The Madoka movie only earned about 200k more than the 2nd Nanoha movie during opening week actually. Madoka movie was 1.7million, while the Nanoha movie was 1.5 million. Neither can compare to mainstream anime movies like One Piece: Strong World. But both still did very well as far as anime movies go.

I mean the number of fans.... I wonder how many Nanoha fans exists here (in the US) compared to Madoka..... probably smaller than Madoka...

Given the abysmal failure of the S1 Nanoha DVD releases, I can't really blame them.

It's just a shame that S1 of Nanoha gets off to it's slow start, since it gets so much better later. But it also didn't have the marketing of Madoka, either, or a famous studio behind it.

In any event, I actually feel bad for Madoka fans; they essentially got fleeced twice to see the exact same series on a big screen. At least the Nanoha movie was all new, updated animation and a tweaked story, along with new material. And given that Nanoha fans went and saw the movie several times... I wonder if Madoka fans will even do that?

That is sad.

Especially since the license has expired...

...

Wait, can we put torrent links to all seasons up on AS again?

Why didn't it sell well though (besides the "not a big name" distributor)?

Geneon was the distributor.

It didn't sell well because of the same reason GaoGaiGar didn't sell well...

No marketing, advertising or any networks showing it.

I had to read fanfiction of Nanoha before I knew about it.

Doubtfull. Abyssmall failure though it was, the series is still on sale in R1 DVD's. Rare though they may be.

Who's got the license?

Last I checked, Funimation had it, but they let it go, because it's no longer listed under them.

Same with Familiar of Zero.

I think it was something like, Geneon bought the license, but ceased distributing physical DVDs during that time and then went bankrupt, and then Funimation (?) bought up the license and released it without any marketing.

Though my initial knee jerk response is to say that a magical girl show is likely not all that popular in the States.

On the topic of the Movie 2nd, I happened to have a "Nanoha Type" 2012 Autumn magazine arrive recently. Not sure if anyone scanned it or put up details about it on the internet. (My Japanese is really bad now so I don't think I can translate it) It's got tons of stuff on the movie it seems. ohmygawdtransformationscenes

Does it talk about a DVD/Blu-Ray release with English subs?

I've only skimmed it and looked at the pretty pictures, not sure. Seems like there's a lot of voice actor interviews and screencaps from the movie, and concept art you usually find in the companion books that they sell at the Japanese movie theater or at Comiket, etc. Second half of the magazine is comics (A Movie 2nd manga chapter) and a bunch of 4-koma, as well as a large section on full length (nearly so) pictures of who I think is Tamura Yukari and Mizuki Nana.

Little bit of review of the series so far as well, there's a few pages on the "favorite" scenes from each tv series/movie. I haven't actually read the entire text yet since I'm nearly up to my neck in school studies, and reading significant amounts of Japanese text takes lots of time >_<, but so far I haven't seen any mention of DVD or Blu-Ray.

The movie 2nd manga would probably look better than the movie....

I hear bigger disatisfaction towards movie 2nd A's than movie 1st

Probably one of the very few who bought the boxed series and the movie

I don't know. I liked both movies, but personally preferred the A's movie over the 1st movie. Where did you see all the dissatisfaction?

There should be a page or two that features results of a popularity poll that was held in some of the A's movie theaters. Could you take a picture of that for me? Assuming you have a camera.

There are more plotholes in movie A's, right? I saw some reviews since A's had more to lose being turned into a movie

There were more changes to the A's movie since there was too much of A's to fit into a movie...But I wouldn't call them plot holes. With almost everything removed, they added something else to keep the plot coherent.

Ex: Lieze twins = book went berserk on its own
Arisa and Suzuka accidentally going into a barrier = removed
memories of Wolkenritter with Hayate = montage
All other fights with Wolkenritter where Book of Darkness absorbed linker cores = done on 1st battle
Nanoha's group walking into the Wolkenritter = Wolkenritter walking into Nanoha and Fate
Yuuno researching = Ferret bus

Overall, the Book of Darkness was done better in the movie. For instance, it was no longer activated randomly while Hayate was in bed, but rather, it activated to save her life when a car nearly hit her while crossing the road. I think for why it went berserk is because it was unstable in the first place and once it "destroyed" the knights, Hayate went berserk herself, which is when the book of darkness combined with her.

This change makes more sense, since they never went into detail on why Arisa and Suzuka were able to walk inside the barrier in the first place.

It's been awhile since I watched A's but isn't that more than what happened in the series? And Reinforce gets a lot more screentime to make up for it, if that's not the case.

Yes, because there were no Lieze Twins, they had to combine both Fate and Nanoha losing their Linker core at the same time. Though It's not the only time they fight.

During the hospital scene? Yes. But it's rather insignificant either way.

Anyways, the series is hard to beat, but the movie did a pretty good job at a retelling. And none of the scenes removed were crucial to the plot. The few that were, were replaced with something else to make the movie make sense.
