Also doubt we're going to get an war or even armed conflict between China and Vietnam over the sea dispute. China can just bring economic pressure on Vietnam if China wants some ego, which it is somewhat currently doing by taking back its citizens and investors.

Besides, I thought the Vietnam government officials actively prevented a mass anti-Chinese demonstration on Sunday? Is that a sign of them trying to back down and placate China, or rather because they are in general averse towards any public gatherings?

Earlier they allowed some protests, supposedly peaceful, but then it went out of hand and turned into full-on rioting.

Of late and feeling they're in the same boat, with Putin set to visit China around this month, I'm sure Vietnam will be one of several on the agenda, and it could affect future military equipment acquisitions from Russia.

As mentioned earlier, economic pressure from China would means nothing to Vietnam, as there is lack of FDI going both way, and the trade mostly was only on raw resources. China would also get in trouble with WTO in that situation, and will just provide more bullets to US and the West to put economical restriction toward themselves.

In fact an economical sanction may even benefit Vietnam as they can now have a reason to crackdown cheap Chinese goods and service without negative response from other nations

Based on what i see, it seems the Vietnam government actually was trying to keep the public on their side rather than any sign of back down toward China. As that whole incident with looting foreign company did provide negative view on general public, means keep control over demonstration right now do provide positive public opinion

To put it simply, protest and rioting under the eyes of Vietnamese government is just one hair away. Before this, protest to China is not illegal, but rarely to be broadcasted on the state-controlled media. However, this time they do, which is a stepping stone about our willingness.

Plus, public opinion is also an important matter. That is why we still haven't sent any warship, despite that two or three fishermen have been beaten by Chinese officials this week, while their tools were confiscated. Even when they were fishing on their tradition area, meaning hundred of years. You guys just don't know how poor fishermen are in Vietnam.

Beside, stealing from anyone is criminal activity and must be punished. If not, everything would had got worse.

Book explains why the Iranian mastermind of the 1983 U.S. Embassy bombing in Beruit is
currently living in the U.S.:

"In a new book out today titled “The Good Spy: The Life and Death of Robert Ames,” Pulitzer Prize-winning
biographer Kai Bird tells the story of Ames, a CIA officer who rose to CIA station chief in Lebanon, and was
the CIA’s chief analyst in the Middle East. Ames was killed during the April 1983 suicide bombing attack on
the U.S. Embassy in Beruit, an attack in which 63 people were killed, including 17 Americans.

Among other revelations in the book, one making waves is particularly startling: the Iranian mastermind of
the 1983 U.S. Embassy bombing in Beruit, along with other attacks that killed hundreds of Americans like
Ames, defected to the U.S. in 2007 and provided intelligence to the CIA. Asgari was subsequently granted
political asylum and has remained in the U.S., likely under CIA protection, ever since."

But now Mrs. McKendry, 56, the eldest daughter in the family, says she is no longer afraid to speak up. Out of the house when her mother’s abductors came, she says she was told their names by her siblings immediately afterward. She says she gave those names to the police in March, after she became convinced that they were serious about investigating the murder. She has also filed a civil suit against Sinn Fein.
“If they want to put a bullet in my head, well, they know where I live,” she said in an interview at her home outside Belfast.
In this city where walls up to 45 feet tall still separate Catholics from Protestants, a very different kind of wall has sprouted over the years: one of fearful silence over injustices committed within the same community, at first in the service of war, and then, after the 1998 Good Friday peace agreement ended decades of violence, in the interests of peace.

They love their neighbour. It doesn;t mean they have to love their neighbour's neighbour. The Bible's pretty clear that love isn't universal and that some people you just have to stone to death or decapitate.

That's an unfortunate misunderstanding of what the Bible says.

The famous "Good Samaritan" story is about 2 strangers. Their neighbor's neighbor is still their neighbor, especially when they are acquainted with each other, as the people mentioned in the article seem to be.

Also, the main command to kill in the Bible is very specifically given to the ancient Israelites who were given a promised land to occupy and make holy so that they may live separately as God's chosen people. No one living in the post-Biblical times can claim that prerogative on the basis of the Bible.

In retrospect, it was probably inevitable. The Army is, ironically, the only "political" institution that still functions in Thailand, after six months of protests.

Thai Army Chief announces military coup
Quote:
Bangkok (May 22, Thu): Thailand’s military leaders said the national Constitution has been suspended, after seizing power in a coup they said was aimed at ending months of political turmoil.

The development came after Thailand’s army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha seized control of the government in a coup on Thursday, two days after he declared martial law, saying the army had to restore order and push through reforms.

Gen Prayuth made the announcement in a television broadcast after a meeting to which he had summoned the rival factions in Thailand’s drawn-out political conflict, apparently with the aim of finding a solution to six months of anti-government protests.

"In order for the situation to return to normal quickly and for society to love and be at peace again...and to reform the political, economic and social structure, the military needs to take control of power," he said.

The Thai army has a long history of intervening in politics — there have been 18 previous successful or attempted coups since the country became a constitutional monarchy in 1932, most recently when Thaksin was deposed in 2006.
