ability to manipulate individual electrons, much like Uno’s IS. The difference is that his system runs on twin-carriageway electron micro-pulses. This makes for an offensive IS that instead of just observing and integrating events and information carried in electrical and magical circuits, it also allows him to hack into electrical systems and suppress, even take over, its activities at a meta-digital level, completely bypassing soft defences installed. This can affect even other sentokijin and mages wearing Frames, allowing him to forcibly paralyze or even take control of them.
That is why his IS is called the Macro Dominator.

Foy uses a lower output of his IS to interface with VEDA and make adjustments or read predictions or files. This allowed Celestial Being’s engineers to completely do away with the human middle man and leave Foy as the sole direct human to computer interface with the Oracle system. This is a role that Foy takes on with great relish.

However, due to the permitivity of free space, this IS naturally has a very low penetrance. In practice, that means Foy can only hack into things he is in contact with. To make his IS more practical, Nadleeh was built using parts cannibalized from the wrecked Virtue to amplify his IS’s range and power by several times. She accomplishes this feat by "singing" along with Foy’s waves, adding ultra-high frequency sonic waves and oscillating pulses of WM particles into the mix and increasing the reach and effectiveness of Macro Dominator.

This boost is so powerful that it allowed him to pin down 2 ERW with just his will alone, until Uno intervened. And it is this Ace up his sleeve that lets Foy declare “Love is his best weapon”.

History

Foy’s first memory was created on the administrated Rim World #93, current name Far Anti-Spinward Frontier. Before then, Foy had no memory of who bore him or where he’d come from, not even why was he made in the first place. The one thing he knew was that he’s always been on the run as the scientists looking after him moved from lab to lab to escape detention. Foy didn’t have any sob stories that one would expect out of a lab rat, as the scientists didn’t even conduct any tests on him, apart from ensuring that he had enough nourishment to keep growing. Even so, there was nothing during that time for him to cheer about.

The TSAB caught up with the scientists and after the raid, they impounded and placed Foy under protective custody at their main HQ where Foy awaited his fate, which was at that time either execution or lifelong incarceration.

By a stroke of luck, Foy would eventually meet Kha and Tiida. Kha and him clicked in a rather strange way, with both usually making silent conversations, but it was the latter that left a deep impression on him.

With Kha’s help, Saint Church intervened and stalled the final verdict for as long as they could. Meanwhile, Tiida would visit Foy whenever he stopped by the HQ. Maybe it was guilt from leaving his sister alone whenever he had to get ready to deploy, but whatever motive was, the older Lanstar taught the young android on the side the basics of ranged magic. VEDA theorized his actions to have been aimed at cheering the perpetually glum child, and possibly teaching Foy how to operate his still undiscovered Inherent Skill, as such skills often were related to shooting. That instead led to the discovery of his latent magical talent, which was mindboggling as he had no detectable Linker Core. Foy quickly learnt more ranged magics from Tiida, and was able to use some simple illusion magic.

Carym ultimately managed to secure a deal that would see Foy being transferred to the Church’s adoption program under a supervising officer, and she managed to appoint Tiida for that role. It was something Foy was jubilant about, as he by that time had grown very close to Tiida.

As luck would have it, when the day neared, Foy instead witnessed Tiida pass on adruptly. The boy was heart-broken at the loss of the only person he had come to consider family member. The anger at the stubborn villain boiled over, and Foy vowed to avenge his death. That lit the latent fires of retribution within, bringing his Divine Linker Core to life and becoming the first person after Kha to be discovered with the potential to be a Cleric-Knight.

Immediately scouted by Celestial Being, Foy was then transferred to the care of the Knight-Sisters of the Sankt Alexei Convent were they taught him whatever they knew of Divine magic control. The plan was that he, Gimmy and Kha would eventually team up and train together to become paladins close to the original battle-brothers of the Cleric-Knights chapter.

Embittered, Foy drew on his anger and trained hard, almost to his circuits’ breaking points.

Nanoha/Cente Gravia

Foy would meet the fiery and reckless Gimmy when he turned 15 at the start of the Pilgrim Duels. Kha would lead the clampdown using a new custom-made Grade Terminator Strike, catching the android’s interest in the Grade Terminator armor and driving him to work even harder to earn his way out of his Aegis Armor. Gimmy and Foy worked on the sidelines to the main events, something they’d call on hindsight the Hidden Pilgrim Duels.

Their first break came when Kha was “KIA” and the Libram fell into the care of Fate T. Hallaoun. Then, Gimmy and Foy fought side-by-side with Fate at the open battlegrounds around the sanctum of the Opel Mages, leading a charge that broke Fate into the inner grounds almost at the cost of their own lives.

Kha eventually returned and granted both boys Librams of their own. Now gifted with new powers, the resurgent duo kicked the daemonic summons of the Opel Mages and Charlotte Aznabelle’s minions back to the depths from which they came in a massive explosion of manly spirit and hotblood.

The year is MC 0075. Justicar Foy Rokker has earned the right to don the Grade Terminator, and was assigned the then-vacant Virtue. With Virtue’s power, Foy intends to fill the big shoes left behind by “Tiera Erde” and ensure that the great man’s legacy would never be forgotten.



Powers

The unique thing about Foy is that his Nemesis Force Device is his entire body, a by-product created by the combination of his uniform magical awakening and his IS also utilizing his entire body to broadcast micropulse electric fields.

As such, Foy is perfectly comfortable using any weapon or device, or even go bared-handed in his endless fight to bring justice. This is evident in that Foy’s other less-used armor kits Power and Dominion (Details Classified Level 9) rely on completely different combat niches.

However, due to first Tiida’s and later Nanoha’s influence, Foy is not a jack of all trades but excels at ranged magics and focuses on gun-fu as his Belka combat specialization. He even learnt some swordcraft from the Takamachi instructor and applies it via her Exalted Saver technique. And in situations where he’s really flat-footed, his ultra-thick armor and overcharged field generator gemstones can buy him more time than the others, and the WM Bazooka is one mean hammer.

That’s not counting the instances where he would just Cast Off to reveal Nadleeh.


Grade Terminator Activation — At the yell of “Virtue, Frame On!” Foy summons the self-propelled plate armor from his Lunar Fold and suits up in a “digital wire-mesh” that is colored and solidified into reality. By giving a different armor set’s activation command like Power or Dominion, Foy could summon a different Terminator armor set.

Warp Magica, Scatter — This spreads a field of WM particles out of Virtue extends Foy's magical senses, helping him to find disturbances. This further spreads the field in which psychic communications is rendered useless.

Warp Magica, Feed — This directs the Lanstar Bolters to direct a beam of raw WM particles at a nearby Warp Core, allowing the Grade Terminator to launch an even more powered up attack.


Defensive Abilities

Grade Terminator armor “Virtue” — a well-armored but slow and oh-so-chubby Terminator-grade soulforged armor equipped with a Warp Core magical assist system. As it is with its other cousins, Virtue forms an additional layer to Foy’s Inherent Equipment, and is named after the second rank of middle class Angels of God.

This variant, other than sporting an impressive load of material and field defences, carries a pair of ultra-heavy Lanstar Bolter turrets on its shoulders and a WM Bazooka. Foy’s personal Armed Device Valkyrie is plugged into the WM bazooka and functions as its hilt.

Divine Buster — As taught by Nanoha, Foy fires the classic particle attack from WM Bazooka.

Inherent Skill: Macro Dominator

Foy has the innate ability to manipulate individual electrons, much like Uno’s IS. The difference is that his system runs on twin-carriageway electron micro-pulses. This makes for an offensive IS that instead of just observing and integrating events and information carried in electrical and magical circuits, it also allows him to hack into electrical systems and suppress, even take over, its activities at a meta-digital level, completely bypassing soft defences installed. This can affect even other sentokijin and mages wearing Frames, allowing him to forcibly paralyze or even take control of them.
That is why his IS is called the Macro Dominator.

Foy uses a lower output of his IS to interface with VEDA and make adjustments or read predictions or files. This allowed Celestial Being’s engineers to completely do away with the human middle man and leave Foy as the sole direct human to computer interface with the Oracle system. This is a role that Foy takes on with great relish.

However, due to the permitivity of free space, this IS naturally has a very low penetrance. In practice, that means Foy can only hack into things he is in contact with. To make his IS more practical, Nadleeh was built using parts cannibalized from the wrecked Virtue to amplify his IS’s range and power by several times. She accomplishes this feat by "singing" along with Foy’s waves, adding ultra-high frequency sonic waves and oscillating pulses of WM particles into the mix and increasing the reach and effectiveness of Macro Dominator.

This boost is so powerful that it allowed him to pin down 2 ERW with just his will alone, until Uno intervened. And it is this Ace up his sleeve that lets Foy declare “Love is his best weapon”.

This makes for an offensive IS that instead of just observing and integrating events and information carried in electrical and magical circuits, it also allows him to hack into electrical systems and suppress, even take over, its activities at a meta-digital level, completely bypassing soft defences installed. This can affect even other sentokijin and mages wearing Frames, allowing him to forcibly paralyze or even take control of them.
That is why his IS is called the Macro Dominator.

Foy uses a lower output of his IS to interface with VEDA and make adjustments or read predictions or files. This allowed Celestial Being’s engineers to completely do away with the human middle man and leave Foy as the sole direct human to computer interface with the Oracle system. This is a role that Foy takes on with great relish.

However, due to the permitivity of free space, this IS naturally has a very low penetrance. In practice, that means Foy can only hack into things he is in contact with. To make his IS more practical, Nadleeh was built using parts cannibalized from the wrecked Virtue to amplify his IS’s range and power by several times. She accomplishes this feat by "singing" along with Foy’s waves, adding ultra-high frequency sonic waves and oscillating pulses of WM particles into the mix and increasing the reach and effectiveness of Macro Dominator.

This boost is so powerful that it allowed him to pin down 2 ERW with just his will alone, until Uno intervened. And it is this Ace up his sleeve that lets Foy declare “Love is his best weapon”.

Got two more fight segments written tonight. Once again, I hope I accurately portrayed style, personality, and tactics (or lack therof) of chracters.

Spoiler for Energy Management and Combo Moves:

Crash wasn't having it quite as easy as EDI had. After catching up with Fate, she'd quickly counter-attacked him as he attempted to tag her with a shot. Nearly catching him in the face with a thunder-smasher attack. This then quickly devolved into a circling snipe-fest as they raced back and forth around one of the cumulonimbus clouds that had been left behind the front earlier that day.

Crash himself was running on adrenaline and near panic mode. After his initial attack was counter-acted, Fate's near miss retaliation quickly killed his confidence in his battle plan. All he could think of now was to keep moving, shoot back, and try and think of something.

Fate snapped off to the side as one of his bolts raced past. Her defenses weren't the same as Nanoha's and she didn't want to waste her energy on guarding. Actually, her main problem was that after getting hit by that concussion, she was having slight trouble maintaining her equalibrium. Something she considered very important in an air battle. Momentary dizzy spells kept following her fast orientations as she went from rightside up, to upside down, and then down into dives before leaping into snap climbs. It wasn't quite dangerous, but it was annoying, and she was tempted to say her close combat might be affected. But this was getting them nowhere, and she needed to get in close for a good hit.

Roaring up over the top of the cloud, spinning, and firing a few random shots at the ace, Crash was not privy to this small insight, just trying to keep his distance from the close combat expert while he tried to pick her off... But the rounds were just too weak to be effeective as she either dodged, or used Bardiche to deflect them to the sides. He needed to buy time, and get a chance to come up with something.

"This is getting us nowhere," he muttered. "Battery? Got any ideas?"

[INITIALIZING M.A.D. ACTIVE MANAGEMENT]

"The MADAM?" he asked, then fired another round at the distant form of Fate as he ducked behind the cloud to hide. "Worth a shot at least."

On his Heads Up Display, a new indicator graph appeared in the lower left hand corner. Showing Three lines labeled M, A, and D. Standing for Mobility, Attack, and Defense.

[ROUTING MAGIC ENERGY MANAGEMENT TO MADAM]

The lines shifted, once equall, suddenly A and D shifted to M. Crash felt the sudden rush, as if he could move faster.

At that moment, Fate broke through the cloud, racing at him with Bardiche swung back to strike.

"Held still too long!" he berated himself, and dove straight down. He immediately noted that it felt as if he had just pushed straight off a solid object.

[BE ADVISED, ATTACK AND DEFENSE NOT EFFECTIVE WHEN MOBILITY IS PEAK, A TRADE OFF WILL BE REQUIRED]

"Okay!" he retorted to the warning. "Mark the bandit!"

[AFFIRMATIVE]


Fate Dove after Crash as he shot towards the water some twenty-thousand feet below. He began to aggressively weave in an attempt to throw her off as she started to close the gap.

"Welcome to the Crash Course in Air Combat Manuevering!" Crash caught himself growling as he watched the indicator marker count off distance in the corner of his HUD. In the stress of the moment, he had fallen to his habbit mouthing off sarchastic remarks to anyone who could hear it. Even if it was only himself. "Now you too can have the experience of running for your life as an Ace mage uses you for target practice!"

And then he pulled back, swinging himself out of his dive. The Marker indicating fate's position suddenly began losing digits at a frightening rate, turning red as she closed to Melee range.

Fate swung back with Bardiche, whatever crash was planning, she wasn't going to let him finish.

Crash jumped. Or if he'd been standing on a solid surface, he would have jumped. Instead, the propperties of open air meant he simply went through a jumping motion and came to a complete stop in mid air, neutral Gs making it feel like he was weightless for just a few moments as he leaned back, tightening his grip on the Multiform Rifle.

Sensing the shift in his muscle tension, Battery relayed a message to the MADAM subsystem, which reacted in a milisecond. Crash felt the sudden loss of that movement feeling, but at the same time, suddenly felt like he could blow something up. He reached an inverted position even as Bardiche barely missed nicking off his face plate. Fate kept her momentum and shot past him, spinning around to face him as she did so. Crash continued on through another flip until he was facing directly down at her again. This time the rifle tucked into his shoulder.

'CRACK!'

Crash's aim wasn't exactly stellar... but the point still came across as the bolt of magical energy grazed one of her black hair ties. If her eyes hadn't just decieved her. The shot was at least three times thicker than the weak bolts he'd been firing from that device. She responded in kind with Bardiche. The Axe-like head glowing as she took aim.

[PLASMA LANCER]

A bolt of superheated electrical plasma arced upwards as Crash returned to the normal upright position. At the same moment, Crash felt the MADAM shift from attack, to defense, and battery barked its own response.

[WEDGE SHIELD]

Without any energy for flying, he started to drop, even as an oddly shaped barrier interposed itself between him and the incoming magical attack. The high energy magic bolt struck, but thanks to the very shallow angle of the shield, deflected off on an oblique trajectory further into the sky where it exploded harmlessly.

The MADAM shifted Crash back to mobility level, returning flight to him as he immediately started climbing again.

[HAKKEN FORM]

Bardiche's head rocked back as the revolver mechanism at its base rotated and snapped into a cartridge with a puff of smoke, and ignited a scyth made of plasma energy.


[WARNING! CARTRIDGE IMPULSE DETECTED AT SIX-O-CLOCK!]

Crash broke his ascent and banked hard hard right as the marker indicating fate's position blinked yellow on his HUD.

"NOW WHAT?!"

Fate came to a halt in mid air, shaking off the slowely decreasing dizzy spells and swung back hard with Bardiche.

"HAKKEN SABER!"

And she swung the device all the way around, hurling the plasma arc right off the end so that it would intercept Crash's flight path.

[!!!DANGER!!! HOSTILE LAUNCH DETECTED!!!]

"OH! SHIT!" Crash's eyes snapped wide and he spun in mid air. The only time Battery was supposed to give a verbal launch warning like that was for attacks that would beat its estimated defense level. The Heads Up Display immeidately bracketed the incoming boomerrang of plasma in red and an ETA marker.

[BLITZ RUSH]

Crash shifted to the side to let the attack whip by, but its slow pace immediately screamed foul in his mind. About the same time Battery screamed its own thoughts.

[DECOY! TAKE EVAISIVE ACTION!]

Crash searched his HUD for Fate's marker and looked up, finding she was now above him, arms high over her head for a killing strike. He immediately kicked himself for hesitating.

[HAKKEN SLASH!]

Fate came hurling down at him, shouting a battle cry. Crash didn't have any position advantage of his own. And no time to change momentum. No time to create a strong enough defense, or launch counter-offense. And he panicked.

"DUMP AND JUMP!"

[HOWLER FLARES!]

'POPOPOPOP! POPOPOPOP!'

Sixteen small red orbs were ejected into the air, at the same time, Crash felt the surge of energy as Battery snapped a cartridge. Fate began her swing, almost on Crash.

[MACH STRAFE!]

'THUM-BOOM!!!'

Fate was taken totally by surprise as she overswung right into empty air and flipped once before righting herself. Crash had simply appeared to fold right in on himself and vanish in a flash. The loud concussion it gave off didn't help things. However, just as she registered this fact, the small orb cloud she'd ended up in the midst of detonated in a tumult of small blinding flashes and loud bangs This of course, complicating her hearing problems once more as she grabbed her head in pain.


Cracking back into reality some five-hundred meters away and above, Crash quickly looked around to ensure he was clear as Battery discharged the spent cartridge it had used to extend the hop. He needed to change the battlefield to his advantage. Spying a little bit of whitish tan off to the southeast. He realized they had carried a considerable distance towards Sand Island. He could get some footing there, and apply more power if he didn't have to fly. Quickly turning and diving into a cloud before he could be seen, he shot away from Fate, accellerating to MACH two as he did so.


Fate shook off the disorienting effects of being caught right in the middle of that cloud of noise. It was slightly irritating to have such a perfect strike completely and totally evaided like that. She quickly scanned her surroundings, but found herself alone.

[SIR! OPPONENT FLEEING SOUTHEAST AT CONSIDERABLE VELOCITY!]

Bardiche warned her repeatedly. But the only thing Fate could really hear, was the repeated thumping of her heartbeat, and a hollow ringing sound made worse by the flares.

[SIR? SIR!? SHOULD WE NOT PERSUE THE TARGET? SIR!? AKNOWLEDGE!]

But Bardiche's urgent, and repetative inquiry however, fell upon deaf ears. Litterally.

One thing I've noticed about fate, at least in the first two seasons, is her use of a projectile decoy shot to cover her body rushes. I also noted her tendancy to retaliate from just about any angle as long as she can see the target.

Spoiler for King of the Hill, at the Top of the Sky:

'Nanoha, I've lost sight of Crash.'
Nanoha picked up fate's psychic transmission as she persued EDI at extreme high altitude.
'Roger, I'm still chasing EDI... Keep your eyes peeled.'
'Will do, I just wish I could hear better. He got me with flares.'
'You too?'
'Seems to be a popular favorite around here.'
Nanoha smiled, and then shivered.
EDI had opted to see the endurance limits of Nanoha's body, and had gone well above the marked Death Zone altitude for Mid-Childa. It was cold, and at... Raising Heart had counted off, sixty-four thousand, seven-hundred and forty-eight feet. ...the air was very thin.
In fact, EDI had checked the exact numbers. It was negetive seventy degrees Fahrenheit, and the air pressure was zero-point-eight-two-five pounds per square inch. A fractional one EIGHTEENTH that of the surface.
Luckly, Nanoha's barrier jacket kept a field of air around her body at a more comfortable pressure and temperature, but she could still feel the chill eating away at it constantly. However, despite this, she had to keep moving forward. Magical as it was, the barrier wasn't manufacturing air for her, so she had to constantly 'scoop' oxygen out of the thin air by flying through it. That wasn't too much of a problem however since EDI was flying some distance in front of her at high speed.

Even still, her breathing rate had nearly tripled from the struggle to get oxygen.

EDI was maintaining his own careful high altitude balance. Though he didn't need oxygen to function like Nanoha, he needed enough air to give his wings lift, and his magical engines thrust. And that meant more power to the engines to keep his speed up to scoop that air for thrust. It also meant his manuevability was degraded by having less action on his control surfaces.


Determined not to be shown up by the Drone Hunter, Nanoha didn't back down from the challenge. She kept pace with the craft as it banked and weaved so far above the clouds, that the sky above was twinkling with stars in broad daylight. She had noticed after a while, that EDI's turns and weaves weren't as tight as they should be...

Logging Nanoha's reduced agressive state, EDI decided to check in on his Wingman.

"What is your status BANSHEE ONE?" EDI resonated over his communications link. Sixty-thousand feet below, Crash responded in a filtered voice.
"I'm getting a better position against Lightning Unit, how about you?"
"I am currently attempting to wear down the performance of Stars Unit," the AI informed. "It would not be advantagious to continue to engage her at maximum performance levels without mission specific elements for defeating her."
"If that means tire her out first, I hear you!"

Nanoha was starting to become impatient. Her oxygen starved mind was demanding a quick end to her concious torture of itself in this low air hell. The barrier jacket was struggling to get what she needed from the air, but it was starting to reach its limits as EDI pitched up and climbed even higher, risking a stall. Nanoha was too stubborn to give up even now, and pushed further up after him.

Raising Heart took note of Blood Oxygen enrichment levels, and snapped a warning.

[MASTER, USE CAUTION]

Nanoha's hearing was still damaged from getting caught by the Iron Curtain, and she herself only heard the voice as a muffled tone.

EDI banked hard to the left, sliding excessively and coming dangerously close to a mid air stall. Nanoha reacted, bringing her staff to the front and leveling for a shot, gasping out her attack as she did so.

"Diviiiine..."

EDI detected a noticable five percent drop in her reaction time. In the time it took her to gasp for breath between words, EDI continued and calculated five-hundred seperate outcomes, narrowing them down to three courses of action by probability, and acted.

"BUSTER!!!!"

Raising Heart fired its pink beam of magical Energy. At the same moment, EDI altered the thrust vectoring of his engines and snapped his internal bay open and selected his buster, rolling sideways and swinging around rapidly as Nanoha's attack blasted past his position. This time actually stalling somewhat in the air, he used his verticle lift fan to buy the calculated time needed to lock on. And as he did so, fired the buster energy he'd gathered.

Now with her mind even more oxygen starved from firing the strenuous attack, Nanoha barely registered the incoming Orange beam for over a second. Raising Heart realized it had to act in place of its master.

[FLASH MOVE!]

Nanoha was jerked out of place as her device moved her away from the attack. EDI quickly logged that information as his stability failed and he dropped into a stall.

Now out of danger for a moment, Nanoha had time to breathe, or at least try to. Her vision was waivering and giving way to blackness on the edges as she gasped desperately for air.
Noting the Blood/Oxygen levels in its master nearing critical, Raising Heart barked a very clear, and very loud response.

[MASTER!!! WE, MUST, DESCEND!!!]

Nanoha blankly nodded between ragged gasps, and for a lack of any other functional abilities, did the only thing her mind could comprehend to go down.

She simply stopped flying, and fell.



"Scramble a rescue helicopter!" Martin barked.

"HOLD UP!" Roland followed in so fast Martin had barely closed his mouth. "Cherry?"

"She's still concious," the AI informed them from her screen. "That means she's still in the fight."

Roland put his hand on his Chin as Hayate glanced at a Vital Signs monitor that blinked up in concern. It showed Nanoha's Blood/Oxygen levels as compared to normal levels. She noted with a sigh that it was already starting to climb back up as Nanoha's descent accellerated with the help of gravity.

"You gotta' admit," Bloodberry opened fresh commentary. "That was pretty hard core right there."

"EPIC is more the word for it," Cooper interjected. "Playing King of the Hill, at the Top of the Sky."

"Well, she better get herself back in gear," Fox stated flatly. "EDI's already there."


Indeed, EDI was already well recovered from his stall, now circling Nanoha in a downward spiral. He would be sure to confirm his target was down before disengaging to assist Crash. Not given access to monitoring data at GEOFRONT, he could not confirm her conciousness level.

Nanoha herself was slowely coming back to full awareness as the air density increased with her fall. Raising Heart was counting off altitude as they dropped. She could hear the roar of EDI as he circled their position like a Shark patiently waiting to make the kill. Getting a deep lungfull of oxygen rich air again, she finally shook off the feeling of nearly passing out from suffocation. Oxygen hit her brain like one of Vita's hammerblows, and she immediately understood her position and situation.

[FIFTEEN THOUSAND FEET]

Making a note NEVER to try that stunt again, Nanoha took stock of EDI's pattern and gripped Raising Heart.

[ARE YOU OKAY, MY MASTER?]

"I'm fine, get ready..."

[I AM READY!]

Nanoha spun and took aim, charging her Axel Shooter as she halted herself in mid air. EDI detected the magical charge and the sudden velocity change and broke his spiral, gunning his engines to out pace her.

"SHOOOOOOT!"

She only got off six shots, but each and every one of them scored home against EDI's snap barrier response, shaking the MADCAP as it accellerated away at high speed. Nanoha quickly aligned herself and gave chase. The fight was far from over.

An aspect of air combat no one probably has ever thought of. Just how high can those mages fly before they can't fly any higher? Personally, I think that while barrier jackets are good for filtering the air, and controling the air around the mage, they aren't exactly space suits. And Oxygen deprivation can be an underestimated foe.

Er, yeah, it's set out of fanon timeline, which to my knowledge isn't quite established past StrikerS before. Now the season officially over, a lot of things pick up in that direction. Though I had wanted to integrate GuardianS into the timeline, it doesn't seem possible at the moment. Maybe if I could do some co-authorship with Kha or Nighty ... I don't know how to put her there, though.

Oh, this makes me a little guilty. My satisfaction in writing doesn't stem from the fact that I can write longer than most or impress people with some flowery words. The satisfaction comes from the story being able to touch people's hearts, which is more than enough for me. That's the purpose of writing, to me at least. So, I guess I don't really mind the story being gobbled up as soon as it's published.

True enough, I realize that partway through the story.

I don't know why, but I seem to lack some organization in the story department, where if everything's planned out nicely (a simple draft, actually), I'd prefer them to be included inside, regardless of the length. Throughout writing, I sometimes get additional plotlines which I think are appropriate, and they are included as well. Hence, the overarch and flow break. The glaring example would be this chapter, where there's actually only five planned scenes. The rest came some time later. (And truly, I could've just introduced more chapters than planned, though I don't know why I opted to write this insanity >.>)

Signum seems too "perfect" to be expanded further, though as realistic as it can get, nobody could be that way. The one way that I have to change that is to introduce her silent insecurities, which is actually part of her becoming more human and less program. The justifications given in the chapter do not sound very convincing, I admit.

I actually planned to have Aurion finish the line of a poem, though it changed partway into a song, and er, so he "sang". Admittedly, his musical talent isn't that good, and what he did "sing" was just actually an inflection of tone that didn't become a song. (More like him "speaking" the song than anything. ) *runs from Aurion*

Everything was done so well that I was taken to an emotional roller-coaster ride from astounded, to jubilant, to sad, to shocked, etc.! Hayate collapsing whould do quite well to alleviate the cries of HAXX here. In any case, Hayate was completely AWESOME here!

I liked the part where the three of them bonded the most! You can really feel how close Hayate's bond with the Wolkenritter are, with an added bonus of a very in-character guilt trip for all three of them, especially Signum! (Though I never expected the crying part. But nonetheless, I still liked it very much.) This shows several times more Hayate+Wolky (sans Vita) interactions compared to the StrikerS anime!

Crash wasn't having it quite as easy as EDI had. After catching up with Fate, she'd quickly counter-attacked him as he attempted to tag her with a shot. Nearly catching him in the face with a thunder-smasher attack. This then quickly devolved into a circling snipe-fest as they raced back and forth around one of the cumulonimbus clouds that had been left behind the front earlier that day.

Crash himself was running on adrenaline and near panic mode. After his initial attack was counter-acted, Fate's near miss retaliation quickly killed his confidence in his battle plan. All he could think of now was to keep moving, shoot back, and try and think of something.

Fate snapped off to the side as one of his bolts raced past. Her defenses weren't the same as Nanoha's and she didn't want to waste her energy on guarding. Actually, her main problem was that after getting hit by that concussion, she was having slight trouble maintaining her equalibrium. Something she considered very important in an air battle. Momentary dizzy spells kept following her fast orientations as she went from rightside up, to upside down, and then down into dives before leaping into snap climbs. It wasn't quite dangerous, but it was annoying, and she was tempted to say her close combat might be affected. But this was getting them nowhere, and she needed to get in close for a good hit.

Roaring up over the top of the cloud, spinning, and firing a few random shots at the ace, Crash was not privy to this small insight, just trying to keep his distance from the close combat expert while he tried to pick her off... But the rounds were just too weak to be effeective as she either dodged, or used Bardiche to deflect them to the sides. He needed to buy time, and get a chance to come up with something.

"This is getting us nowhere," he muttered. "Battery? Got any ideas?"

[INITIALIZING M.A.D. ACTIVE MANAGEMENT]

"The MADAM?" he asked, then fired another round at the distant form of Fate as he ducked behind the cloud to hide. "Worth a shot at least."

On his Heads Up Display, a new indicator graph appeared in the lower left hand corner. Showing Three lines labeled M, A, and D. Standing for Mobility, Attack, and Defense.

[ROUTING MAGIC ENERGY MANAGEMENT TO MADAM]

The lines shifted, once equall, suddenly A and D shifted to M. Crash felt the sudden rush, as if he could move faster.

At that moment, Fate broke through the cloud, racing at him with Bardiche swung back to strike.

"Held still too long!" he berated himself, and dove straight down. He immediately noted that it felt as if he had just pushed straight off a solid object.

[BE ADVISED, ATTACK AND DEFENSE NOT EFFECTIVE WHEN MOBILITY IS PEAK, A TRADE OFF WILL BE REQUIRED]

"Okay!" he retorted to the warning. "Mark the bandit!"

[AFFIRMATIVE]


Fate Dove after Crash as he shot towards the water some twenty-thousand feet below. He began to aggressively weave in an attempt to throw her off as she started to close the gap.

"Welcome to the Crash Course in Air Combat Manuevering!" Crash caught himself growling as he watched the indicator marker count off distance in the corner of his HUD. In the stress of the moment, he had fallen to his habbit mouthing off sarchastic remarks to anyone who could hear it. Even if it was only himself. "Now you too can have the experience of running for your life as an Ace mage uses you for target practice!"

And then he pulled back, swinging himself out of his dive. The Marker indicating fate's position suddenly began losing digits at a frightening rate, turning red as she closed to Melee range.

Fate swung back with Bardiche, whatever crash was planning, she wasn't going to let him finish.

Crash jumped. Or if he'd been standing on a solid surface, he would have jumped. Instead, the propperties of open air meant he simply went through a jumping motion and came to a complete stop in mid air, neutral Gs making it feel like he was weightless for just a few moments as he leaned back, tightening his grip on the Multiform Rifle.

Sensing the shift in his muscle tension, Battery relayed a message to the MADAM subsystem, which reacted in a milisecond. Crash felt the sudden loss of that movement feeling, but at the same time, suddenly felt like he could blow something up. He reached an inverted position even as Bardiche barely missed nicking off his face plate. Fate kept her momentum and shot past him, spinning around to face him as she did so. Crash continued on through another flip until he was facing directly down at her again. This time the rifle tucked into his shoulder.

'CRACK!'

Crash's aim wasn't exactly stellar... but the point still came across as the bolt of magical energy grazed one of her black hair ties. If her eyes hadn't just decieved her. The shot was at least three times thicker than the weak bolts he'd been firing from that device. She responded in kind with Bardiche. The Axe-like head glowing as she took aim.

[PLASMA LANCER]

A bolt of superheated electrical plasma arced upwards as Crash returned to the normal upright position. At the same moment, Crash felt the MADAM shift from attack, to defense, and battery barked its own response.

[WEDGE SHIELD]

Without any energy for flying, he started to drop, even as an oddly shaped barrier interposed itself between him and the incoming magical attack. The high energy magic bolt struck, but thanks to the very shallow angle of the shield, deflected off on an oblique trajectory further into the sky where it exploded harmlessly.

The MADAM shifted Crash back to mobility level, returning flight to him as he immediately started climbing again.

[HAKKEN FORM]

Bardiche's head rocked back as the revolver mechanism at its base rotated and snapped into a cartridge with a puff of smoke, and ignited a scyth made of plasma energy.


[WARNING! CARTRIDGE IMPULSE DETECTED AT SIX-O-CLOCK!]

Crash broke his ascent and banked hard hard right as the marker indicating fate's position blinked yellow on his HUD.

"NOW WHAT?!"

Fate came to a halt in mid air, shaking off the slowely decreasing dizzy spells and swung back hard with Bardiche.

"HAKKEN SABER!"

And she swung the device all the way around, hurling the plasma arc right off the end so that it would intercept Crash's flight path.

[!!!DANGER!!! HOSTILE LAUNCH DETECTED!!!]

"OH! SHIT!" Crash's eyes snapped wide and he spun in mid air. The only time Battery was supposed to give a verbal launch warning like that was for attacks that would beat its estimated defense level. The Heads Up Display immeidately bracketed the incoming boomerrang of plasma in red and an ETA marker.

[BLITZ RUSH]

Crash shifted to the side to let the attack whip by, but its slow pace immediately screamed foul in his mind. About the same time Battery screamed its own thoughts.

[DECOY! TAKE EVAISIVE ACTION!]

Crash searched his HUD for Fate's marker and looked up, finding she was now above him, arms high over her head for a killing strike. He immediately kicked himself for hesitating.

[HAKKEN SLASH!]

Fate came hurling down at him, shouting a battle cry. Crash didn't have any position advantage of his own. And no time to change momentum. No time to create a strong enough defense, or launch counter-offense. And he panicked.

"DUMP AND JUMP!"

[HOWLER FLARES!]

'POPOPOPOP! POPOPOPOP!'

Sixteen small red orbs were ejected into the air, at the same time, Crash felt the surge of energy as Battery snapped a cartridge. Fate began her swing, almost on Crash.

[MACH STRAFE!]

'THUM-BOOM!!!'

Fate was taken totally by surprise as she overswung right into empty air and flipped once before righting herself. Crash had simply appeared to fold right in on himself and vanish in a flash. The loud concussion it gave off didn't help things. However, just as she registered this fact, the small orb cloud she'd ended up in the midst of detonated in a tumult of small blinding flashes and loud bangs This of course, complicating her hearing problems once more as she grabbed her head in pain.


Cracking back into reality some five-hundred meters away and above, Crash quickly looked around to ensure he was clear as Battery discharged the spent cartridge it had used to extend the hop. He needed to change the battlefield to his advantage. Spying a little bit of whitish tan off to the southeast. He realized they had carried a considerable distance towards Sand Island. He could get some footing there, and apply more power if he didn't have to fly. Quickly turning and diving into a cloud before he could be seen, he shot away from Fate, accellerating to MACH two as he did so.


Fate shook off the disorienting effects of being caught right in the middle of that cloud of noise. It was slightly irritating to have such a perfect strike completely and totally evaided like that. She quickly scanned her surroundings, but found herself alone.

[SIR! OPPONENT FLEEING SOUTHEAST AT CONSIDERABLE VELOCITY!]

Bardiche warned her repeatedly. But the only thing Fate could really hear, was the repeated thumping of her heartbeat, and a hollow ringing sound made worse by the flares.

[SIR? SIR!? SHOULD WE NOT PERSUE THE TARGET? SIR!? AKNOWLEDGE!]

But Bardiche's urgent, and repetative inquiry however, fell upon deaf ears. Litterally.

One thing I've noticed about fate, at least in the first two seasons, is her use of a projectile decoy shot to cover her body rushes. I also noted her tendancy to retaliate from just about any angle as long as she can see the target.

Nanoha picked up fate's psychic transmission as she persued EDI at extreme high altitude.
'Roger, I'm still chasing EDI... Keep your eyes peeled.'
'Will do, I just wish I could hear better. He got me with flares.'
'You too?'
'Seems to be a popular favorite around here.'
Nanoha smiled, and then shivered.
EDI had opted to see the endurance limits of Nanoha's body, and had gone well above the marked Death Zone altitude for Mid-Childa. It was cold, and at... Raising Heart had counted off, sixty-four thousand, seven-hundred and forty-eight feet. ...the air was very thin.
In fact, EDI had checked the exact numbers. It was negetive seventy degrees Fahrenheit, and the air pressure was zero-point-eight-two-five pounds per square inch. A fractional one EIGHTEENTH that of the surface.
Luckly, Nanoha's barrier jacket kept a field of air around her body at a more comfortable pressure and temperature, but she could still feel the chill eating away at it constantly. However, despite this, she had to keep moving forward. Magical as it was, the barrier wasn't manufacturing air for her, so she had to constantly 'scoop' oxygen out of the thin air by flying through it. That wasn't too much of a problem however since EDI was flying some distance in front of her at high speed.

Even still, her breathing rate had nearly tripled from the struggle to get oxygen.

EDI was maintaining his own careful high altitude balance. Though he didn't need oxygen to function like Nanoha, he needed enough air to give his wings lift, and his magical engines thrust. And that meant more power to the engines to keep his speed up to scoop that air for thrust. It also meant his manuevability was degraded by having less action on his control surfaces.


Determined not to be shown up by the Drone Hunter, Nanoha didn't back down from the challenge. She kept pace with the craft as it banked and weaved so far above the clouds, that the sky above was twinkling with stars in broad daylight. She had noticed after a while, that EDI's turns and weaves weren't as tight as they should be...

Logging Nanoha's reduced agressive state, EDI decided to check in on his Wingman.

"What is your status BANSHEE ONE?" EDI resonated over his communications link. Sixty-thousand feet below, Crash responded in a filtered voice.
"I'm getting a better position against Lightning Unit, how about you?"
"I am currently attempting to wear down the performance of Stars Unit," the AI informed. "It would not be advantagious to continue to engage her at maximum performance levels without mission specific elements for defeating her."
"If that means tire her out first, I hear you!"

Nanoha was starting to become impatient. Her oxygen starved mind was demanding a quick end to her concious torture of itself in this low air hell. The barrier jacket was struggling to get what she needed from the air, but it was starting to reach its limits as EDI pitched up and climbed even higher, risking a stall. Nanoha was too stubborn to give up even now, and pushed further up after him.

Raising Heart took note of Blood Oxygen enrichment levels, and snapped a warning.

[MASTER, USE CAUTION]

Nanoha's hearing was still damaged from getting caught by the Iron Curtain, and she herself only heard the voice as a muffled tone.

EDI banked hard to the left, sliding excessively and coming dangerously close to a mid air stall. Nanoha reacted, bringing her staff to the front and leveling for a shot, gasping out her attack as she did so.

"Diviiiine..."

EDI detected a noticable five percent drop in her reaction time. In the time it took her to gasp for breath between words, EDI continued and calculated five-hundred seperate outcomes, narrowing them down to three courses of action by probability, and acted.

"BUSTER!!!!"

Raising Heart fired its pink beam of magical Energy. At the same moment, EDI altered the thrust vectoring of his engines and snapped his internal bay open and selected his buster, rolling sideways and swinging around rapidly as Nanoha's attack blasted past his position. This time actually stalling somewhat in the air, he used his verticle lift fan to buy the calculated time needed to lock on. And as he did so, fired the buster energy he'd gathered.

Now with her mind even more oxygen starved from firing the strenuous attack, Nanoha barely registered the incoming Orange beam for over a second. Raising Heart realized it had to act in place of its master.

[FLASH MOVE!]

Nanoha was jerked out of place as her device moved her away from the attack. EDI quickly logged that information as his stability failed and he dropped into a stall.

Now out of danger for a moment, Nanoha had time to breathe, or at least try to. Her vision was waivering and giving way to blackness on the edges as she gasped desperately for air.
Noting the Blood/Oxygen levels in its master nearing critical, Raising Heart barked a very clear, and very loud response.

[MASTER!!! WE, MUST, DESCEND!!!]

Nanoha blankly nodded between ragged gasps, and for a lack of any other functional abilities, did the only thing her mind could comprehend to go down.

She simply stopped flying, and fell.



"Scramble a rescue helicopter!" Martin barked.

"HOLD UP!" Roland followed in so fast Martin had barely closed his mouth. "Cherry?"

"She's still concious," the AI informed them from her screen. "That means she's still in the fight."

Roland put his hand on his Chin as Hayate glanced at a Vital Signs monitor that blinked up in concern. It showed Nanoha's Blood/Oxygen levels as compared to normal levels. She noted with a sigh that it was already starting to climb back up as Nanoha's descent accellerated with the help of gravity.

"You gotta' admit," Bloodberry opened fresh commentary. "That was pretty hard core right there."

"EPIC is more the word for it," Cooper interjected. "Playing King of the Hill, at the Top of the Sky."

"Well, she better get herself back in gear," Fox stated flatly. "EDI's already there."


Indeed, EDI was already well recovered from his stall, now circling Nanoha in a downward spiral. He would be sure to confirm his target was down before disengaging to assist Crash. Not given access to monitoring data at GEOFRONT, he could not confirm her conciousness level.

Nanoha herself was slowely coming back to full awareness as the air density increased with her fall. Raising Heart was counting off altitude as they dropped. She could hear the roar of EDI as he circled their position like a Shark patiently waiting to make the kill. Getting a deep lungfull of oxygen rich air again, she finally shook off the feeling of nearly passing out from suffocation. Oxygen hit her brain like one of Vita's hammerblows, and she immediately understood her position and situation.

[FIFTEEN THOUSAND FEET]

Making a note NEVER to try that stunt again, Nanoha took stock of EDI's pattern and gripped Raising Heart.

[ARE YOU OKAY, MY MASTER?]

"I'm fine, get ready..."

[I AM READY!]

Nanoha spun and took aim, charging her Axel Shooter as she halted herself in mid air. EDI detected the magical charge and the sudden velocity change and broke his spiral, gunning his engines to out pace her.

"SHOOOOOOT!"

She only got off six shots, but each and every one of them scored home against EDI's snap barrier response, shaking the MADCAP as it accellerated away at high speed. Nanoha quickly aligned herself and gave chase. The fight was far from over.

An aspect of air combat no one probably has ever thought of. Just how high can those mages fly before they can't fly any higher? Personally, I think that while barrier jackets are good for filtering the air, and controling the air around the mage, they aren't exactly space suits. And Oxygen deprivation can be an underestimated foe.

Signum seems too "perfect" to be expanded further, though as realistic as it can get, nobody could be that way. The one way that I have to change that is to introduce her silent insecurities, which is actually part of her becoming more human and less program. The justifications given in the chapter do not sound very convincing, I admit.

I recall certain days where I had been labouring on an assignment for days, and haven't sleep for more than 48 hours. The funny thing was that after handing in the assignment and getting back home, I still couldn't sleep. Imagine the kind of blunders I kept doing.

That's true. But how many other unique barrier spells have we seen other than Yuuno's own Iron Defense? (which has a healing effect? )

None other in canon, but I can bring a bunch of unique barriers and defensive spells...and I will actually be doing so with my upcoming characters. (Their spell lists are done, at least. )

• Eirwen won't be a magus, but rather like a Signum that concentrates more on special techniques (limit breaks?). And yes, she dual-wields most of the time unless she's using zweihanders like the First Tsurugi (which I plan to include, maybe ).
  
  
• Like EMIYA and Archer-ko, Eirwen will be able to trace weapons. However the catch is that she can only trace weapons. No shields, no armor, only weapons. Weyland was a all-rounder craftsmaster but his emphasis was towards weapons. Also, towards the end of his life he grew very bitter towards life (his original vision were to create weapons that could help bring an end to the Thousand Years War, but like EMIYA, was sorely disappointed by reality) and his final masterpieces were all pure tools of death. To sum things up, the initial ones were created to protect people, the ones in his mid-career to defeat them, and those towards the end, which were ironically also his best works, only to kill, regardless of friend or foe, and many of those are even capable of betraying their own masters as well (a most blood-thirsty bunch).
  
  
• Most of Eirwen's weapons come from Weyland's own designs, which are myriad, as this man created many of the stuff used during the War. A large portion are melee, and amongst these, a great many are swords. Weyland, like me, holds the sword with utmost honor and viewed it as the gist of the smith's art, and his final dream was to create a perfect sword.
  
  Unlimited Blade Works was created in such a way that, like the Tome of the Night Sky, it will unceasingly absorb new information relevant to its task, and basically Eirwen can trace whatever that has a blueprint found within it, provided it is a weapon or can be used as a weapon. This is probably why she can Trace her frying pan to smack Eliyah's (see below) head whenever he gets too mushy or excited (even though it is, strictly speaking, not a weapon in conventional terms).
  
  Aside from these, Weyland made a bow especially for her so that she won't be totally helpless against ranged opponents. I haven't got a clear idea what this bow does, but it will definitely be more than just a bow!

  Eliyah is, or was, a member of the Belkan Black Order, a group of Exorcists that may be pretty much a cross between the OFM and the Burial Agency (they were originally common people and clergy that banded together to protect themselves from rough magi and the monsters that various madmen had churned out during the Thousand Years War). This group focuses on anti-magi and counter-monster fighting, and are pretty much a band of clerical executioners (thus the OFM similarity I think). Their emblem looks something like this:
  
  
  A sidenote here, at this moment of planning, Aerith basically follows the original Belkan belief system, in which the Sankt Kaiser has no special position other than a great prophet and leader (aka no more than a great man, abeit one that's dead for a very long time), and views the Sankt Kaiser Church (that venerates the Sankt Kaiser as a idol worthy of worship) as, at best a curious spinoff, or at worst a pack of blasphemous heretics (especially in the past). Also it does not have a centralised seat of power like the Vatican, but rather is divided into many centres of learning and worship (like what you may see in Islamic and Jewish communities) spread throughout the world. Not every centre agrees with their fellows in articles of faith, law, philosophy and sometimes even the way they should sing, and heated discussions are common amongst the faithful (and the more restless).
  
  Not that the belief system frowns on such debates, in fact one core teaching in the original Belka thought is to question EVERYTHING. "Seek our G-D in all your heart, mind and soul," so they say, and debates seem to be part of this soul-searching.
