Just finished the first episode.
Cinder got rekt real bad. And a lunatic is about to hunt down Ruby. So Mistral is an Asian-themed kingdom, or it's just a few villages? The opening sequence is dope.

The WoR remnant episodes say that Grimm appeared just after sentient life came to be. It was in the very first narration done by both Ozpin and even Salem. I consider that information valid as I see no reason for either of them to lie. Even Salem was remrkably honest in all her narrations. Taken at face value then both soul and soullessnes are intertwined. The state of being a Grimm is the state of being emptied of a soul.

Yeah, the name of the place is literally "Remnant," after all. There are ruins everywhere (though with the constant evolution and destruction of human society, there's room for more flux in that), you've mentioned the shattered moon, and there are hints everywhere that Ozpin and Salem's conflict is rooted in events long, long since past that neither current human governments nor Ozpin's circle of followers are aware of. (If so, it's an open question if Salem told her followers. She seems to make a point of how Ozpin lies to his followers about the nature of the true conflict, so if she wasn't being a hypocrite she should, theoretically, tell Cinder and Watts and their Amazing Friends what's really going on...but evil Sauron types are often shameless hypocrites, so who knows?)

Seriously, though, the inherent weakness in the side of goodness is the constant threat of corruption, so their leaders often hide the true nature of their enemies from them. Evil leaders don't have to worry about that, because if one of their subordinates starts turning good, they can just kill them.

not necessarily because it is very hard to study them, most grimm attack humans on sight making it very difficult to study them up close and they dissolve when killed so you can't really study them after, and from what the show has shown us the only grimm that are captured alive are the small ones that would be like ansem only studying the shadow heartless. there are factors clearly show studying grimm incredibly difficult so the true secret of the grimm being still unknown at this point is highly possible but also incredibly likely

Well I'd say those things kinda get noticed when they're created.
But all we've seen is them crawling out of a hole somewhere, far, far away from civilization. That kinda goes against the whole "they're dead people come back to life" thing. |

If anything, I'd say it potentially ties into the idea of them being a kind of planetary defense mechanism, ala the Gohma -- but again, we know almost nothing about them, so at this point, we're not in a position to make any theories, let alone pretty far out ones like 'they were people all along.'
