I can sum up my impression of Accel World like this:
Spoiler for image:
Other than I think there was a pig onscreen at one point, possibly a school, and I might recall that there was a scene from Mad Max in Tokyo. I'm pretty sure there were no red planes or islands in the Adriatic Sea though. Yea, there definitely was a pig, because she seemed pleased talking to the pig, and she was on screen more, so I can let that slide. My suggestion for the next 22 (11? 10?) episodes, screw the plot, give me more Kuroyukihime. |

Okay, seen episode 1 thusfar and love it. Love the whole premise of a whole secret virtual world going on in between the seconds of normal life. A common cliche for a story like this that shows a world in a tech singularity (ie. where machines are mere extensions of man and the line between humans and tech is blurred) is that the world in question is dystopian and dark. I like the fact that the regular world is nice and clean and the picture of the so called perfect society and the Accel World (or at least the game/tournament/shonen fodder version of it) is the dystopian one.
One thing I have to nitpick: wouldn't accelerating someone's brain cause eventual burnout/overload? I hope that this is addressed somewhere in the anime, if it isn't already addressed in the other media "Accel World" appears in. I mean 1000X normal speed is no small overclock. If there is an epidemic of fried brains from overuse of the Brain Burst program, I'm pretty sure some government agency would be on this in a heartbeat. Can't wait for more. The animation is gorgeous and I like the characters so far. I don't mind that the opening hints at a tournament style anime cause I want to see what they'll do with it. |

In the second episode, when Kuroyukihime is asked what her relationship with Haru is, she responds that she confessed to him and he rejected her and when he confronted her about it afterwards, she said that she merely told the truth. Unless the version I'm watching has crappy subs?

Ooh this anime looks kind of interesting. It's vaguely similar to the .Hack anime, but it seems more colorful.
Watching this first episode, it totally reminds me of this: We may actually be close to getting there!

Interesting first episode. The virtual reality world is pretty damn cool and I'm interested in seeing where this is going. It doesn't look like it will have that element of social networking that I was hoping for, but oh well. Also, it's a real pain in the neck trying to avoid looking at posts in this thread about the pre-air episodes...
Everyone seems to like butterfly girl but frankly I'm more interested in the cat girl

I find it odd that J.C.STAFF isn't the one animating this. I just realised that the anime is being produced by Warner adn those OVAs are being animated by J.C. I've never seen this collaboration before...

High-school bullying is a tired meme that should be put on the shelf for a few years.
This show shares a number of themes with Dennou Coil and Real Drive, both of which impressed me more than what I saw in episode one of Accel World. It's worth another couple of episodes, but if it relies on using fighting sequences, cute girls, and flashy graphics to paper over its lack of a deeper story, I doubt I'll stick with it.
