Subaru seems quite curious about shadow magic. Well, regardless even if Subaru trained hard as mule I doubt he would stand even slightly higher chance against such as Rem or Elsa. Looking for way to avoid whole thing from all might sound like lot of better tactic to me.

Jesus Christ they did it, they fuc***g did it!
Every single minute of this episode was glorious, now we saw how Rem lost her horn and why she's literally suffering thanks to that while Rem is the one able to protect her. Subaru is the man, facing the giant dog all by himself to save Rem at all cost (OP in the background was epic) and then suddenly Roswaal got into the scene to save the day, I wonder how big is his power considering he wiped out the beast easily. And to end the best part, Rem being the best girl of the series.

. Like, i have seen people throwing heavy balls at high distances but i never saw such feat with a person instead. Not even in wrestling shows. That's why i asked if Subaru being able to access mana and stuff, made him somehow stronger than a normal human for his size. He was also able to lift a giant club like it was nothing and easily knocked out those thugs in the first arc to a point he though super strengh was his power. It may be just for the cool effect and i'm fine with that but since this anime gives great importance to little details i think it's a legit question.
