Not sure about that... It was mentioned in one of the later stories that the founder of the Union were far older heroes, and Student doesn't feel like one of them. One chapter in V2 was about one of those elder heroes, and it was hilarious.

Chapter 14 reminds me of a game a used to play. In there the protagonist (Hero) is weaker compared to the characters that will joined the party later on the story. If it weren't for the fact that the story won't progress if the Hero isn't part of the party when you do the main quest. I would have excluded him out of the party.

Lots of game you invest in Charisma stat and skills to manage your NPCs, so your combat skills are weaker than theirs.

In some games there is a command point and it determine who and how many you can deploy.
