I think I might be in minority for actually liking the anime. Sure, I haven't read the manga yet -specifically because it's supposedly better - but the anime itself was the exact mix of melodrama, action, and yuri subtext I needed. Is it cliche? Is it cheesy? Is the Deus Ex Machina ridiculous? Of course it is, but that's what makes it campy fun. For what it's worth I actually did like the characters. And I'm a sucker for happy endings anyway.

Well I found a batch of this and pressed through it, but this was beyond awful. I'm actually angry after watching it; I feel like I've just been insulted.
I can't even tell who this was made for. The yuri was weak, the fanservice was half-assed, the comedy was not funny, the action/ violence was tame, the setting was dull, the mindgames were insultingly lame, the characters made no sense, and most of all the writing was atrocious. I'm truly hard-pressed to think of anything worse that I've watched recently. (And I watched all of Blade and Soul.) |

Interesting concept, poor execution.
The show really needed more episodes or less assassins (although, this option might have been problematic for the manga fans) . Just scratching the surfaces of the characters personality/motives/emotions doesn't really do it when your entire show hangs on the audience caring about them. They could have just split this into 2 seasons, would've been the better choice, IMO.

Riddle Story of Devil has a static relationship between Tokaku and Haru that's presented as something changing both of them. The only good episodes are 6, 8, and 9 for either culminating everything with enough screentime, or making sure certain characters backstories aren't overdone. The show is also plagued by impossible survival after impossible survival, and crumbles in the last two episodes in an attempt to create drama without paying a price. Ultimately the show is Shinya's hammer; sweeping and imprecise, but impossible to stop once it starts swinging because it's euphorically sadistic as fuck
