I love how Ranka wants her friends to be together. That makes all more lovable than ever to me. Also mature. What hurts the most to her isn't she lost some crush competition, but that she's alone after her biological brother died, her best friend/crush was kidnapped by aliens and her other best friend is thrown into a coma.

Come to Sheryl's bosom, Ranka... You two will need hugs when she's awake.

It's Mao all over again. At least Ranka's message (and Kawamori in in the interview) is to have hope.

Did you notice? The first male-centered triangle disappeared together. In the second one (Zero), the lovers did (poor Mao was alone), and now in Frontier... only the hero does, leaving both heroines behind. Although there is a promise of reunion, it's not likely to be addressed.

There is something symmetrical about it.

Sheryl is not selfish. Read the context, she was worried about Alto's well-being after he's put in the hospital (he's in a wheelchair). Nowhere it says, she puts Alto's emotions over anything else? Considering that she hired the SMS to SAVE GALAXY, in the first movie. And how she pushed Ranka to safety in this one, even if it was at the expense of her life apparently?

It's the one people are saying that lead to Alto and Sheryl understood their reasons for what they do. You know "Why do you fly?" and Alto's answer "Why do you sing?" Unless I got it mixed, but I got the vibe that they reached to an understanding that they're both staking their lives in what they do.

"I started singing to live, but now I live to sing." Stuff. It seems that they are inspiring each others...Which is what Sheryl did in the beginning of the TV series and what Alto did for her in the end of the TV series. Yot-chan will correct my interpretation from second-handed information. I don't claim is gospel, I'm reading summaries and piecing together like a puzzle

Ranka's character was indeed changed. Now she's more Mao Nome-ish than TV!Minmay-ish, I believe. Only with far more doses of moe and badass. I love her in the movie so far. She's probably my favorite with Sheryl.

Anyway, I won't write anything else until I watch the movie.

Actually I agree to a point with this, but it made seem Ranka/Alto incompatible in the TV series. Sheryl wasn't changed into Ranka, nope. But she was given a "traitor" plot, instead of Ranka. With Ranka helping to save her (but less dramatically ). And it carried out differently with vast different results

Ranka knew she was going to leave so it seemed like a last ditch attempt to understand him). Alto's reaction wasn't "I'll nuke her face" or condemn her and he made painstakingly attempt to understand and reach out for Sheryl (what he didn't do for Ranka) since movie 1 after the shove misunderstanding.

Ranka isn't the issue. Or Sheryl. It's Alto who isn't just that

Sheryl did not need to ask Alto about his reason for flying and vise-versa because they both achieved mutual understanding about the subject matter.

Ranka hasn't gotten a fucking clue in the TV or in the movie. Hell, at one point of the first movie she made a horribly dumb remark at Alto, something the latter had been trying to forget.

A final note: I support AruRan till Kawamori says there was NO chance of it happening. I mean, Kawamori gave them BOTH equal terms. The movie ending still looks quite fake to me, given how he can make a 360 decision like that. I'll trust Kawamori's words only.

Thess, remember that personalities and emotions are what draw one person to another. Alto WAS quite into Ranka, but Sheryl came into the middle before their chemistry even got a chance to collide. But like I was saying, if Alto marries someone for personality (who he's compatible with), I believe it will be Ranka. Note that she is not entirely selfish. If she was aware Alto was hers no matter what, the Frontier would be first. Remember that Alto wants to protect Ranka over Sheryl (hence his "I want to protect you" in movie 2). Ozma mentions putting his woman first is the way to show them we love them.

Kawamori created the movie. This is his ending, sad to say. The TV series ending? Yoshino's way.

Kawamori has done a lot of bittersweet endings before (I'll say all the male-centered Macross triangles end up with someone going MIA ). Secondly... I don't think any Macross triangle has 'equal' terms when one girl is younger than the other (spoilers: like songs and mecha tradition, they lose in Macross love triangles).

Also, just because he didn't have Ranka with Alto doesn't mean he hates her. The guy is a Minmay fanboy and he'll never pair her up with Hikaru. I think he loves both Ranka and Sheryl (and Cathy, she's his option for late night)

This movie is Kawamori's vision. He said: don't rewatch the tv series latter half. Watch Macross Zero instead for mood.

If you want to stick at the TV series ending, don't go around saying you are listening to Kawamori. Mmokay?
