Trump Cries “Unfair” When Judge Tosses Lawsuit Against NYT Editor

We’ll admit we haven’t read TrumpNation, a New York Times editor’s 2005 book about “the Donald.” But now we’re thinking about it.

The book drove the Donald bananas. That’s because the author, Timothy O’Brien, cited three anonymous sources as saying he was worth between $150 million and $250 million, contrary to his own claim that he was a billionaire. Trump sued for defamation, saying the book cost him future deals.

On Wednesday, Camden County superior court judge Michele Fox ruled that the famed real-estate personality was not a victim of malice. Here are stories from WSJ and NYT. (The judge made an oral ruling; the transcript isn’t available yet.)

In a statement, Mr. O’Brien said, “I am deeply gratified that the court’s decision has vindicated the reporting in TrumpNation.”

Mr. Trump said he will appeal. “It tells you how unfair the libel laws are,” Mr. Trump said. “We proved our case 100 percent….Unfortunately, the court’s decision today condones the gross negligence, and lack of professionalism and bias on the part of a reporter.”

Unless the sperm is somemkind of supersperm. Then maybe it's possible. All it has to do is, upon ejaculation, survives for several days in a bacteria infested, extreme temperature water, filled with chlorine. Then it has to find its way to the girl, attempt to find a way to bypass the layer of bikini covering her tube, find a way in, survive the various antibodies that her body sent to squelch the life out of this sperm (or sperms), find one of the ovarian egg, timed it correctly so that it occurs before her period, and fertilize the egg.

Far more likely she just had fun with the pool kid while mommy and daddy were off somewhere.

The U.S. Department of Defense is considering fielding an army of remote-controlled insect-cyborg scouts.
The Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (HI-MEMS) program is the responsibility of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is soliciting research proposals on the technology.
The insects would be outfitted with sensors and a wireless transmitter designed to enable them to send data on conditions in places inaccessible to human troops. The goal of the program is to produce a sensor-enabled insect with a 100-yard range that could be placed within five meters of a target using electronic remote control and, potentially, Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies.

Actually, since religion is merely the ritualised form of practising a faith, I don't see why it's necessarily wrong to adapt it to the needs of the time. Let's not forget that religion is not static and few, if any, are likely to resemble their original forms.

Take Buddhism, for example, which was originally an Indian religion that was sinicised after it arrived to China, taking on features of Taoism in the process. The religion underwent further transformation after arriving to Japan and, in my opinion, became closer to its original form (at least, that's how I think about Zen Buddhism).

Even monotheistic faiths like Christianity and Islam splintered into various denominations over time because of disagreements over the interpretations of sacred texts.

So, if anime or manga helps to draw more people, particularly children or young adults, to a religion, that's probably a good thing. It's part and parcel of a natural process of making religious faith more relevant to changing social norms. The only concern, I guess, is that we may end up trivialising the faith, but then it's worth asking why we'd think that way. After all, anime is not just for kids, right?

Fukui / Jellyfish collagen eyed for cosmetics, drugs

A type of jellyfish usually considered a nuisance may become useful in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical fields due to a new technique that extracts collagen from the creature.

In a process developed by Fukui Prefectural University and other institutions, collagen has been extracted from mizukurage, or moon jellyfish. But the technology can be applied to other jellyfish species such as the infamous Nomura's jellyfish, also known as Echizen jellyfish, according to the institutions.

Collagen, a kind of protein, is used for making products in a variety of fields as the substance is believed to have moisturizing properties and other effects. Normally, collagen is extracted from the skin of fish or pigs.

Moon jellyfish have a diameter of between 15 to 30 centimeters. In summer, the jellyfish proliferate in swimming areas near beaches.

The Japan Atomic Power Co., based in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, operator of nuclear power plants in Ibaraki and Fukui prefectures, has experienced difficulties in disposing of the jellyfish massing around water intake openings for the plants, which need seawater to cool their equipment.

The company asked Reiji Yoshinaka, professor emeritus at the university, Yoshihiro Yokoyama, professor at the university, and others to conduct research on possible ways to deal with the jellyfish in 2003.

According to Shoshi Mizuta, an associate professor at the university and a member of the research team, the jellyfish decomposes when kept at low temperatures for a certain period of time.

The researchers found that several enzymes played a role in inducing this phenomenon when the water temperature dropped to around 4 C.

Collagen fibers, which are in the jellyfish's body structure, were successfully isolated and purified from the liquefied jellyfish.

According to the team, 1 kilogram of the jellyfish contains 1 gram of collagen, and has less odor compared to collagen extracted from pigs or fish.

Until around 2005, the team came close but fell short of successfully extracting jellyfish collagen. Technoble Co., a Nishi Ward, Osaka-based cosmetics material supplier, took note of the team's earlier research results and conducted its own experiments to develop the technology with the team's approval. Since then, the firm has built a facility to produce large quantifies of collagen of high purity.

"We're very happy that our research to make use of the troublesome jellyfish led to a good result. We hope the technology will be commercialized soon," Mizuta said.

Although it seems that expensive collagen actually came from human donor cadavers, placentas, and aborted fetuses. I certainly hope that those greedy scientists won't be using human collagen for the mere purpose of comestics. Hopefully, these jellyfishes will become very popular and replace it as the most expensive collagen. Nonetheless, it is a good thing that the usual collagen for cosmetics is extracted from fruits, vegetables, and seafood though.

Boy inventor patents cat repeller

TOYAMA--A 14-year-old boy from Toyama has obtained a patent for a cat-repelling device he invented using common items such as plastic bottles and mikan orange juice.

Ryota Yamamoto, a third-year student at Municipal Shibazono Middle School in Toyama, recently received certification for his invention from a local patent office in the city.

The contraption makes use of PET bottles--whose reflection cats dislike--and the tart smell of mikans, which felines are believed to find disagreeable.

When a cat steps on the device's 20-centimeter by 30-centimeter stand, the animal's weight pushes the stand down and triggers a switch that turns on the motor that drives a 20-centimeter-diameter propeller made of PET bottles.

At the same time, the mechanism pulls a cord that tips a film case holding mikan juice, dripping it onto the propeller. The propeller wafts the smell of the mikan juice, driving cats away.

Yamamoto named the device "Runyaway 2," a play on the words "runaway" and "nya"--the Japanese onomatopoeic word for meow.

Yamamoto, a cat lover and owner, was inspired to invent the gadget after a stray cat ripped a mosquito screen door at his home.

"I wondered if I could invent something to drive cats away without hurting them," he said.

His concern about the welfare of cats prompted him to ensure the propeller rotated slowly.

Yamamoto has a history of having his inventions patented. He obtained a patent while a sixth-grader at primary school for a contraption that helps prevent people from forgeting umbrellas. That device used a sensor to detect people's movement and automatically open their umbrellas.

About his latest patent, Yamamoto said: "I've invented something that's kind to both cats and people. I hope to continue inventing things that can make a lot of people smile."
