Wow.

But then it actually makes sense; I'm sure we can all agree that animes are generally more well-known than light novels. Before Index S1 aired, Index wasn't as well-known, but then Index S1 brought in a lot more attention. (which is, of course, the whole point of making an anime adaptation)

Even then, it's still uncommon for a direct sequel to sell better. While an anime series can greatly expand the readership of the source material, most sequel BD/DVDs sell only as well as the low end of the sales range from the first season (this is also why most series don't extend beyond two seasons and why budgets usually decrease accordingly....with diminishing returns, you'd expect the third series to sell only as well as the low end of the second, which in turn sold at numbers close to the low end of season 1).

After all, the demand for anime DVDs is almost exclusive to collectors. And how many would settle for gaps in their collection, especially when they have to sink in so much money per volume?

Anyway, this is just the first volume of Index II, so we'll have to see how sales hold up. Railgun probably helped the series a lot, but it remains to be seen if the new customers intend to collect the entire season or if they're just buying the first volume.

Index II vol 1 should hit 20-21k, which is 7-8k off Railgun Vol 1 but still 4-5k better than Index 1.
If by "those sales" you were referring to Railgun's, I think that should guarantee a 2nd season of Railgun, instead of Index, specially looking at the numbers you posted right after. They are superior to Index S1, but not to Railgun's.

Either way, a second season of Railgun and a third of Index would be possible looking at all the discs sales.

Index II vol 2 dvd/BD is out today right? Judging from the lack of news I'm assuming there's no bonus stuff to go along?

There is the usual bonus stuff of the light novels and information booklet that comes with each volume released in addition to the web radio CD. I just received the 2nd volume today.

Spoiler for Index II BD LE vol 2 goodies:

So... No new Index-tan until the last volume or something ?

Btw, the information booklet... Is it just terminology explainations?

Don't know if there will be a new Index-tan but looking at the release pattern for the 1st season, I guess there probably will be one for the last volume or so. The information booklet contains terminologies, information about the Roman church, character info and story summaries.

The "-tan" specials are on volumes 1 and 5 (same pattern since at least Shana I, and carried over into Index/Railgun). So the next one will be in end-May.

The blue ray sales for the first week of volume one were 12,721.
We still have yet to hear about the DVD sales.

Four thousand two hundred and sixty three.

(Because just saying "4263" would not meet the minimum required words to post)

It didn't sale 17,000 on the dot, it sold 16,574. And 11,195 isn't small.

Yeah, close to 12,000 copies int he first week definitely isn't small.

And I_Am_Kami just said that Ore no Imouto was at first place with 17,000 copies, with Index following in second place.

Glad to see the second volume selling close to the first volume. Hopefully it will keep up the momentum for the other volumes.

Those aren't toal sales in case you're misunderstanding, they're only BD numbers. Vol 2 sold 15,458 copies overall the first week. Oreimo vol 3 sold 20,959.

Sorry. Again I'm not used to those numbers as good sales. That about the number of people in my city. Or less

Well, since anime is a niche market the threshold for profitability is adjusted accordingly. An anime only needs to sale around 3000-5000 copies per volume to be profitable; not to mention merchandising and book sales, which popular anime like Index and Railgun also sale well in.
