Onmyōji Anime (Netflix)

Quote:
The Netflix Tudum Japan livestream event on Sunday revealed that Baku Yumemakura's Onmyōji novels are getting their first anime series adaptation. The anime will premiere worldwide on Netflix in 2023.

Soubi Yamamoto (Meganebu!, This Boy/Kono Danshi series) is directing the anime, and Natsu Hashimoto (Oshiete Hokusai!: The Animation) and Yuiko Katō (Agū: Tensai Ningyō) are writing the scripts. Marvy Jack is producing the anime.

Yumemakura first wrote the franchise as a series of short stories starting in 1986. He then wrote three full-length novels for the franchise, in 2000-2008. The book series also includes several picture books.

The stories take place in a fictional version of Japan's Heian period, and center on the real-life onmyōji Abe no Seimei.

Huh.... guess I should keep my expectations to the absolute minimum? What's the quality of the story like?

I think the only way ANN forum posts should ever enter into this sort of discussion is "whatever they say, assume the opposite".

Yumemakura Baku is considered a very fine novelist. No reason to assume this won't reflect that.

Well the primary concern that was mentioned was pertaining to the quality of the animation, citing the studio also did the Junji Ito anime. And although I have not watched it myself, a quick scavenging of the internet shows a lot of terrible animation scenes, hence compelling me to ask about the quality of the story. That's more important in these kinds of works for me.

The anime is similar to the manga, and there is difference. The atmosphere of manga feels like Japanese horror film, and the atmosphere of anime feels like Japanese historical drama. The plot has some differences.

Abe no Seimei is an important historical figure. Casting him in the role of yet another supernatural detective misses all of that. Where's the science? Onmyouji were studying the heavens while Europe languished in the "Dark Ages."
