So has there been any word on if SAO will suffer Christmas delays? (at the current pace episode 25 would air on December 22, right when Christmas programs tend to put anime on hiatus until January of the next year)

It'll be quite frustrating if they put the series on hold for a few weeks on the

VERY

LAST

FREAKING

EPISODE
.

The show will end in December as scheduled. Shows that have these sorts of holiday delays are basically only shows that will continue into the Winter season (barring a very unusual circumstance). The breaks usually occur in the first week of January, or the very end of December, as opposed to around Christmas (because the main holiday in Japan is around New Year's).

So anyway, there's nothing to worry about here.

Hey guys, I'm kind of new to Sword Art Online. Just started watching the anime adaptation 2 days ago. Currently on episode 10.

I know that Sword Art Online's originally a Light Novel series that's currently ongoing right now (Vol. 11 being released just last week) so, of course, the anime isn't going to have an actual ending. Unless if it strays off from the Light Novels in the last few episodes...

That would be very unfourtunate.

So with the Light Novels still going on and the anime ending soon, my question is what volumes/chapters does the anime cover from the Light Novels?

I want to continue Sword Art Online with the Light Novels when the anime ends.

The anime covers novels 1-4, plus a few side stories from later volumes.

And to be a bit more specific "a few side stories from later volumes" is actually just one story from volume 8, called "A Murder Case in the Area "

At this point, it would be rather foolish not to continue to animate the SAO novels when the title is bringing in so much fame. Unless somehow the BD/DVD sales completely contrast with its popularity.............

It's BD/DVD sales have basically cemented it as the third best selling anime series of 2012. It's volumes haven't finished coming out yet, but here's out the current top averages stand:

60,107 - Nisemonogatari (Winter, 5 vols) 8,532 DVD (15%) / 51,575 BD (86%)
45,804 - Fate/Zero Second Season (Spring, 1 vols)
38,212 - Sword Art Online (Summer, 9 vols) 7,779 DVD (21%) / 30,434 BD (80%)
23,183 - Kuroko no Basuke (Spring, 9 vols) 12,698 DVD (55%) / 10,485 BD (46%)
21,283 - Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon II (Summer, 7 vols)
10,622 - Inu x Boku SS (Winter, 7 vols) 5,246 DVD (50%) / 5,376 BD (51%)

Would this mean a possible release of an anime of Gun Gale Online to continue the story?

I believe somebody once said that selling 10,000 copies of a volume of a series is generally enough profit to warrant the making of a sequel. Acording to that, SAO volume 9 DVD sold almost 8,000 while the BD sold 30,000. Though that person may have just been talking about JC Staff......

Still, that sounds like more than enough of a pull-in to green-light animating the Phantom Bullet arc. (possibly needing Mother's Rosario to bring it up to a two-cour series)

Well, even if you set aside the rather-arbitrary threshold of 10,000/vol. (which is widely seen as very good for any anime studio), it's still one of the top-selling anime of the year, and also resulted in much-increased sales of the novels and tons of other merchandise. So yeah, if sales are the deciding factor, then it seems to be a no-brainer. Of course, there can also be issues beyond just sales (such as availability of the staff/studio based on previous commitments, and other issues). Right now, the SAO anime director is scheduled for Silver Spoon airing this summer, so I guess we'll see what projects are lined up for next year.

Well even if they've already decided to make an SAO sequel, I don't expect any official announcement for quite some time. It was a year and a half between the end of Toaru Majutsu no Index season 1 and the beginning of season 2, and the same with the end of Shakugan no Shana season 1 and beginning of season 2. It's only been a few months since SAO ended, so it will be quite some time before they make an announcement, let alone start airing a second season.
