How to split an h264 avi using Virtualdub?

Hello all! I was wondering if someone could instruct me on how split a avi vid that's encoded with h264 using virtualdub 1.5.10. I can't open it. I get the following error:

VirtualDub Error
---------------------------
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'H264' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

OK

I downloaded the ffdshow codec and still no dice. Thanks in advance!

VDub can't read h.264 video streams.

Try MKVToolnix:

The splitting option is in "global" tab.
But this will change the AVI container format to to Matroska container...

I concur with this. The ONLY way to properly split and h.264 stream that's been muxed into avi (hopefully with avc2avi) would be to remux it into either mkv or mp4 and then split those files (using mkvmerge or mp4box). If you HAD to have it in avi, then you'd have to extract the raw video stream from the mkv or mp4 (using mkvextract or mp4box) and remux it into avi using avc2avi.

Final suggestion, leave it in MKV. Notice how much trouble it is to work with the darn thing in AVI? Why in the world would you want to mux it back to that horrible thing.

MP4Box is also capable of splitting files and I would assume that includes files with H.264 video. So there is always that option, if you can handle the complexities of a CLI. Once again if this option is used it would be best to leave the video in MP4.
