[manga] Characters other than Naruto and Sasuke that appear to be important

Well from what I can tell personally I think Gai, Lee, and possibly Neji has more of a role than most of the other characters. I mean it seems Shikamaru and Gaara played their role. Not only that it seems to me that Kishimoto specifically made Gai's team have a rivalry towards Kisame. So my most important characters other than Sasuke and Naruto are Kakashi, Sai, Gai, Lee, Neji, Shikimaru, Hinata, and Sakura. Of course these aren't in any particular order and I didn't include Team Hebi or Akatsuki members...

I think the only reason why Sakura might be important is because she is Sasuke's friend (I think they're still friends, despite what's happened) and on Naruto and Sai's team. If she didn't have either of those to drive her character, I dunno where she'd be...

I honestly don't think Madara is important. He has been mentioned only twice and not twice in a row but two very gapped times. I don't think he is more important then characters like Neji or Hinata at least.

Madara is the man behind the current, and possibly last, evil organization of the story.
Neji was an arc middle boss and Hinata was Naruto's cheerleader. 260 chapters ago.
They are irrelevant storywise right now.

And I disagree with Madara still. I mean he is probably going to become important but right now he has only been referenced twice. We haven't even proof that he is still alive. Besides overall Neji has done a lot more for the storyline then Madara's two reference points have.
