In SAO's case it was mostly because it didn't happen in the real world

I started the English Translation of the light novel and I have to say I like it much better than the anime. I was surprised that the book name dropped Misaka Mikoto, Imagine Breaker and A certain magical index. In the 7th episode of the anime they do not mention them, but put out obvious hints. Shooting a coin at high speed and nullifying all powers. Nayu is so much more fun in the book. I saw the other reference to Haganai, Oregairu, Oreimo and Gundam
