Yeah....like I said, they could've made it more for a general audience who aren't familar with the game. Most of the reviews I've read are either 'EWWW FUJOSHIT LOLNOPE' or 'WHO THE FUCK ARE THESE GUYS?'

For me, I enjoyed the first episode quite a bit. It made me laugh numerous times and I feel like Doga Kobo actually gets the fandom, and what many of us probably picture our swords doing while we're away.

Sending an oodachi to an indoors fight at night, what are you crazy! Ishikirimaru was adorable though, my favorite oodachi.

Poor, poor Ishipapa getting poked by tantou while getting his sword stuck

And Hasebe freaking out about not being captain was funny too.

I'm guessing since they failed this time in the Ikeda incident, next time is probably when they'll bring in Hijikata's and Kondo's swords.

Sounds like this is the trend of the season.

yeah i noticed that, this season is the "cute girls otaku season", the last one was more the pretty boys season with a lot of bishounen and some fujoshi, now we have "the power of "cuteness" all over the place some animes about cute peoples(both male and female) doing cute girls things.

I'd rather see cute guys doing cute things though than another male pop idol anime. That's starting to be played out.

Or more parody series like Binan.

I think this is why they're funding two different anime by different studios known for different types of works. Doga Kobo gets to do the fun fluffy anime with all the game references that are sure to make most players happy. While ufotable will get to do the more serious anime that'll probably have little to no game mechanic references that'll be more non-player friendly and also make the fans happy. I mean we get two animes for one game. Win win for everyone.

Shit, I ain't complaining

I'll even buy the ufotable one even though it'll probably be Aniplex that puts it out and probably about 500 dollars.

the disappearance of the Player Character irks me once again

why was iM@S able to make two fantastic player character avatars, yet no other similar series were able to do so?

I'm not a gamer. But tasty fan art about the game has shown up in my Twitter feed for several months. I'm looking forward to learning more about this.

My one complaint about the first episode is that they threw too many names at me. I didn't catch a single one of them.

I watched the first episode almost blind (only read the synopsis) and what I got from it is a “male version of Kancolle”. Basically human(oid) manifestations of war-tools doing SoL things and occasionally battling zombie-like foes. And I also feel that this series is more for the hardcore fans of the game or those who are legit Japanese history fans who know all about the famous samurais and their swords’ names. Unfortunately, I have to drop this. I have experienced Kancolle anime in full and cannot say that it was a pleasant experience, but at least that one has girls cruising oceans with their weird getups doing "naval battles" with some good explosions which amused me to some degree. Here, we have swords as samurais doing usual samurai-things without a good and strong story that involves both the opposing sides (because one side is practically made of zombies). Just sword-samurais slaying zombie-samurais in between their SoL moments. Not to mention that a number of these guys are so effeminate that they look and act like actual girls. I mean, painting your nails and fixing your male-buddy’s hair by putting a flower hairpin on it to make it look cuter? Really?? Is this the kind of behavior and interaction that female anime-fans like from male anime-characters? Yeah, no. I’m outta here.

There's actually more traditional manlier characters that from the looks of the OP, are appearing eventually. Also, I wouldn't call Mitsutada(eyepatch) or even Hasebe(whiny kissass) 'feminine.'

the MC isn't feminine either; the other MC's whole motivation for putting the barette into his hair is 'I must look good so master can love me more.'

if this is not enough to make someone "look girlish" then, omg, the shotas too and the guy making his fingernail, omg this anime screamed "fujoshi material all over the place" and even if the "owner is not gay or girlish don't means which the others can't be and "Want too much love from they manly master".

Eh, that doesn't really invalidate my point though. I said "a number of these guys are so effeminate that they look and act like actual girls" not all of them, while you only mentioned the other numbers who do look manlier. But my point still stands that a good number of them have pretty appearances and "soft" personalities which are indistinguishable from girls.

I don't know about your femininity-standard (btw, are you a girl?), but the MC okaying his partner to do what he did to his hair and act like it's a normal thing already makes him hella feminine to me. I'm an asian guy, so I don't have western macho-standard and I'm more flexible about men's femininity (eg. I still think Kenshin Himura and Kurama as legit dudes despite having women's voices and soft manners). But this anime is pushing the femininity of a number of the male characters a bit too far, and judging from the reaction of some other novice watchers, I think I'm not the only who is weirded out by this element (among other things).

The bolded word that I added is a better description of what is happening in that episode IMO. And yes, that is weird enough to turn some audience off (most of them are male audience, I assume).

Oh... So this is the male version of cute girls doing cute things anime... Both are repulsive

The artworks are misleading... I thought some of them are girls...

Sigh... What a waste of bandwidth...

I guess this is for the game fans, since I never fell involved in the "plot" or the characters. I was looking forward to it without knowing anything about it because I thought it was something shinsengumi themed but I guess it is not what I was looking for

You might want to look forward to the upcoming Peacemaker Kurogane adaptation by White Fox for a more legit Shinsengumi-anime .

I say this as a fan, but it's probably more for the game fans. I guess? That's actually my main complaint is that they needed to write this more for people who aren't familar with the game at all.

If this was all girls though, y'all would hail this as series of the fucking year. Don't even deny it. And there's far more gayer shows out there than this show.

WTF is wrong with people this season? It's like this show and the ice skating show have just unleashed all this hatred...

Hail this series as AOTY if the cast are girls? Hell no! Not a chance in hell. Judging from the first episode and the premise from the synopsis so far, this series is as boring and unengaging as Kancolle to me. And I already expressed my disdain for Kancolle anime in my previous post above. So, I would treat Hanamaru the same way as Kancolle if the cast are all girls. Maybe even lower than Kancolle since this one doesn't have as much spectacle.

So far, I really like Yuri on Ice because it is overall well-executed, has interesting premise and theme of serious/pro ice-skating sport, loveably-relatable characters and it's newbie-friendly. Oh, and the male-characters in YoI don't look and act like girls (so far). Flamboyant maybe, but not girly.
