You mean to say that in the past Yorito was a Yoka like Matsuri, hence why he had that dark cloth while walking to the cave.. and that's why he's so in love with the sky now, because of what he feels for Matsuri.

Yorito cannot be a Yoka/Yaka. When he was walking towards the cave his hands is free from clothing and it was clearly exposed to sunlight.

While I don't think it is the reason for what Matsuri said about Yorito, she could have been refering to the fact that Aono is several hundred years old and could not possibly have a little brother in this time.

Yay, someone else noticed it. Now I don't feel so bad. ^_^ I guess it's pretty clear what it's referring to, though I may be taking it the wrong way. I mean, does it refer to fulfilling a promise, or one getting cut short? If it's the former then I'm pretty interested where things are going for the last 4 episodes. Normally it's the kind of thing I'd expect to see in the last few episodes.

The world in the show seems to be a cross between medieval Japan and medieval Europe.. (if not earlier) Hmm.. Or.....

It be its still our world..
But, was it normal for men in Japan to wear capes?!.. or really long cloths, and in summer out of all times.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there was some anti-cristain movement in Japan, correct.. considering things like the church and so..

The is my brother isn't that strange if we were to think several hundred years ago she had some sort of brother complex, instead of a love affair. This would explain the friendliness towards Matsuri.

I should not had seen this episode while the sun was still very high in the sky. I got drowsy at the scenes involving Aono with Matsuri, but not due that they were boring but instead the voice tone for Mai Nakahara and Mamiko Noto in both Aono and Matsuri was so soothing, that my body started to fell into a deep relaxation and lethargy.

Since this would be the halfway episode, I am very glad for Aono to leave the hospital to return back to the house. Thankfully, we will get to see her background fully disclosed for the next couple of episodes ahead.

Since the very first episode, I always suspected that Aono was the same kind as Matsuri or at least something supernatural dwelling within her. But, it wasn't until this episode when her drop of blood fell onto the origami frog and was magically absorbed into it that I was fully convinced.

Exactly what could have happened hundreds of years ago...

Once I saw the first two parts of Matsuri's flashback, my guess is that Yorito back then fell in love with Matsuri, though Aono have also set her heart for him.

Aono back then committed suicide in an attempt to escape her misery of not being able to walk on the same world with Yorito.

What could had happened to Yorito back then?... Maybe he died, maybe he went missing, or maybe he gave up and went to make his own path.

I think it is the very first. He had died and likely killed by his people for befriending two Yakabits. Remember Takeshi's flashback from last episode when his younger self challenged his clan in order to protect Mayuko...?

I think the same happened to Yorito back then.

When the full flashback rolled my head was in complete dissarray to figure out how come Yorito is living in the present day sound and alive, and at first I thought he was reincarnated.
Thankfully, Matsuri gave the answer. I am sure that Matsuri fed her blood to revive Yorito in the past, just as she fed her blood to revive Aono.

Matsuri may have had resurrected Aono, because the former wished not to feel alone and for Aono to suffer a miserable fate.

I am very confused when Matsuri tries comment upon Aono's relationship with Yorito, but the latter interrupts before the former has the chance to say the real truth.

It is definitely from Matsuri's surprised observation that she knows the truth between Aono and Yorito, and that certainly for one is that the two are not related by blood.
Maybe Yorito was Aono's first love in the past, and she doesn't want to lose him to Matsuri in the present day like it happened in the past.

1. A daywalking Yaka with suppressed memories and powers locked
2. A reanimation with suppressed memories
3. A reincarnation with altered memories
4. An astral projection with missing memories

After reading all the comments here's my new theory. Yorito, Aono, and Mayuko were all once revived by Matsuri. Matsuri being around causes those three to become light sensitive Yaka's. This is why Aono was hospitalized once moving into town and the same thing is happening to Mayuko which is why Takeshi wants to kill Matsuri. Yorito is probably in process of becoming a Yaka, which is why he'll start to hate Matsuri according to Matsuri's reasoning at the beginning of the show.

I think Yorito and Aono are definitely not brothers and sister, but it somehow turns out that way. Yorito probably loses his memory at some point and Aono convinces him that she's his sister. Maybe later on we'll find out that he has amesia. Like really, where are his parents!

I don't think the church is that significant. And I don't follow how you think there's a European connection.

The church represents safety. Holy ground is generally considered a place of sanctuary. Takeshi chasing Matsuri away from that safe place forebodes the eventual meeting of Matsuri and Aono, and facing the unresolved conflict between them.

It also looked pretty cool with those high-intensity lights blazing through stained-glass windows.

Since everyone is sharing their crazy theories, I've got one that'll really twist your mind around...

17 years ago, Aono learns that Yorito has just been reincarnated. 200 years of obsessing over her lost love drives her to track-down the infant Yorito and murder his family, taking the child with her. Childhood friend of Yorito's real older sister Mayuko goes to the house and discovers the corpses ... except one of them isn't a corpse. Mayuko, despite the obviously fatal wounds, appears to be alive. That's when Takeshi sees someone fleeing the house: a woman with long, dark hair wearing a purple dress. Matsuri, who has kept an eye on Aono since she's responsible for her being "alive", revived Mayuko out of pity. Takeshi and his family eventually realize that this was the act of a yaka, and that Mayuko is now cursed. They were going to kill her right away, but Takeshi vows to find Matsuri so Mayuko's curse can be lifted, and also to avenge the murder of her parents. (He doesn't know about Aono, of course.) Aono, meanwhile, has raised Yorito while occasionally moving to another town or manipulating someone's memories to avoid suspicion. Matsuri would try to follow her, but until now was always too far behind.

What did Yorito discover that would allow Matsuri to walk in daylight? The title of this episode is "Blood Sacrifice", which means someone had to die. We saw Aono cut her own throat, but what she said indicates that Yorito had already died. The sacrifice that had to be made is for a mortal who loves a yaka to die. When he is reincarnated, his soul must lead him to the yaka again. If they reunite and he remembers his promise from the previous life, the yaka's soul will be purified and she will become human. (I haven't been reading the spoilers for future episodes, so I don't know what the speculation about episode 9 is.)

Aono wants Yorito to remember her so she'll become mortal again. Matsuri isn't that selfish and hasn't thought about Yorito in a long time. So even if she remembers what Yorito looked like in the past, she might not have recognized him right away. After a couple hundred years, you're likely to see a lot of people who bear a resemblance to someone else. Then she heard his name and remembered, but didn't think it was really him until she heard Aono's name. It may even be that she doesn't know about how becoming human.

... I haven't gotten as far as what's going to happen in the future.

Honestly, that doesn't really sound all that insane. You've actually got something of a complete picture going there.

Plot aside for a second though, I'm more interested in the thematic side of things for this episode. Particularly the details on what makes a yaka a yaka. From what I gather they're pretty much humans that have been immersed in dark emotions. Immersed in it so much that it's pretty much integral to their being. Originally, I was assuming the whole "sunlight burns" thing to be typical undead creature cliche, but now, probably not. Whereas the darkness represents negative emotions, the light represents all the positive ones. And they can't exactly just switch sides either, being their stuck in something of an endless cycle where all they can do is fear their prospective loss of happy things and bask in their own loneliness (something this episode got across quite well I think). Thus positive things, like the sky for instance, are portrayed as objects of desire that inevitably cause pain.

Basically, it seems (at least on some level) that the issue can be traced to the mental states of the characters in question. Which brings me to the issue of a potential "cure" for the condition. Rather than some magic remedy, I'm kinda expecting something like a proverbial "pulled out of the darkness". And with Yorito being the center of attention, both in the past and present, he could very well end up being the one doing the pulling. And before anyone bites my head off, yes I'm aware that sounds like typical visual novel staple that some of us aren't so fond of, but I digress. Also some poster's speculation of a possible love triangle would complicate this idea further as, obviously, it's rather difficult to perpetuate a "feel good" situation for all parties when it comes to such things.

Anyways, just my ramblings.

Oh, and also, Ascaloth was saying that Mayuko might not have the whole sun problem. If my previous speculation is somewhat accurate then that really makes a lot of sense to me. If she's only half-yaka, to the extent that her growth has been halted while not frying in the sun, one could attribute it to her unique situation perhaps. She was obviously fairly young when she was turned, which would indicate a childlike innocence of sorts. She's also not really suffering from that feeling of loneliness that plagues the others, being she's had Takeshi with her all this time. So her affinity with the darkness could be low enough where the sun doesn't effect her.

...or maybe he really did haul her around in that box. ^^;;

10/10? I dunno. I gave last episode a 10, but honestly every episode gets better and I find myself in a rare position of eagerly awaiting every new episode. It's nice to see some new faces around here though, seems interest is starting to pick up.

Okay, how about this... Mayuko is actually an android. Aono is Matsuri's daughter. Takeshi is Yorito's father. And Mana is an undercover agent for a government organization trying to learn the secret of yakas. Koyori is her genetically-engineered esper sidekick.

I haven't ranked any of sola a 10 yet. It's early and I haven't been really shocked yet. Hopefully, I'm not over-anticipating, but it seems to me that the real heart of the story is still ahead.

And there's enough technical problems I can nit-pick on that prevent me from calling this "perfect". It's a shame really, because there are just as many details I can point to as being excellent.
