Well folks, I have the BDs (I also have the DVDs, but that's so I can watch this on the TV with family, since the only Blu-Ray player in the hosue is the one in my computer), and I have some news that I consider rather disappointing. The insert songs (or at least the ones in the first two episodes, which is as far as I've bothered to check yet) haven't been subbed. I don't know why they would make this kind of oversight: each specific song was chosen for each specific situation for a reason, and if you can't understand them you're missing out on a great deal of what the episodes are trying to convey at those points.

A licensing issue, perhaps? Since these are AKB songs its probably really easy just to find some translated lyrics online somewhere.

I could just watch the episodes I downloaded oiginally, if it was just me. But when I'm watching the DVDs with someone else, it doesn't really work to pause it and say "now let's look up the lyrics to this background song online so you can better understand what's really going on in this scene."

Damn, I thought they got the licensing issues dealt with, but then considering the policies of Japanese record labels (I recall that if Macross Frontier were to be released outside Japan without the legal custody battle, licensing the songs would be the final hurdle), I wonder if someone explained to the King Records (presently AKB48's parent label) suits about the possibility of being able to promote the real-life group to a new audience that direct record sales couldn't do overseas (except for a niche audience consisting of hardcore wota).

Going back to RW's report, we wonder if removing the subtitles/lyrics of the songs saves Sentai some money or legal issues, but I don't like removing integral parts that are critical in explaining to non-fans about what's the story is all about (yes, we remember that some people outside of both anime and idol fandoms have no idea what and how the idol system works, and all they know about *48 is either it's "weird", the Heavy Rotation PV or Minami Minegishi's shaved head while making her public apology).

God, I don't remember the anime looking THAT badly drawn...

Is my memory afflicted by the lack of J-Pop songs lately in my life?

What has the world gone to? (???)

Just finished watching this. I also want a third season but the BD/DVD sales of second season weren't that good and some of the AKB and sister group members that provided the voices of No Name characters have graduated.

Oh sure, complain about the shot that lasted a fraction of a second.

It looks fine.

I just finished watching the first season of this with family. I have to maintain that the lack of translation on the insert songs is harmful to the series, particularly in episodes like episode 13, where the songs are actually delivering a significant portion of the message and the emotional content of the episode.

Yeah, Sentai QUALITY as usual.

Also applies to almost every Satelite production since Macross Frontier, which most of the time they outsource the work to South Korea or Vietnam, so I'm not surprised about QUALITY.

I've seen truly cringe-worthy character designs -- look for "the worst anime" in MAL.

Oh, more likely, it's been too long that you're so used to anisongs that it's a culture shock to hear real idol music.

It's just that so much had been crammed in that you can get disoriented by the pacing issues. Also, when it finally came out, LL and its fanbase ate into most sales of similar-looking shows, asides from the alleged otaku aversion to real-life idols and anything associated with them (they claim it's "viral marketing") and their hardcore preference to 2D idols. So it was a loss, although the good thing the anime did indirectly was to introduce AKB48 to a foreign audience.

Yes, all the sudden they decided to graduate, with Hata and Nakaya rushing off to enroll at seiyuu schools, and Yagami deciding to go off the grid, and attend law school (or so she said).

I honestly don't think it was badly drawn I was just joking around. I think the anime was nicely done (on the most part)

I remember the flying around in space more than THAT scene though.

Cheers

And... I'm pleasantly surprised.

Well think about it, turning what would be a cheap cash idol cash in using a popular shoujo Manga series and making it it something that can be meant for everyone from Mecha Fans, Shoujo Fans, Yuri Fans, Ecchi Fans. Something for everyone, that is something AKB0048 managed to achieve.

Another member of NO NAME is graduating: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com.au/n...n-voice-acting

Amina Satou, who voiced Yuuka, is graduating from AKB48 to focus on voice acting too. It's getting more unlikely for getting a third season with almost half of members of NO NAME graduated.

The plot was mostly settled at that point, Nagisa became 14th Acchan, Chieri ties up loose ends. The only real problem left was the Kanata/Takamina issue which pretty much ends on shitty note for Kanata since Mimori became a successor and she didn't and we figured out where do center novas goes.

Still a new generation can work for AKB0048.

Um. I considered this to be the intro into a huge world that could be exploited. What about the first AKB0048 that started the revolt?

What about the huge empire still alive?

Bring on the star wars material

You mean the story of the founding of Akibastar with Tomochin and Mayuyu being the two pioneers of the planet who helped settle on the planet, then defending it against the corporate giants who discover the profitability of cheap mined Dualium and deciding that entertainment gets in the way of their business of misery and the war that burns the first Akibastar to the ground?

I can dig it.

The creation of the DES forces. The first crackdowns of the "music revolt". The censorship, The political ploys behind it.

Who sold the Katyusha to AKB? When was it outfitted for war?

There's a lot of things in the background that could make for a really deep story.

There were some side-story manga, but they're different interpretations of the show's storyline.

Of course there's staggering amount of world-building material that could've allowed for deeper exploration to answer about how and why it came to be a cold war between DGTO and the Protection Sphere factions over FTL technology and dualium, but given the tepid sales (too easy to blame a couple of certain similar shows), further expansion (and the remote possibility of a third season) has become more unlikely, and thus some questions are left unanswered (only to be filled out by fanfic and doujinshi authors).

Even if S3 never happens it'd be nice to hear more of what Okada has in mind

Seems like she would want to expand on the graduation concept.
