This doesn't surprise me. If you go on Hoyolab, it was packed with complaints from people who couldn't beat the boss (some saying they tried for hours, 20+ attempts, etc.). I do think the mechanic actually wasn't that bad, but I guess some players won't have characters built that are well-suited to this, and the punishment was a bit harsh. Plus, it probably would have been a bit safer to introduce the mechanic with another enemy/encounter sooner so people can get used to it.

Spoiler for 2.1 Original Boss Mechanic - not sure how it changed now:

Failing the gamble resulted in a debuff + then severe damage + the character is imprisoned + an immediate AoE follow-up attack. For non-tanky characters, it could take you from full health to around 30% health in one round, and there's only one more turn until the same thing happens again.
So you either needed to a) have most of your characters not fail the roll (AoE skills or ults), b) have very good shields to mitigate anyone who failed, or c) have a very good healer. Ideally all three. Because the character who failed got imprisoned, if it's a healer who uses their ult for party heals, that would end up being locked, so you couldn't intercept to heal up before the immediate follow-up. So yeah, for a story boss, it was a bit harsh (though I'd still maintain not unfair - it's more like a puzzle where you need to thing strategically with your team comp; if you could beat the mechanic, it was otherwise very easy).

I'm curious how they changed it, but I assume that either eliminating the debuff or lowering the damage would be enough.

Moreover, I do think MHY should really make up their mind when it comes to the concept of "death" for characters. Tingyun status left in the open is already one thing, Firefly and Robin "fakeouts" as well, but then, double dipping with Aventurine makes me wonder if there will be any reason to care when they pull the same shenanigans, especially when the game tries very hard to show characters being shaken by such news whereas it is actually no big deal, which cheapen quite severely the whole ordeal as result.

Yeah, I figured you might say this, and I'm actually surprised I haven't seen this complaint more often yet. Perhaps people haven't yet realized (although I think it's obvious?) that none of the deaths were real. Obviously, this is all in a dreamworld, but it is kind of become a playground for them where they can play with "death" as if it doesn't matter, but it does remove a lot of tension, even though they still play it up for shock value. (See, for instance, Sunday's "death" at the very end. They basically get to have their cake and eat it too with this artistically-framed slick death scene after revealing a key culprit -- I love the closing of the lighter followed by the slice, very cool -- but surely people should understand by now that this just means he too is now headed to the "other side." Aventurine gets this big almost eulogy by the story for all he has to go through to willingly take the gamble that could kill him, Sunday just gets a quick slice, but both will end up in the same place, where we will no doubt be headed next patch thanks to Acheron slicing the path open and Sam rescuing us.

Once we move onto future arcs, people are going to now always be skeptical if any death is real; as you alluded to, I'm still not even convinced about Tingyun.

That said, even with all this, I think the remaining mysteries are still fairly interesting, so I can sort of set it aside as just the pathway to go deeper into the mystery. And to me, really, the clues about death not being real were so obvious from the get-go that the death here was just an illusion/trick to create tension. I guess I'd feel worse about it if they didn't make it so obvious (although, sure enough, some people are still fooled!).

Hopefully at least they flesh out the epilogue more this time because this plot has a lot more loose ends given all the different factions involved. I guess I'm anticipating that next patch we'll resolve the main mystery and face the final boss, and 2.3 should be resolving the loose ends with all the factions and "where do we go from here" denouement. All in all, I do think they've improved the pacing a fair bit since the Luofu arc.

which new boss got nerfed? Curious on this, as I did not really encounter any boss particularly hard in Penacony.

the "hardest" thing I encountered is the powered up dinosaur guarding treasure on top of the buildings while I escorted Firefly to her hideout. lol

The final story boss of the 2.1 Trailblaze quest. I don't want to spoil who it is, but the mechanics are unique to this particular boss, and that's why a lot of people were unprepared.

IIRC standard Hoyo story cycle ends the main story of the main patch during x.3 so expect the entire thing to resolve in May.

I see... well, have not yet reached that boss. And probably won't be fighting it for a few more days. I'm using the two day holy week break to finish the Alchemical Ascension in Genshin which is about to end.

I think they mentioned on one of streams that story will end on 2.3. Story is looking more complicated than Luofu one so hopefully it will not be just epilogue there...

Anyway, my plan was save all for Sam and get Acheron on rerun (like Blade... that is still waiting) but Acheron animations and unique teams looked so fun that I wished for her already. For now she got Good Night and Sleep Well 4* LC but maybe I will get her dedicated LC on rerun. For now it seems it's not really needed. Yeah, other options loose some damage and it takes a little longer to charge ultimate but IMO it's not that necessary as people say.

got to make some tough decisions again. Will be content to have Acheron's signature light cone in just one server.. in other two servers, will settle for GNSW or some other reasonable substitute.
need to conserve resources, since Robin is saying hi in the not so distant future.

the other minor problem is.. Good Night and Sleep Well is being used by Guinaifen. Have to think of a cone for little Gui to use if I take GNSW from her.

If you gonna run her with Acheron Resolution seems like clear f2p choice.

yeah, Resolution is another decent option for Gui. But I need to pull more of it. The superimpose of the Resolution cones in my inventory are low, only 1 or two.

anyway, on to a bit more serious stuff. Has anyone here tested Passing Shore (Acheron's signature light cone) vs. GNSW? I saw Sevyplay's guide on youtube testing it out with Acheron's ultimate hitting 4 enemies.. and the damage difference is huge. Passing Shore hit 4 enemies = 761k, GNSW = 664k, Welt LC = 600k, Fermata = 579k. With Fermata being the worst.

has anyone here tested? Would be nice to even just Passing Shore vs GNSW, using same team, and against same enemy. So we could have some more data.

My current team is Acheron, Black Swam, HouHou, and Fu Xuan. Not the beast for using Acheron to her destructive potential but it does an insane amount of damage with her light cone.
