Just watched the first episode of this and was pleasantly surprised. It's totally a "explain racing and race teams to newbies" episode, for the most part, but the animation was good with some nice dynamic camera shots of the cars on the track. That, and the human bits like some drivers being hammy stars and others being serious, or whatever is contained in the main photographer's past... they were all interesting enough for me to want the next episode.
I don't even know yet that this is the best racing anime this season, but I enjoyed it so far...

Yeah, I enjoyed this. I mean, OK, there was an awful lot of Motor Racing 101 infodumping about F4, formation lap, flags and safety car, but that's understandable if they're aiming at an audience who don't know much about this kind of thing.
Also, I know British Formula 4 introduced the 'Halo' safety device this year, so I was surprised not to see that but maybe they'd planned this one in a previous year or Japan hasn't introduced it yet? While the CG racing sequences did look a bit 'video-gamey' at times they seemed pretty solid in terms of depicting the racing, so that was good. This is on my list of shows to watch this season, for sure. |

I'm genuinely surprised by the amount of attention to detail to the actual racing in this. They aren't making stuff up, they used a very believable event in track for the action, explained the sport correctly and showed a tone of care and attention to the subject matter.
Not gonna lie, if this keeps up it might beat MF Ghost as the better sports car Anime this season. And this doesn't even have eurobeat!

Another track racing anime has arrived to the starting grid and hopefully by the end of the season, it finishes on the podium in first place.
Granted, there have been so few, and while I haven't seen MF Ghost yet, which is a sequel to Initial D and cannot quite compare, I will say that I liked the adult/grown up setting in Overtake where they showcase F4. The closest comparison is Capeta, but that was a while ago and that started from all the way back to kart racing. So it's refreshing to have the audience see what a "formula" car looks like right off the bat. We've got a fair bit of characters introduced in episode 1 but it's not as crazy as some other sports animes out there (like soccer/basketball/volleyball etc.), so I felt like everyone had enough showtime. Looks like this anime had a lot of logos and sponsors buy into it..but I did notice a certain "YouMotion" instead of "YouTube" logo on one of the cars haha. Glad they gave us a bit of an intro on what the cars do or some of the prep work that goes into it. The 2 teams we saw had different personalities that almost clashed had it not been for the photographer. Interested to see how some of their inner demons will play out as the season and races progress to the checkered flag! |

not race in this chapter but a lot of info. I liked that all the cars are in same conditions and in the end is up to the driver and not the car since all are the same and haruka isn't that good as I thought.
I did believe that the photographer was a big shot and had money but it wasn't like that, still he is helping in his own way. Another suprise that sae is his ex-wife, I do hope they can reconcile in the future seeing that he is giving his best again. And last I wonder why the girl of belsorriso was there with them at the beginning and then just disappear to her team just like that?, it was pretty random. |

This year's F1 season has been dominated by Team Red Bull and its top driver Max Verstappen, so much so that he's already clinched the championship with five races still to go. When asked to justify such a huge imbalance, F1 fans say that making the cars more equal would be punishing Red Bull for their success. Meh. |

That one guy is going to get someone killed.
I get why he's frustrated. Doesn't like being the second driver. And especially hates it on a team that actually makes the second driver sacrifice their own chances to win to support the primary driver. But that's the team he's signed himself up with. And recklessly driving around is just proving the owner of that team right. That he's a good sacrificial piece to boost the results of the main driver, but that's all. Gave him 20 minutes to take the lead not because he was really offering a chance to win, but because he figured it would take that long before his car started to wear out and it'd be time for the ace to take over. Good episode for Haruka. Getting some sponsorships allows the car to be less of a death trap and his skills can shine a bit more. He still couldn't claim a top 3 finish. But he was right outside this time. If he keeps going that podium position is definitely within reach. Quote:
Or more accurately told tell teams they can't put money into training facilities and better medical staffs if they are just wealthier than the other teams. If their cars and drivers are straight up better then yeah the results will turn out like that sometimes.

That was brutal. The 2nd driver is now no doubt the 2nd driver. Though he had a better start, his setup would not last the entire race, and that's what the team commander planned and projected out. Still, it was harsh to tell it like so.
On the other side, we learned of the other half for why he races. 4th from 8th isn't too shabby. |

This week's auto racing nerdery...
Quote:
The F1 drivers who come over to the US and race in IndyCar almost always say one of the biggest differences is that they can actually be friends with their teammates. In American racing, fans tend to support the individual drivers instead of the different teams, so each driver on a team can develop their own personality and following. Penske drivers Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin make a web series together, and the friendship between Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan, and Dan Wheldon when they were all at Andretti was legendary. "Slipstreaming" really is a thing. The best in the business at it are in NASCAR. At Daytona, Talledega, and Atlanta the cars run three-wide in packs ten rows deep, all inches from each other. Almost every race has at least one big wreck, but personally I think it's more exciting when they don't all wreck. And lastly, this week's race was run at Twin Ring Motegi. IndyCar used to race on the oval track there, and that was where Danica Patrick got her one and only win. |
