True, but that doesn't say much. I'm more curious to see if the anime can fix the source material's problems.

I'm even more curious to see what Railgun 3's animation will be like. We would be living in one funny timeline if the Accelerator spinoff was the one that got the best animation.

I assume they'll have the same staff for Railgun 3 so I imagine Nagai will probably run a tight-ship...although you never know .

Hiroshi Nishikiori had no idea Index season 3 was going to be animated before its announcement in Oct (I guess he is referring to 2017 Oct but I am not sure). Before Oct, Hiroshi had already been commissioned to work on other projects including Monster Strike The Movie, Dances with the Dragons and Trinity Seven Movie.(All these projects seems to be going on simultaneously along with Index season 3. In other words, Hiroshi was working on 4 projects at the same time or continuously hopping from one project to the next.)
When asked about how he made Index first season, Hiroshi pointed out that there are many problems in translating Kamachi Kazuma's novel into animation including how animation should be done, the sequential order of animation, the script, how to keep the charm in the novel and present them to the audience, etc. They had many discussion. In the end, they decided to "do something first and see what will happen".
Kamachi Kazuma said Hiroshi should make appropriate content cut to make animation presentable. But Hiroshi responded that he wanted to keep all content in the novel and present all dialogs in the novel.
Hiroyuki Yoshino (screenwriter for Index anime) said that he was surprised at how Index novel series were deconstructed by Seishi Minakami(In charge of Script for Index I). Hiroyuki was pleasantly surprised to find that the fourth volume of Index season 1 was made to 3 episodes(Angel fall) but the first volume of Index season 1 was made to 6 episodes. He said that such variance in number of episodes was special and appropriate.
Kamachi Kazuma said that the first volume was about how Touma faced events in Academy City which are totally normal to Touma but not to the audience. It is difficult to bridge this gap. Kamachi criticized that he felt something were not done right for the first volume. Hiroshi Nishikiori immediately responded that it was difficult for him to strike a balance between what Kamachi Kazuma had in mind for Index and what was written in the novel. During Index S1 and S2, Hiroshi usually chose the latter.
Hiroshi Nishikiori said that each story in Index was presented in a way only a novel can by having each book to be a different story. It was difficult for him to do the same in anime. So he could only follow where the plot was heading.
Hiroshi Nishikiori said that because they decided not to cut any content. It was not possible to present all hardships in detail that each characters had during their development. So they can only choose particular characters to present their hardships in length like how many punches a character was taken. He also tried to put himself into characters to understand how they felt. In this process, he remade some scenes many times.

Misaka on the contrary, is a character that can fight. Misaka is only being helped when she is almost failed to defend herself. Misaka and Index are completely opposite. Misaka has her own characteristics in the novel and she is also one of the character that he gave the most thoughts about. In Index, Misaka would never say what is on her mind. He presented Misaka in this manner, in anime, movie and Railgun. He starts to feel troubled by how he should present Misaka in Index Season 3 as each audience has their own image of Misaka. He only hoped what he is doing about Misaka can be acknowledged by audience.
Hiroshi said that in Index season 3, many new characters would be introduced as the story expands. He wanted to show each character's standing and personality to the audience. He especially wanted not to let how powerless Touma's fight with magicians to be weird. So he decided to show more about how Touma felt during those fights. Even the story gets bigger, he still wants to keep certain aspect to be coherent.
Hiroshi mentioned that he wanted to make audience to hear the voice acting for some characters in NT in Index season 3.
Hiroshi stated that compared with a perfect hero, he prefers heroes like Touma and Hamazura which are more of a 'grassroots' type of hero. They only need to shoulder responsibilities of normal weight. But for the type of hero like Accelerator, his responsibilities must match with what his power can offer. For certain Accelerator will have more and more challenges ahead.

Problems with the TaMNI adaptation in a nutshell:

1.

Hiroshi was working on 4 projects at the same time or continuously hopping from one project to the next.

Why not just find another better director, especially when one that isn't THAT busy?

2.

In the end, they decided to "do something first and see what will happen".

Of course there was no real plan.

3.

Kamachi Kazuma said that the first volume was about how Touma faced events in Academy City which are totally normal to Touma but not to the audience. It is difficult to bridge this gap.

That gap should not be bridged, the weirdness of it is part of the charm of the series because it is integral to the story.

4.

You could have, if you knew how to properly pace each episode.

That being said, I don't think any amount of decent pacing could've fixed their task of doing literally 9 volumes in 24 episodes(prior to them begging for more and only getting two).

And for what it's worth,
"do something first and see what happens" worked out really well considering Index 1, to everyone's actual surprise was a big hit when it clearly was just supposed to be another one season adaptation.

^Your post made me wonder if he really watched the anime adaptation at all.

Either way, there was no saving when the final choice was adapt the two major arcs of this series that have so much content on them.
What would one have wanted? Entirely remove non Touma scenes? That would have been hilarious to see, people would complain regardless though.

I am talking about all of the seasons, not just this one. There has been a pattern from the very beginning of him pulling this and it's annoying and one of the reasons many dislike her character. Also, the EDs with Index posing in front of generic screensavers where highly unnecessary when they could have used that time to either show a bit more of the episodes or to make them be relevant to what was happening in the season or arc (as in get creative with it).

Really, no amount of pacing? How about just adapting up until the war declaration after British Halloween and then leave WW3 as it's own separate cour? As much as I would like to see NT being adapted, there was literally no need to rush to have WW3 THIS season (something many of you wanted to happen with unrealistic expectations and now that you got your wish you complain).

That would only work ONCE, in the first season. The fact that he kept repeating this for every season after instead of learning SOMETHING from it says a lot about how much thought he truly put into it.

Kuroageha, YES I watched the anime (all seasons even Railgun) and have read the LNs, kind of why I can and am making these complaints (which is more than can be said for others) and take into account that I was one of the people that didn't entirely hate the season (doesn't mean I am blind to very obvious the problems the series has had since the beginning and I don't care if you or anyone else don't like what I have to say).
