This one is actually is a Monster Hunter 5 right? For me playing Monhun on console seems not right since the game is designed for handlheld. I also hear that they are going to sacrifice the mission based system and the gameplay would be more open.

The public gameplay video would be up tomorrow, it would probably look like the leaked gameplay but it should quell most gameplay worries.
Here is a summary for everything else we already know confirmed: And here are the Easy Allies' (Ben And Huber) impressions of the behind-the-scenes demo:

I'd still favor my trusty old sword and shield until I get to learn the habitats and monster patterns, then switch to elemental dual blades (is the dmg formula still flat elemental damage on hit?) and hammer to break shells and stuff. I can't use GS and bow without quick charge, bowguns are more than welcome though. Glaive seems as cheap as longsword, so...eh, just a quick 10 missions with that one. Switch axe looks amazing.
P.S: After watching more of the game, I have to admit that it's very pretty, but then there's moments like 4:38 in the video above where the vines appear out of nowhere and are so huge that they block the camera for a bit. There's also the glaive jump and air-step that IMO is broken as hell, but more importantly looks forced, as if moving a ragdoll (is it just me?). Anyway, it's still early so I don't really mind anything, this game is high on my list. |

Longsword came out today as well...and it seems to remain the same cookie-cutter, newbie-friendly weapon it has been ever since the first MH, except now it has a super-slow, long-ass helm breaker attack that would be better off being called the tail-cutter.
I don't hate any of the weapons, I believe that each has its own unique playstyle and favoured marks...but the longsword could really use a counterpoint to all its benefits: good range, great damage, decent attack animations and good mobility. One may argue that there are longer weapons, or harder hitting ones, or faster ones, but it still strikes me as the one weapon that new players will flock to, oftentimes refusing to let it go. |

Given my experience from Toukiden, I'm definitely the time who prefers to be able to maintain pressure from rapid attacks so Dual Blades looks to be my first pick.
And it seems simple enough to understand. Alternatively, a range weapon like the bowgun allows me to keep all of the creature in view lol, but I don't know how complex is the ammo system.

Pressure in MH doesn't come from fast attacks - they are equally as deadly as heavy hits, if not more, but the shocking factor lies in weapons like the hammer and greatsword. That feeling of impact that comes from a charged blow landing square in the enemy's head is very unique, I'd say.
The bowgun has two versions, light and heavy. Different bowguns handle different ammo, but it's generally a very decent weapon once you get enough materials - personally, I treat it as a luxury weapon for tough marks that I'd rather not engage with a gunlance or hammer. Ranged weapons overall have an advantage over melee weapons, and not just the obvious range and accuracy:12 LV1 sleep shots are guaranteed to apply sleep once, at which point you just walp up to the monster and literally bomb it...then, switching to LV2 shells guarantees a second siesta, and when you run out of normal LV2 shells to shoot, you know pretty much how badly you've injured your quarry. Elemental ammo is also great to have and easy to acquire, and the other shell options give you the necessary versatility for any kind of enemy - tough monsters open up with bomb shells, huge beasts break up under the multiple strikes of a single pierce shot, etc. Precision in hunting can be a difficult thing to follow, especially when you've got powerful weapons, since you'll trigger a rage mode faster and enemies don't show weakness during that state. With MH world offering more than one weapon per hunt, you can always have a ranged weapon as a fallback choice for the later part of a hunt if you really want to go for a capture, but your weapon of choice is best suited for killing (and of course, tranq shells and arrows make your life super easy). You may also use it as your opening weapon for breaking parts via bombing, as described above, or if you're hunting an amphibian/underground target. God forbid the day comes when I hunt down a Plesioth without my bow... |
