Premise: Japanese highschool girl reincarnates as a spider monster in a fantasy world.

Setting: A huge dungeon filled with monsters in a fantasy world with game elements (status values, levels, skills, evolution).

What to look forwards to: The protagonist is born in an extremely hostile environment, has to figure out everything herself and use everything at her disposal merely to survive. So the main charm of this series is watching her overcome these challenges, improve herself and explore the world in her own idiosyncratic style. Despite the “kill or be killed” environment she maintains a positive attitude that provides a lot of humour and the title of the series effective sums up the attitude of the protagonist.

Possible reasons to avoid: If you're bad with spiders, you'll probably struggle to enjoy this. Despite having many commonly seen elements, overall this series is very much outside the mainstream, even for a fantasy setting. Humans and the like barely show up at all and interactions between characters is minimal. Despite the humour, the setting is very grim and not something any sane person would envy. Content warning for violence (monsters killing each other).

This should have gotten it's own thread long ago so I decided to create one. I had a few ideas on creating a first post that would hopefully be helpful to new readers - any feedback is welcome.

For reference, the next chapter should be out in raw early in the morning on Tuesday, Japanese time (normally just after midnight).

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts as a manga reader. I started reading the WN about a year ago and I enjoyed the current battle with the monkeys a lot - very tense and also very unusual. I've seen the odd fight on a cliff face (for example) but I can't remember any of them being a "major" battle - this is the main battle of volume 1 of the LN. Facing a suicidal group attack is also rather unusual.

I'm not sure what sorts of things you hope to see in the future but the depth of the world-building and foreshadowing in this series is something I find very satisfying. At a guess, if you have any questions like "does [X] ever get explained?" or "does [X] ever happen?" then the answer to most of them would probably be "yes".

Interestingly, "Kumo" demolished the competition in "collaborator" rankings but did poorly in the online poll. Putting it another way, at the moment, it's much more of a critical success than a popular success.

Got any particular references in mind?

On a different note, I quite like the changes with "Poison Taratekt". Although there's no real change to her shape (apart from the hole in her "ears") the net effect of all the subtle changes are quite nice - definitely feels like a level up on her previous forms. I particularly like the "ears" (dunno if they actually are ears though)

PS If there's any manga only readers reading this, I'd like to hear what you think about "Pride"

I didn't get what you meant at first but I see in the panel with 3D Manoeuvre there's "jaeger" written as a SFX

I'm not an AoT fan but I do seem to remember speculation from WN readers on whether the skill name was a AoT reference or not...

Two new titles acquired (Merciless and Monster Slaughterer). Time for a victory dance! Level 10 achieved, evolution possible... The labyrinth's middle layer is introduced. btw, there's some small changes compared to the WN but all/most of these are from the LN version.

Spoiler for chapter summary: Kumoko finds out that the entire middle layer of the Labyrinth is filled with magma. She loses HP just by being there and can't use her threads either since they quickly burn. She thinks climbing up the big holes to the top layer is impractical, or rather too scary, so she's rather stuck. She goes back to her temporary nest up the wall and decides to evolve first before deciding what to do next. She picks the "small poison Taratect" option since it's "rare"

Spoiler for chapter summary: Lots of cute imagery this week So, Kumoko wakes up from evolution. She looks a bit different but not significantly so. Her status values haven't changed much but she does have some new and upgraded skills. Most of the chapter is spent on looking through all the changes, until Kumoko finds that Appraisal-sama (which is now at level 8) can now give her a list of all the skills she could buy with her available skill points! And there she finds a strange skill with a very strange description called Pride She takes it. Merely taking the skill makes Taboo level up twice and gives her the title "Ruler of Pride", which in turn gives her two skills: "Abyss Magic" and "Hell"

Spoiler for chapter summary: Kumoko just about manages to escape through the passage to the middle layer, escaping the earth dragon. Not having any choice she goes to the middle layer and is eventually able to get the fire resistance skill. Now she can at least handle being able to stay in the middle layer for long enough periods to start making progress. She's attacked by a seahorse though but neither are able to damage the other - when it runs out of MP for fireballs it attacks Kumoko on land.

Spoiler for summary: On land, Kumoko is able to deal with the seahorses pretty easily, since physically they're as weak as upper layer monsters. However, the heat is still a problem and it's hard even to sleep... and then Kumoko wakes up with two catfish like monsters around her.
