Well, they show up more in the manga like in one of the newest chapters where they heal a bump on the head and where another Platelet gets a name aka "Backwards-cap-kun." who's not so strong as the other platelets. But I doubt we get so far in the anime given it came out just a couple weeks ago. But surely whenever there is a crisis aka some open skin or ruptured vein we gonna see those adorable hard-working lolis, so no worries. Besides we got to see them handing out a bucket to Mr T-Killer Cell.^^

They mostly featured in episode 2, but they made a cameo at the end of episode 3.

There's the scene in the OP where the main platelet (<==) is riding on WBC's shoulders. I believe someone earlier in the thread said that represented an actual biological relationship between them. Maybe we'll see that scene expanded somewhere along the line.

Ah, nice backstory of how always lost RBC met Neutrophil. Lucky their instructors managed to save them on time.

And cancer time already... I always thought he would be the final boss of this anime, I guess there's another deadly disease that will be for the final ep.

It doesn't have to be deadly illness though. Worst problem body had was allergy after all. Stray cancer cells don't seem that big deal in comparison.

Episode 7:

Wow, this episode is intense. Probably the most serious threat so far to the human body yet considering it's cancer cells.

Seriously, I think they really made cancer look like near unstoppable. The creators made the threat convincing enough that everyone had to unite together to defeat them. I found it rather impressive tbh.

Considering Cancer is a serious problem in real life too, I felt that they definitely captured the magic of the episode.

Well, it's just a day at the office for them, really. Since apparently, even healthy individuals produce thousands of cancerous cells a day.

BTW, do red blood cells really carry "nutrients" other than O2 and CO2?

What a great episode! You feel so sorry that the cancer cells have no part in becoming hunted villains. (To be fair, the other cells have no control over their fates either.) That said, I still want the small number of cancer cells still residing in my prostate after radiation to hurry up and die like most of their forebears. (Cool radiation therapy using microscopic particles of radioactive Cesium.)

If you're worried about me, thanks but you don't need to. In my case we might be talking about a few weeks or months less at the end of life. My treatment regimen has become more annoying lately though. I'm prone to "hot-flashes" because of a hormone I'm taking (an LHRH agonist). Here's a hint, fellas. If later in your life your female partner is going through menopause, show some sympathy.

Suppose we'll see any other medical treatments besides that steroid? The manga-ka obviously delights in the body's own mechanisms for self-repair and self-regulation. Imagine his depiction of my operation as little "neutron bombs" were embedded inside my prostate's apartment complexes.

Nah. There are all kinds of proteins in blood and other tissues that bind nutrients, so they're not entirely free-floating. But circulating blood cells don't have anything to do with that.

Well, I did read lots of stories where people who had cancer traveled the world or did stuff like doing a bike tour they always wanted to do and at the end of such travels the cancer was gone when they returned to the hospital for their treatment. Wonder if that "laugh" has something to do with that, making more NK-cells and making them more efficient.

As for the episode, felt to me like this episode had less animators than the previous ones? But still it was a great episode, full of fighting, backflash of the cancer cell, the threat it posed to the body as without the reinforcement it could have spread everywhere, its last words and ofc its promise to return. Good stuff. And lets not forget Platelet cheek touching. <3

Given that there are supposed to be several thousand of copy mistakes aka buggy cells every day in our body, it is no wonder the other cells watch the Immune-system, especially the T-killer cells, with some kind of fear as most of them must have seen some go into a cell district and kill some freshly born cancer cells before they could take root like it happened in the flashback. I do would be scared of a "police force" that could kill me anytime the moment I get sick, overtaken by a virus or become a suspect of cancer collaborator. Still like WBC said, that is his job. Though it is more the job of NK-cell and T-Killer-Cell.

I'm not that sympathetic to the cancer cells. Even healthy cells die for the good of the body all the time. I'm not going to get sentimental about cancer cells with no function other than to kill the host.

They really tried to make us feel sympathy towards the cancel cell, not gonna work sorry since we know how dangerous they actually are.

Cancer cell only have one purpose, and that's to multiple and grow. If it comes at the expense of the rest of the body then so be it. Multi-cellular organisms only exist because each individual cells is willing to play by a set of rules so that the greater community can live and reproduce, some times at the expense of their own survival.

Personally I also find it hard to sympathize with cancer cell. As a biologist, we're constantly looking for new ways to fight and eliminate cancer. To think of these enemies as anything approaching sympathetic goes against everything we've been taught and trained to do. I appreciate the manga's author trying to give readers a different perspective on cancer, as seen from a human angle, but that doesn't change the fact that at the end of the day cancer has to be found and eliminated if a human wants to continuing living a healthy life.

Also, if anyone's interested in the role of neutrophils in cancer, here's a nice article on the subject. Depending on the type of cancer, it seems neutrophils can help advance or limit cancer growth. This is true for many other immune cells as well, including macrophages.
