HDD manufacturer's falsely advertise the size of their drives. They base everything on 1000, when really it should be 1024

Since you have an 80GB driver (manufacturers) it should be about 76.29GB big when windows formats it.

As for you other problem, it's probably lost files, just doing a search for files that are bigger than 100MB on your HD should find you the culprit.

If it isnt then you might be in a world of trouble.

1) Check your HD for file allocation errors. (Right-click on the drive in "My Computer",
select the "Tools" tab, then "Error Check"). This is not likely to solve your problem,
certainly if the drive is formatted as NTFS (and not FAT), but it's worth a shot.

2) System Restore might be taking up quite a bit of space. Check "Control Panel" ->
"System" -> select "System Restore" tab. Space used may be up to 5 Gb per drive.
(I personally disabled it, but you have to decide for yourself this feature is worth the space)

3) Some space is in use for virtual memory as well. To see how much space is used,
select the same "System" icon in "Control Panel", then select the "Advanced" tab,
the "Settings" button in the "Performance" section, then select the "Advanced" tab of
the window that opens. The size of the virtual memory is near the bottom of the window.
(Virtual memory is when Windows runs out of RAM and starts using your HDD for memory)

Go to command prompt and type 'Chkdsk C: /f'.

Let it fix whatever it finds.

1) Defragment
2) Grab sequoiaview and/or diskview
and see if you can gather information about where your space is from those.

You'd be better off using Scandisk, not chkdsk, with 98.

Have you tried emptying your Recycle Bin? Files in Recycle Bin still takes up space until you permanently deleted it off your hard drive. That's why you are able to restore files in the Recycle Bin.
