Ao Haru Ride

Ao Haru Ride by Sakisaka Io

Yoshioka Futaba has a few reasons why she wants to "reset" her image & life as a new high school student. Because she's cute, she was ostracized by her female friends in junior high, and because of a misunderstanding, she couldn't get her feeling across to the one boy she has ever liked, Tanaka-kun.

Now in high school, she is determined to be as unladylike as possible so that her friends won't be jealous of her. While living her life this way contentedly, she meets Tanaka-kun again, but he now goes under the name of Mabuchi Kou. He tells her that he felt the same way as she did when they were younger, but now things can never be the same again. Will Futaba be able to continue her love that never even started from three years ago?

(From MAL from Baka Updates)

There's 5 volumes out right now and is surprisingly selling like hotcakes (Vol 2 ranked first in its first week; something rarely many shoujo can do these days).

All the chapters til the current one is pretty much translated too (19 chapters).

It's honestly the best new shoujo manga out there since sliced bread. It's definitely fresh and devoid of the usual shoujo hijinxes so far.

Ooh, a new thread.

Sakisaka Io writes what is essentially your usual shoujo manga, but, she does it better than everybody else.

She knows how to draw out the sweet moments, heighten the dramatic tension, let fly the sparkles, and also when to ratchet down and avoid turning her works into cheap melodrama or to rely on bitchiness to carry her plots. Her art is clear and pretty, and she doesn't go lazy on it.

Aoharaido is her best work yet. The heroine is lovely and earnest, the secondary love interest is adorable, and the rest of the cast are deliciously lacking in malice, even when they're competing over love. The male lead, well, despite being slightly tsundere he's actually attentive and sweet, but he has his own issues to deal with and even seems to be vaguely aware of the way the mangaka keeps trolling his romantic advances with interruptions and complained about it.

That said, I'm not fond of the new rival girl. I'm sure it'll be satisfactorily resolved eventually but, mmm.

ANN reports that VIZ has picked up this series for release in English translation. Viz Licenses Dragon Ball's Yamcha Spinoff, Ao Haru Ride, Radiant Manga, More.

Good news. Really like "Strobe Edge" -liked right from the start- and enjoyed "Aoharu Ride" quite a bit as well. "Sono omokage wo shitteru" - from the Betsuma anniversary issue - one of my favourite one-shots. Curious what Viz'll do with the latter two in English translation. And what about the "Strobe Edge" special also incorporated? Orphaned?

Is Sakisaka's, ongoing, "Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare" only available in Japanese, Italian and French, so far, btw?
