I see some possible ways this path can take...

Spoiler:

A. Seiji accepts Ayase. But since he still has a green mop attached to his hand, he'll not outright accept Ayase there but tell her he appreciates her but needs some time to settle some 'problems' (namely the mop on his right hand). Then the series will divert to settling the issues between Seiji and the green-haired thing, paving the way for a final Ayase-Seiji final...

B. Seiji outright rejects Ayase. This is a bit harsh though and personally I cannot see it coming from Seiji, especially since he does have a bit of emotion for Ayase. Least likely event I would say.

C. The green-haired bakemono interferes by swirling around, pulling Seiji away and away from Ayase with Seiji going "Waaaaahh" and Ayase confused and hurt. Most likely event since this manuver is shown in high frequencies in both manga and anime, thus pulling the drama longer.

D. Seiji reveals his ugliness to Ayase. Ayase talks to the bakemono and comes to a resolution with it. Most likely Ayase would step aside... quite likely.

Rooting for A, though odds are stacked against it.

And yeah, I am of the same opinion as both of you. While the series has slowly become more 'ayase-focused' it is still named after Midori. And as of yet I haven't seen a shounen romance manga divert from the 'first come first serve' rule.

Well, there were color pages this week. That was nice. But in the end Sawamura pulled an "I like you but not in that way because I have someone else" stunt. Then he went on to say something like this to Midori after Ayase left and cried alone under a street light (I don't have the raws in front of me, so I'm paraphrasing): "I don't feel like it can be just anyone anymore. Midori, you're the only one who can be my girlfriend."

So yeah. The curse of first come first serve in shounen romance continues. This had such a good chance of not sucking too, but now I don't even really want to translate it anymore. But I will because I just wanna get it over with.

the reason love hina is my favorite romantic comedy is because its the only one where I actually like the main characters love interest.

I hope the anime will have a different ending then the manga has, but it probably won't.

It'd be hard - unless you're the mangaka - for anyone to know yet how the manga will end, though, and compare it to the anime's ending. The manga is still being published in the weekly "Shonen Sunday" magazine.
