Font update = Critical update ?!

Just now windows asked me if I wanted to install a critical update.

Since when did a font update become critical?!

It's just another POS that they want to dump on you computer. Sometimes 98% of the time I think they're morons...this proves it. Ughh...you use the automatic updater....that thing's annoying as hell.

Its a security update. There is a vulnerabilty in the font system which can expose your computer.

I install font security updates on Linux all the time.

"The font has been found to contain unacceptable symbols"!?!

Is there a middle finger in there or something?

Anyway, Dopeskills is probably right.

excuse my ignorance, but how does someone (microsoft) fuck up a font so it can be exploited?

The font contains a swastika, which is used to indicate a Japanese Buddhist shrine. IT IS EXTREMELY URGENT THAT WE REMOVE ALL SWASTIKAS FROM OUR FONTS IMMEDIATELY!

Microsoft seriously needs to invest alot more time and money into actually debugging their operating systems before they release them. Looking in my Add/Remove Utility, I have 71 WinXP Hotfixes and 12 Updates. There are twice as many Hotfixes as I have programs installed on this PC. It's obscene...

No, I bet its a booby symboly. Don't want those kids to see the boobies otherwise M$ could be sued for millions by parents. (On that note, can I legally sue them for being fucking idiots?)

It's facing the wrong way. It is indeed a Nazi swastika. (How...odd...I would expect that somebody's gonna lose their job for this one.)

Wasn't there a group of symbols that if you took them side to side with symbol or something like that it did something really mean?

Turns the words Bill Gates owns Microsoft sideways and adjust some letters.

I come to 30 mins later wanting to buy XP for some odd reason

I was thinking of something true : if you stick some words together (can't remember exactly which ones) with wingdings character you see something... really strange.

I remember one that if you typed something like 9-11 or similar it appeared two buildings, a plane and a bomb, I thought it was very silly. Seems more like a flaw in the font's system, Im with hobbobagins on this, how can someone exploite a flaw like that? Can you get hacked 'cause some hole in the font system?

That was what I was thinking about : it was really very very strange if you look at which letters you use...
Edit : Just looked through Google and if you type 'Q33 NYC' then switch to 'Wingdings' you get it! I remember receaving an email about this, I was quite stupefied...

I personally see nothing wrong with updating a font to remove unacceptable symbols, but to label such an update as "critical" is insane. I kinda wish I didn't install that now. I wanna see the "unacceptable symbols"

Actually, i just did the "Q33 NYC" thing. It's pretty stupid but, I'm sure that's why they did it.

Although im no fan of MC saying they should make all their programs unhackable form the get go is insane since they cant predict all the new programs that will be developed.

2 put it in terms im sure your familiar with
Someone release their new CD but you cant rip its because of security on it.
A new program is released and allows you 2 rip the contents.
A new type of security is developed and put on their next CD
