Sports:
Major- currently 3 seasons and 4th coming in january. Don't let the first season put you off they get older and mature as it goes on it is one of the best.
Eyeshield 21- American Football as you can imagine it will be the only one of it's kind.
Over Drive- Another good one of cycling.

Romance:
Seto no Hanayome- if you have not seen this one they go for it it is one of the best romance/comdies of 2007.
Hayate no Gotoku- same as SnH ranks around the top 10 this year.

Comedy:
Gintama- will have you laughing from the first ep definetly a must see and maybe underrated by many people.

Another great magic, romance and action anime is Shakugan No Shana. I think it has already been licensed, but it's a really great anime. It has a fresh and unique concept of "death."

Not a genre I am especially interested in, but some series I have heard positive reviews of are;
  • Ace o Nerae! (tennis)
  • Eyeshield 21 (american football)
  • Slam Dunk (basketball)

Huge area to cover! Some of my favorites in this are
  • Nodame Cantabile (seemingly incompatable college music students, this series just ended),
  • Lovely Complex (a tall high school girl falls for a short guy, this series is still running),
  • REC (a young "salaryman" is thrown together with an aspiring voice actress),
  • Please Teacher (a high school student has to marry his homeroom teacher to help cover up the fact that she is from another planet. A silly premis but the actual relationship that develops between the two is great)

The series Nodame Cantabile, Lovely Complex and Please Teacher above are all romantic comedies, so I would recomend them again. A few others that I really liked are:
  • Azumanga Diaoh (a high school slice of life comedy about a group of friends. Funny characters and funny situations.)
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (a wild series of situations and quirkey characters make this one very funny)
  • Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! (the other two FMP anime have their share of comedy, but Fumoffu is pretty much nothing but)
  • Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (Fountains of blood and gruesome decapatations were never so funny)
  • FLCL (a series that relies of surreal situations and twisted characters to create a hilarious story)

Quote:
fantasy/ magic [ it's fascinating still ^_^ ]
  • Visions of Escaflowne (it has some very "scifi-ish" elements to it, but I think of this as more of a fantasy about a girl who is magically transported to a mystical planet and becomes invovled in a war against an evil empire)
  • Fate/stay night (a story about a young man with magical powers who is drawn into an ancient battle for the holy grail)
  • Tsukihime, Lunar Legend (a series about a young man with a mysterious past who finds himself involved in a battle between two supernatural enemies)
Hope that helps!
