String from the Heavens and Inside the Cage are two of my top favorites as well.

I especially love the analogy of the stars still being there even though we can't see them with the girl's predicament in String from the Heavens. That scene and the ending always makes me tear up.

And Inside the Cage is just so heartbreaking

I am not sure if they ever specifically say but I think it is supposed to take place around the Edo period.

There are hints that time doesn't apply to Ginko in a normal way - he wears basically modern clothes and smokes cigarettes, yet clearly most of his encounters take place some time in an undefined past. And not necessarily the same era in the past every time, either.

If there's ever going to be an official explanation for that, I'm guessing it'd involve immortality and/or the uro-san.

There's probably not an answer for it at all --- like the reply we got asking why Ginko's the only person to wear modern clothes.

There was an interesting theory I heard once about the Mushi passageways he sometimes uses could somehow have tunnels that lead through time. Again though we will never be sure unless their is somekind of official confirmation. I think its better being left open for interpretation though.

I actually read (and I forget where) that Ginko wears more modern clothes because originally the manga-ka had planned to set the story in the modern era but I guess this changed as she developed the story but she must have liked the modern clothing style for Ginko so she kept it.

edit: Also according to the manga-ka Ginko is in his late twenties. This is said in volume 5 of the manga.

edit 2: I found the thing about the time period this is from volume 1 of the manga and also stated by the Yuki Urushibara

"Regarding the time period Ginko is living in: I drew chapter 4 intending to set it in modern times but the other stories aren't set in any particular time. Japan is still in a time of isolation maybe? or it feels like an age set between the Edo and Meiji periods. That's the image I get anyways."

Anyways chapter 4, "Light in the Eyelids" (second episode in the anime) is actually the 1st story she wrote for Mushi-shi. She submitted it for a contest and it won and thus we got this wonderful series.

I finished watching this series a few hours ago. Most of the episodes were great and amazing. I understand there's a manga, so I'll read it when I can.

The manga's the source material. Definitely worth checking out.

One of the truest anime adaptations ever, IMO - it really captures the spirit of the manga beautifully.

The Mushishi soundtrack is may be my favorite soundtrack from any show. Well besides House.

Each song fits perfectly and really sets the modd for each and every episode. Even there very haunting melodies can be very relaxing.

I'm still surprised Toshiro Masuda was the composer though. When Ri (Kotowari) played, I couldn't pinpoint this awful familiarity with another piece I heard until I noticed he was the same one who composed Sadness and Sorrow from Naruto.

Since I was interestedin a Mushishi artbook, I googled, and found this (yup, fell back on animesuki)

I am afraid it won't be easy to get. There seems to be another artbook (for the anime) available on ebay though.

There are a few mushishi artbooks being sold on ebay. Most of them are somewhat pricey however.
