HOLY NECRO THREAD BATMAN!

... yes, it's been 12 years, or approximately since Asuki was founded, since this thread has seen life. Then again, this is what happens when this series airs around if not before Evangelion, and well before Asuki or the Internet as we know it today existed. However, after watching Build Fighters I was recommended this, and have been watching quite a bit of it. I also have permission from a mod to resurrect this, as long as I'm talking about what I've seen.

Also, despite this series being around 20 years old, spoilers are still spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the series, so everything is going to be behind tags (especially since going in blind, I got huge with a huge twist that I'll get to).

So, despite what I've heard about G Gundam and its ridiculousness... I'm honestly enjoying the series. Yes, there are things that show a great amount of inconsistency and other things that would be sub-par by today's standards, but I just ignore those and say "it was 90's stuff"

Now, having just finish Build Fighters before I started this series, it was a rough transition as we're introduced to Domon Kasshu, and the first five episodes just introducing our main cast

Spoiler for Introductions:

-We have our five main Neo Nations: America, France, China, Japan and Russia. Add in 90's semi-stereotypes... well, to be totally honest the only one that actually bugged me was America's fighter being called Chibodee. And maybe that he's a boxer. Still, not too bad
- And Domon only actually destroying the head of one gundam, and only in the first episode? Yes, it was an excellent introduction, but I suppose that plot kept getting delayed due to this being a 49ish episode series, and each character getting their own episode. Of course, because they're going to be main characters, each episode after the first is declared a draw...
-And who the heck was the guy in the photo? His brother? His dad? And not even a single clue in the first five episodes
-And before I got farther in the series, I kept wondering what the heck King of hearts was. Add in that Domon seems to be very inconsistent with martial arts (catches a ton of bullets first episode, and that's the only time he seems to be awesome this early)
-And of course, everyone's favorite (semi-sarcasm here)... SHINING FINGER! Oh, and "Let's get ready to battle! Gundam Fight, Begin!"

When it takes until episode six to actually hit the plot... well, at least we got to the actual plot of the series.

Spoiler for Plot... then Monster of the Week.:

-So episode six is where we learn about the Dark Gundam and Kyoji. This is also the first of several censors to this series, as the Japanese name is "Devil Gundam"... this was a bit irritating.
- And this is where the military/political aspect comes in, as we have someone trying to use the Shining Gundam for their politcal career.
-So the whole issue is that Kyoji steals the Dark Gundam, kills their mother, and gets their father in cryoprison. How is Domon to defeat him? The Shining Gundam has a Super Mode which uses Domon's anger to activate.
-After all this... well, the plot takes a backseat, outside of encounters with Dark Gundam Cells, as we go to Monster of the Week format.
-This also has the two episodes I liked the least: The tragedy of the Canadian fighter, which is immediately followed by the tragedy of the English fighter. At least the English fighter had a semi-decent end, as I don't believe he died (the Canadian guy is full of sorrow with no outlet... that episode was plain out sad)
-The next episodes show another side of Domon. As I like to sum it up, he's an insufferable jerk with a Heart of Gold. Sometimes I wonder why Rain doesn't just leave him... but 90's thing, I guess?
- The other thing we learn about in this part is the (known) extent of the Dark Gundam's abilities... between mind-control, and the ability to self-regenerate. Though bringing the dead back to life is pushing it, even for this series.
-Then we get a tip to head back to Japan...

Next is where the major arcs kick in. I originally was going to call this the Master Asia arc, but I instead call it the Shinjuku arc, parts 1 and 2.

Spoiler for Shinjuku, part 1:

-First, keep in mind that I had no knowledge of G Gundam beforehand. So, episode twelve brings us to Shinjuku, where we meet the one and only... Master Asia, Undefeated of the East and Domon's martial arts master.
-Seeing these two team up to defend Shinjuku... well, this is the part where some inconsistencies start showing up. Of course, we have the ridiculous martial arts, but I can overlook this. Then we have another censor, in the Death Army being called the Dark army.
-The Dark army has been besieging Shinjuku, and the people there are quite desolate, needing some heroes....
- However, Master Asia and Domon handle this problem quite well, despite an idiot letting one into shinjuku.
-Yet Rain notices Master Asia acting weird... I'm figuring he's just setting Domon up for some test.
-Followed by: what the hell? Our other Neo Fighters and Main Cast are fighting against Domon, and have great power? They keep referring to That Man, who I assume is Kyoji, right?
-And we also see what happens when a person is fully consumed by Dark Gundam Cells, as they're the pilots of the Dark Army and look like skeleton-zombies

Now, let me reiterate: I had no knowledge of G Gundam, which leads into this...

Spoiler for Shinjuku, part 2:

- First: RAIN IN DAT BODYSUIT! Fanservice moment of the 90's, right here.
-Which is another inconsistency: Domon's suit is the rising Sun on black, whereas Rain gets a pink and black suit. Not complaining, though (too busy drooling)
-So Rain faces the dark Army, and then another mysterious Gundam shows up. Of course, Domon has to save Rain.
-Also, apparently Domon's martial arts are purely plot-driven. He has to face the other four, and I'm still expecting Master Asia to show up and either say this was a test, or to help Domon defeat them.
-So that leads to... WHAT THE F*CK???? Master Asia is a Bad Guy?! Based on Internet, I'd always thought he was a good guy, bu apparently he's not only following the Dark Gundam, he's following it of his own free will?
-Not even Rain, despite finding that the other support characters were about to be infused with Dark Gundam cells, can break Domon of this shocked (and honestly, I'm just as shocked as him)
-Also, more proof his martial arts are plot driven: he actually displays decent skill as he battles up the tower.
-My favorite thing about this part of the arc(note: sarcasm): This random Shuffle alliance shows up, and they're around for only an episode and a half. At least it explains the title of King of Hearts... but then they sacrifice themselves to save the rest of the cast? On one hand, it was a brave sacrifice. On the other hand.... we couldn't have gotten more exposition on these characters, could we??
- Back to Domon against Master Asia. Well, Domon is getting his ass handed to him, but he still has the Super Mode... which in fact is effective against Master Asia.
-On the other hand, using that power beam ends up being the key to fully awakening the Dark Gundam, which has been hiding under Shinjuku all along!
-Also, This Guy shows up: the Badass Neo-Germany fighter Schawrtz Bruder (I think that's how it's spelled). I thought he was the Char character for this series, as he wears a mask, and can even hold off Master Asia... but he acts nothing like the Char personalities I know of. I guess he's the be the replacement for Domon's master?
-Even with this Badass character, Shinjuku ends in tragedy, as the dark Gundam rises and the rest of Shinjuku falls to pieces. The only good news is that there seems to be a lack of casualties.
-And with Master Asia's betrayal, as well as the fall of Shinjuku, we go into the next arc...

This is a 90's action/shounen series, so naturally there has to be... a Training Arc! At least I have yet to hit a Recap episode.

Spoiler for Training, part 1:

- As Domon is still obsessed over finding Master Asia and thinking he can bring him to his senses, Neo Germany stops him and appears to cut a tree with a rusty sword, telling Domon that until he can do the same, Domon will be unable to defeat Master Asia.
-And because Domon tries and fails with the sword, he tells Rain he's off to train (again, I wonder how she puts up with him)
-And so we come to one of the two things I love about the training arc (again, sarcasm): for a supposedly secluded area where he trained with Master Asia, everyone else follows him there (I guess you have to keep everything together...)
-Which turns out to be a decent choice. Master Asia is still tracking Domon and trying to turn him, and most of the other characters are fighting their own demons. Naturally Domon has to help them (namely Chibodee and Georges) break past the fear that the Dark Gundam planted.
-Which leads to my next favorite part: first, a criminal from Georges past just happesn to break free, and we see a random bar out here with the fallout from Georges and his butler. The criminal I can believe... but a random bar is just too much.
-I should also mention that Neo Germany keeps having to save people as well, and Domon finds that he can go into Super Mode at some points and not others, and still can't cut with the rusty sword. More training is needed...
-And just in time for Master Asia to do a full assault. Did we also mention that the tournament is only a few days away?

And so the first half starts to build to a climax

Spoiler for Traing part 2, and climax of Part 1:

- As the Dark Army appraoches... once again, RAIN IN DAT BODYSUIT! Too bad she's practically useless this time, with another Domon save.
-Though, at least when her and Domon team up, they produce an very powerful SHINING FINGER! Because, you know, this series is all about the SHINING FINGER! And the Announcer guy, of course.
-Otherwise, Master Asia sends to full power of the dark Army against our main characters. They decide not to defeat him, but rather to just break through the army and get to Hong Kong for the championship.
-Domon still tries to face Master Asia, but his training isn't quite complete...
-Neo Germany lends a hand, and not only sweeps away to army, but gets most everyone out of there... minus Domon
-Domon, naturally, stays behind the face Master Asia once and for all, even with his training not complete. Which leads to him still getting his ass handed to him.
-And yet, we come to a beautiful shounen-esque moment. admittedly, I don't remember the exact sequence, but I do remember neo Germany coming back at the last second... however, his cockpit gets fully destroyed.
- I believe it's this event which allows Domon to finally master Super Mode, and we get the sweet payoff: Master Asia is finally beaten by Domon, unable to predict any of his moves.
-And it's really disappointing that when the Dark Gundam shows up, Kyoji just laughs alot, before Super Mode goes and blows away both the dark Gundam and Kyoji in one hit. But I guess that's what he had the Master Asia battle for?
-Speaking of Master Asia, he just refuses to go down. Shining Gundam has its cockpit destroyed... but Burning Gundam (DAMMIT ITS GOD GUNDAM, YOU CENSORING BASTARDS!) shows up.
-And we have an insanely heart-tugging scene, as Rain gets control over Shining Gundam in its last moments, in order to give the last of its power to Domon (god that scene made me almost tear up). And thus God Gundam was born!
-For the record, because I'm watching English Dub, I'll probably still call it Burning Gundam
-And with Burning Gundam up and running, Domon knocks Master Asia down one last time before taking off. However, I'm pretty sure that both Master Asia and Kyoji are going to show up again.

And so that brings me to where I am currently: episode 24.

Tjis is again where my suspension of disbelief got pushed... with the clock running down, you know Domon is going to make an entrance. But going from South America, and using the ring that's aroiund the Earth to make it to Hong Kong? Not sure I'm buying this one...
-And then to futher attempt to delay Domon, outside of Master Asia havin been a total pain in the ass, we has these unexplained attackers show up. The good news? Domon makes it with about 2 seconds left on the clock, as he ois greeted by everyone. And so... Let's get ready to Battle! Gundam Fight, BEGIN!

And this is why I've necro'ing this thread instead of reviewing... I'm only halfway through the series, and will probably keep posting as I see the episodes.

So apparently I guess I'll be the only commenting in this thread... but at least I'm seeing views. I guess that's what happens when you're 21 years late to a series

anyways, just watched the next two episodes...

Spoiler for 25 + 26. And about not seeing a recap episode so far...:

25- And here's the Recap Episode. DAMMIT (can you tell that I'm not a fan of these type of episodes?). Well, on one hand, at least it confined the recap to the first half. And naturally... Master Asia just. won't. go. away. I thought Kyoji and the Dark Gundam were supposed to be the main antagonists? Also, something I forgot to mention about 24- another WTF moment, as we have Schwartz looking like a clone of Domon... are we now going to incorporate some sort of time-travel BS? But back to 25. Doing some reading around the net, I can now see why G Gundam gets ridiculed- the supposed racism/stereotyping was rather blatant. Examples: Cobra Gundam from India, Tauros from Spain (looks like Bull too), Zebra from Kenya... yeah, welcome to the 90's. And then we have two opponents who Domon defeated earlier in the series as competitors? And Master Asia rides in on a gundam horse? The ridiculousness of this series sometimes... And to finish things off, three new rules, including being able to aim at the cockpit. I half wonder if Build Fighters drew some of its Scheming Chairman plot from this series.

Then we have 26. Once again, Domon plays the Insufferable Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Again, I half wonder why Rain just doesn't dump. Also, new opening. And while usually opening have only bits an pieces to actually do with the series, I have to ask... who the heck was the blue-haired fairy-girl in the new OP? Is that supposed to be Rain? But back to the episode. To naturally add drama to the episode, Domon's wandering takes him the Neo Greece's fighter, who the chairman has set up to face Domon... and Domon takes a beating. Next morning, he is saved by an old man and I assume his grandkids, giving a pep talk to help Domon, involving "wonderbugs" (i.e. spices... the placebo effect). Once again, Domon has to make an entrance... and so the fight begins. Domon has declared to win every single bttle, but is having some trouble against the Zeus gundam. At least he takes out the horse. And IMO, if the Zeus gundam had kept his foot on the God Gundam instead of taking flight (and if Domon didn't have Plot Armor), he might won... but taking to the skies, plus Rain giving Domon the Heads-up about Explosive burning finger (which is more impressive than Shining Finger, but I expect Burning Finger or whatever the Japanese version is to be spammed from now on) gives Domon the win. At least on the bright side, the incantation now ends in "tells me to seize victory". And on a side note... it appears Master Asia, while still throwing Domon into the lions' den, seems less evil towards him. Hm...

I actually like to comment, just like how I responded to Haak’s necro-ing Turn-A Gundam thread with his episode reviews. But the thing is, it has been so long since I watched G Gundam that I forgot many things about (of course, I still remember Shining Finger, the MC and “This hand of mine…..!!!!”). But I’m planning to re-watch the series when the BD is finally released and I want to make the most out of it so I let my memory about G fades away little by little so that I’ll enjoy the re-watch even more (that’s why I didn’t click your spoilers).

Assuming that one isn't out already, is there actually going to be a BD release of this series? Obviously there's DVD releases... but you'd think that after 20 years this series would have a BD release by now.

... and while I spoiled myself a bit (not saying about what), I can see myself re-watching this series every few years. It's certainly a bit ridiculous, but so far there's no war drama involved (there is other types of drama instead)

^ As far as I know, G Gundam BD box hasn’t been released yet. I’d say Sunrise/Bandai will eventually release the BD of all the Gundam series. After all, if the much-maligned Victory Gundam got its own BD release, there’s no way they’ll skip G Gundam which is a relative success in the franchise. But the thing is, Sunrise/Bandai really like to take their time in releasing each series BDs. Usually because they actually put a considerable effort to remaster & cleaning up the footage of the old series so that it’ll be a more presentable high-def presentation (Zeta, ZZ, Victory and Turn-A in particular are gorgeous in HD). And they even put more effort to add something new with each BD release (eg. brand new extra episode for 08th MS Team, Frozen Teardrop picture drama for Wing, Gundam Frag CG footage for ZZ etc). And IIRC they released Gundam 0083 BD only recently despite that series’ popularity. So yeah, I think patience is virtue in this case.

And so for the next episodes, as the tournament continues...

Spoiler for 27+ 28:

In 27, the pseudo-stereotyping continues, as not only is the Cobra Gundam from India, but we also have a guy with green skin and being a snake charmer as Domon's next opponent. I'm also noticing a theme here: this is the second time that Domon has faced his next opponent before the match and more or less been beaten in person. However, the other focus is on a fan who sees Domon get beaten, and therefore thinks he'll make a better pilot. Not to mention this fan is a kid who is probably only 10. We also might get the reason why Domon's martial arts seem to be plot-based: apparently he has to be expecting an attack... anyways, the kid tries to pilot Burning/God Gundam, and Domon has to save the kid. Unfortunately, he gets hurt in the process, and our Cobra Gundam pilot sees this. Naturally, in the match, he takes full advantage of Domon's injury. On a side note, the Cobra Gundam even rises from a basket... so how does Domon win this one? He remembers telling the kid that one wrong move will get him severely injured, and with Domon wrapped up by the Cobra Gundam... he actually goes and dislocates his own shoulder (OW)! I'll also note that Domon only does this after he receives an apology from the kid for tryin to pilot the Gundam and injuring Domon. Anyways, you can guess the rest: Burning Finger to finish off the fight.

Now 28... okay, we have a formula: Domon faces his next opponent, loses in person, then wins when in the Gundam. At least each of the fighters are unique, I'll give Sunrise that much. However, this is also the episode that pushed the Suspension of Disbelief to its absolute maximum. Anyways, this time an actual assassin is after Domon, and the guy has been winning all his fights by default (guess how?). And is where my theory that in order for Domon to be awesome at martial arts, he has to be expecting it comes in- Chibodee warns Domon to be careful, and then Domon tells him thanks, but he's already here. At which point domon is actually able to avoid the assassin. This leads to a chase, and we find out that the assassin is actually blind. Domon next tries to get the upper hand by getting inside the range of the assassin's staff... only to find that there's a hidden blade in the staff. And this is how Domon loses this round: he gets slashed on his shoulder. Chibodee rescues him, and then we find out more about the assassin. And this leads to Pushign the Envelope number 1: Apparently, the assassin was a former Gundam Fighter, until a loss in the finals caused him to lose his eyesight- all we see is the general explosion that we've seen several times before, but apparently this blinds our assassin (still plausible though). After this, Domon and co. run into the assassin again while Domon is training with Sai, and this is #2: the assassin is standing on one toe, on a leaf, in the middle of the bay! Domon chalks this up to seeing how much incredible concentration he has, but I'm not sure I buy that myself... anyways, this leads to #3: Chibodee sends a punch... an energy punch that causes a wave! And the assassin cuts through it. He also leaves after giving Domon a warning message. Anyways, Domon is trying to figure out how to deal with the assassin, and Schwartz shows up to remind Domon of the Serene State of Mind, tossing a log at him in the process. Which leads to #4: Domon still carries that rusty sword, and apparently going into SSoM causes it to become.. a lightsaber! Okay, that's actually just represnting that Dmon can cut with it, but still...! Anyways, we have the match, and all Domon can do is dodge the attacks, unable to counter. He uses SSoM, and launches the Burning Finger, which Chibodee comments is a bad idea, as the assassin will just block is... but this time, Burning Finger breaks through! This leads to a sword vs. sword showdown, where one move decides is all. After the slash, we see domon's arm is injured... but the Mandela Gundam (the assassin's), falls to pieces! This fight has also apparently "redeemed" the assassin, and Schwartz threaten the assassin's backers to either let him live or he'll release all info of who they've had him kill. This leads to our assassin vowing to somehow serve the families of all those who have been assassinated.

Spoiler for 29+ 30:

In 29... what's this, a non-Domon-focused episode?! This is about Sai Saici (Dragon Gundam and Neo China's pilot for anyone who doesn't know) first crush. His opponent will be against Neo Denmark, and I'm pretty sure the stereotyping here is a Hans Christian Anderson reference, as he's the guy who wrote the original Little Mermaid (and I'm not talking the Disney version here), and was from Denmark. The gundam is called the Mermaid Gundam, and its pilot is named... Hans. Anyways, the key point here is that the Mermaid Gundam can last at most one more battle, as it's pretty banged up. Later, as Sai wanders the city, he helps and old man and young girl by beating up some hoodlums. Sai and the girl, who's name is cecil, offer to run the old man's shop while he's injured. And yes, Cecil is Sai's crush, as he offers to meet her again and cook so the old man's shop is still running. We then find that Cecil is Hans's younger sister. So you can naturally guess the drama here... basically, once Sai finds this out himself, he doesn't want to fight. However, this si the reason: Should he beat Mermaid Gundam (and let's be honest, we know he somehow will), it means that Cecil and Hans will have to leave. Cecil still requests that he fights all-out against her brother. Anyways, as the match draws closer, the hoodlums from before show up... and because we have to have the Burning Gundam in every episode, Domon tells Sai and Cecil to get a move-on while he handles the hoodlums. So, the match. Turns out, Mermaid Gundam is pretty tough... and even more so when he manages to drag Dragon Gundam underwater. After Sai manages to create a smokescreen, Hans sees his arm ling on the bay bottom and stabs it, thinking he's won. Actually, Sai ripped off his own arm as a diversion, and smashes his pole through the head, giving him the win. The epsiode ends on Sai seeing Cecil and Hans leave, thinking that one day, they'll meet again.

And 30... hey, we get an actual female Gundam pilot! And she knocks out Argo (neo Russia) in less than a minute. And our trend here sorta breaks- Domon faces her, but in a battle game. She's managed to win all her rounds so far, and when she faces Domon... actually, then end up frying the system. And then we see the story behind Allenby (and Beardsley as her last name? Uh... well... I guess its creative?): she's the Mind-Controlled Science Experiment Girl. I have to ask, is this where the inspiration for Aila came from? Other than 00, which was an okay series and I didn't pay too much attention to, having Soma Peles, I don't know of any other gundam series that has done this type of character. And naturally, like Domon, she has no parents, and just wants to enjoy herself a bit, which means running into Domon and having dinner with the crew. Also, the stereotype: being from Neo Sweden, her Gundam appears to have long blonde hair. The match begins, and you can tell her and Domon are having fun as they battle. This leads to the Science Guy, namely the lead guy, going "screw this, you're winning this match" and activating her Berserker Mode. Domon takes a lot of hits, and just when you think he might even be down... Hyper Mode goes on, and he basically smashes Allenby out of Berserk with Burning Finger (except it's more of a beam than a fist...). This also fries the control board, and Domon attempts to get Allenby to face him just once more. A final punch is thrown (as Allenby attempts to do a Shining Finger, with no success), and Allenby falls when they connect. Interesting side note here: Master Asia remarks how Allenby could become a very strong fighter herself, which gives me a bad feeling...

And the preview... looks again to be a non-Domon episode! It also feeds upon peoples' fear of clowns, and Chibodee is our focus, and the pilot he faces is a literal clown. I almost feel like this episode may have been inspired by It, but I need to see the episode first. (which still won't help, as I've never actually seen It, and for good reason).

okay, so almost three months between posts... though more G gundam! I can understand why G Gundam gets ridiculed (being the first non-war Gundam series, plus how it really pushes the envelope of suspension of disbelief), but I'm still going to have to recommend it to anyone who likes shounen anime. Anyways, the episodes:

Spoiler for 31-33:

So in 31, we do have a Chibodee focused episode. I'm going to start jjust highlighting the important stuff at this point, or anything I find to be of interest.
- the enemy is a clown, and while at the circus Domon is goaded by said clown, and you can tell there's something up with it.
-Turns out, Chibodee actually has a fear of clowns, and considering he has to face this one, that's not good....
-And after Chibodee gets all pissed and dnies said fear, Rain pokes around and we hear the story: while at a circus in his childhood, Chibodee was separated from his mother when armed robbers dressed as clowns made an invasion, and Chibodee was taken hostage. Yeah, that'll screw up a guy.
-There is a way for Chibodee to get past this fear: apparently his favorite song is America the Beautiful (I really want to know what they did in the Japanese version now...), and Rain sings it for him
-Day of the math. As the battle commences, the cown definitely has the upper hand, between Chibodee's mindfuck, and the gundam being able to split in half (I should mention- the clown's gundam is a Jack-In-the-Box).
-What allows Chibodee to win is his own crew finally singing America the Beautiful (they tried to get rain to do so, but Domon is in attendance and that would be seen as betrayal), and snapped out of this funk, Chibodee takes out the damned clown.

In 32:
-The guys who have all been beaten by the Shuffle Alliance are getting togther, and they've been making small sabotages to the lives of those who they were defeated by- not that anything could be proved. Fortunately, Allenby catches wind of their scheme, and heads to warn domon.
-There's going to be an attack on a certain residence, and as Domon and co. head out to look... well, said residence goes up in flame, and our foe Michelob (the first guy ever defeated in this series) is apparently behind it...
-I previously mentioned that somehow both Chapman and Michelob were back in the fight, despite being DQ'ed officially. Well, Domon still has to face Michelob due to scheming in the background. And things look to basically be going Domon's way, despite all difficulties... until a smokescreen kicks into play
-The gundam being used by Michelob transforms... and the smokescreen keeps the audience from seeing this. Domon recognizes it as a Gundam that attacked him as he was going to the finals.
-However, Plot Armor kicks in, and he's able to take out this strange gundam... and we see that when the smokescreen finally clears, Michelob is back in his regular gundam. And Chairman Wong is not too happy about this...

And then 33:
-Some of the top brass behind Neo France are discussing about Master Asia and Chairman Wong, with one being for them and the other vehemently opposed.
-Marie-Louise is nearby, out for a stroll, when she hears an argument happening in a gazebo. There, she's witness to the anti-Wong being taken out by an assassin, and catches a third person's ring... having been witness to this, she is now attacked. And the assassin is Chapman!
-Georges runs over, and though unable to defeat Chapman, he does drivw him away, even as Domon and co. arrive. We then see some of our answer: Chapman has the DGC!
-And to top it all off, Wong is going to have these two fighters face each other
-In the arena, we learn of a protective barrier that keeps the bystanders from being injured due to the gundam fight, blocking all projectiles, etc.
-As Georges and Chapman battle, Michelon is behind the scenes... and turns off the barrier at just the right point, such that if Georges were to dodge, Marie-Louise would be hit by a gundam attack! Georges himself has taken a ton of damage, and can't take much more...
-It's Domon and co. to the rescue, as they climb the control tower and drive Michelob off, restoring the protective barrier just in time, as Georges dodges this attack.
-Cue another smokescreen, and another transformation. Akthough struggling early, Gundam Rose is ultimately able to take out this mysterious foe.
-Also, when Marie-Louise reveals about the ring, she is able to identify it as Chairman Wong;s ring, fully confirming he really is an evil scheming bastard
- Speaking of which, Wong does not like what appear to be all his shady plans falling one after another, and the next episode shows his next dirty trick...

Spoiler for 34- 36:

In Episode 34, we start to see the turn that G Gundam is going to take
- Allenby and Domon, both being fighters, have great chemistry, easily rivaling Domon. Does that start to give something away?
-Allenby installs a chip in Burning Gundam, and Rain tooses both of them out. Obvious jealousy, and Domon is Oblivious Shounen Blockhead
-Later, Rain sees Schwartz sneaking around the hotel, and follows him. What we have... is the Dark/Devil Gundam, Kyoji all bound inside, and Wong and Master Asia waiting for it to be fully awakened again (I KNEW we weren't done with this thing yet!)
-Schwartz makes an attack, which is repelled by Master Asia, then runs out, grabbing Rain in the process. Master Asia pursues, but ultimately, never actually sees Schwartz. and in a Dick Move, Schwartz makes it so that the Prime Suspect becomes Domon, and Wong is PISSED, especially since master Asia won't fight him.
- In return, Wong makes it so that Domon must face two Gundams at once. At least he gets Allenby as his partner
- In addition, Wong secretly places an electromagnet beneath the arena. This leads to Domon being unable to anything for a while during the match, and Allenby might be good, but she isn't good enough to face two at once.
-However, when going into Hyper Mode, the power of the new chip allows Domon to break free (and Rain starts to wonder if she's becoming useless to Domon). Tag team with Allenby, and their oppoonents basically crap their pants as Domon and Allenby win.
-Still convinced that it was Domon who saw the Dark Gundam, plus the victory, Wong rages and declares that now Domon will have to face... the other members of the shuffle alliance!

And so Domon vs. the Shuffle Alliance pt.2 starts, in Episode 35
-Having seen one of the heads of the Dark Gundam, despite Master Asia trying to hide it, Domon attempts to get the others to focus on that threat... but the other shuffle alliance members are more concerned about facing Domon. Unable to change anyone's minds, Domon thinks he should just screw the tournament and go after the Dark Gundam. However, rain reminds him that he's ultimately still trying to free his father.
-And Schwartz shows up to tell Domon that it will be their fists that do their talking in the upcoming matches (you could have just told him that this is at least partially your fault, you bastard...)
The first one up is Chibodee, and before the match he shows Domon his new move, which overwhelms Domon. This leads to Domon training with Allenby (and rain not too thrilled about how much time Domon is spending with Allenby)
-And we once again start the Domon First Gets His Butt Kicked But Plot Armor Allows Him To Win fights. Againt Chibodee, who has been training,m things appear to be all in Chibodee's favor.
-Chibodee tells Domon to get serious, and so he does...
-By going Ninja Mode! Chibodee's new power allows him to fire off multiple "energy shots", and Domon says that if you throw ten at me, I'll just become ten Gundams! So insert ninja clone trick here, as Domon ctahces all the attacks.
This of course means that when the two face each other head to head... we have a win for Domon and his Plot Armor.

Fortunately, the writers got a little creative from here on. In 36...
-Gundam Rose and Georges are next up, but Georges is told by his Prime Minister to forfeit the match, in order that Gundam Rose doesn't take any more damage until the battle royale. Georges is pissed, but when he tries to go to the match and defy orders, he is held back by security
- Wong laughs as Burning Gundam gets the default win, while master Asia says that now things are going to get interesting
-Georges is still a warrior, and ultimate;y takes Gundam Rose anyways. This sends all of neo Frances Reps into a panic, and as it's suggested Domon goes out to find him, he simply goes outside the houseboat where they appear to be always spending the night, and Naturally Georges and Gundam Rose rise right up next to them.
-They shall fight at sunrise on a hill, and of course the PM tries to get there, but it's too late.
-Domon seems to have the upper hand, and so Georges unleashes his latest move, a hurricane of Rose bits. Which makes it so that Domon is surrounded by an everlasting storm, but the training with Allenby shows off, as domon spins his sword is a fast cicles to cut them all down. Leading to his victory.
-The Pm tells georges he shall continue representing Neo France, and Master Asia and Chairman wong, conveniently watching the math... well, Master Asia remarks again about how warriors always communicate through their fists. Won still doesn't believe him, of course

And 37 is the latest one I've seen.

Spoiler for 37 and sai Saici:

-This episode is the Sai Saici episode
-As Sai Saici srtas another day of training but by his own terms, he ultimately comes across a letter from his father that has been in the possession of the other two monks so far. After he reads it, we see a change in his training...
-He is now very serious. One monk thinks it excellent, the other is worried.
-Also, the Neo China Emperor arrives, and tells Sai that his prowess has allowed him to ask anything of the Emperor as long as it is within his power. He asks for the revival of the Shaolin temple, and this surprises his guardians, as they didn't have to even prompt him. Which again, has one monk thinking this excellent, while the other is still suspicious
-Later, Sai drops by to see Domon and co., and ultimately coosk dinner for them. And instead of sparring with Domon... it's Allenby to he spars with.
-Thje two really go at it, and just as Sai seeems to be drawing upon a great power... he concedes. Domon, on the other hand, sees that this is some sort of farewell with the dinner, and wonders about the match.
-What worries Domon is that Sai is the only one who actually forced Domon into a draw. Add in Sai
s new training, and Domon knows this will he a high-risk fight.
-When the fight happens, both fighters give it their all, but slowsly Domon starts to gain the upper hand. We then lean what drives sai: the letter was his father's will, who is traveling so that he may see the world be he succumbs to illness. He may not have seen his son anytime recently, but his greatest wish is for sai to revive the Temple
-Because Sai has learned of this (and his guardians were saving this news until Sai came of age), he is willing to go to any method to now see the Shaolin temple revived, even if it costs him his own life.
-Domon is more than willing to answer sai's challenge, and Wong watching thinks that Domon might finally lose..
-However, Sai turns out to be moments away from annihilation, as he find out Burning Erupting Finger... and be used with BOTH hands! Just before Dragon Gundam goes boom, the Emperor recognizes the kamikaze attack (plus Domo's other hand attacking), and orders an end to the match. He says Sai foguth well, and that this is not the match to win, instead saving that for the battle Royale.
-Wong is still pissed about Domon not losing (It's called Plot Armor...), wile Master Asia just smiles, if darkly.

And the next one up is of course, the Argo episode... but with an interesting twist

-Argo is the only one who hasn't had a "rematch" against Domon, but we have two twists. First, it's going to be tag team, with Argo partnering with Andrew Graham (yes, he's apparently still in the fight, and is also wanting to kill Argo) and Domon with Allenby
-The second, sinister twist: since Wong is determined to get rid of Domon and other obstacles, he decides to use his own version of the Berserker system on Allenby (capturing a crew member of Neo Sweden to learn the code)
- Interestingly enough, even though the Berserker system is activated almost right away, it's mostly a Domon vs. Argo episode, with Andrew staying out of the way... and Allenby just remains offscreen
- Argo's newest technique is quite strong, and it gives Domon trouble, actually stopping his fist. However, the price is how much strain the technique puts on the Gundam, and Domon is able to take advantage of this, ultimately winning.
- Seeing how far Argo will go to protect people (considering he's fighting for his friends), Andrew finally understands Argo... just in time for Allenby to re-appear. The good news? She's still on Domon's side. The bad news? She's aiming right for Argo, who is in no condition to continue the battle. Andrew jumps in the way and sacrifices his Gundam at this point.
-With plenty of injuries on all sides, the medical team arrives. Now, Rain is a medical professional, but those coming for Allenby tell her to back off. The repercussion? When Domon tries to find her, he flips out on Rain for not staying with Allenby, basically calling Rain useless and unneeded.

The next couple episodes are what I believe to be a brief interlude before the final arc kicks in...

Spoiler for 39+ 40:

-In 39... well, from a 2000's progressive standpoint (remember, this was done during the mid-90's), it looks like Rain has finally decided to leave Domon, though apparently it'd more from seeming to be unneeded rather than not being able to put up with any more of his crap. But anyways
-Master Asia has his horse make contact with Domon, and he is brought to the outskirts of Hong Kong, the darkness that the light hides: while the city is full of life and prosperity, the outskirts show a wasteland of ruins, where it appears many lives were lost.
-Also, Domon's last battle before the battle Royale is to be against Schwartz. Master Asia believes Domon is currently unable to beat Schwartz (seriously, what the hell is going on with Master Asia and his loyalties?)... so he decides he will end Domon before the match! However, Master Asia has constant coughing, and their duel is ultimately interrupted by a gundam head from the Dark Gundam
-This sends them both underground, and as they walk along an old passage back to the mainland, we see a flashback to the one technique that Master Asia never taught Domon. Anyone remember this old trope? Here's a hint: the master teaches an ultimate technique to his pupil before the master ultimately dies, so I'm getting a very strong vibe of that here...
- Domon is forced to demonstrate his own use of this technique soon, as more Gundam Heads appear. A few side notes: Master Asia (who Domon tries to keep referring to as Undefeated of the east but slips up a few times) points out that Domon is also so concentrated on the "now" that he forgets what's truly important. And since they get above ground just as the Gundam Heads appear, we actually see master Asia's horse get the suit on, which explains how the horse gundam works.
-And naturally, Master Asia rides away on the horse, leaving Domon with more questions than answers...

-40 is truly an interesting episode. As Rain is still down about no longer being useful according to Domon (seriously, is this a 90s thing about remaining loyal to a guy who is a jerk? Granted, there's still those kinds of relationships going on today... but enough of my own thoughts on this), she sees someone who looks like Kyoji disappear into a warehouse.
-Following him, she actually comes across Shadow Gundam and Schwartz. As she converses with Schwartz, she feels like she's talking with Kyoji from back in the day...
-Schwartz points out the Domon is only capable of communicating with hsi fists, which is problematic for supporters like Rain. He makes her an offer: be domon's enemy for a round and support Schwartz
-Meanwhile, Wong continues being a bastard, as this ring is going to be special (so he can try to eliminate both Schwartz and Domon at once). The two have 10 minutes to finish the fight, and then the ring goes boom. And on the other hand, he's also got Allenby in a chamber, where he intends to draw out all her power for being the ultimate pilot of the dark Gundam...
-So we get to the match (side note: with rain having resigned, the brass of Neo Japan have given Domon a new crew)... and the first thing Domon sees is that Rain is now on Schwartz's team. In order to hide his anger/confusion, he continues to say he "doesn't need anyone, that he can fight by himself"
- Naturally, this means that as the battle goes on, Domon is getting his ass completely handed to him. It certinaly doesn't help that Domon is unable to use Hyper Mode due to a short circuit. And more than once, Rain srarts to call out, before hardening her resolve...
- Domon then remembers the old days, and how supportive Kyoji used to be. This leads to Domon rmembering who is supporting him: the Shuffle alliance, and Rain...
-And we havour flip: Rain rips off her mask as she decides to baxk Domon again, telling him how to bypass the circuit. Schwartz remarks that this is the Domon he wished to battle, and now Dpmon fires off the ultimate technique, just as the ring timer goes off...
-The ring goes boom, but Domon manages to escape. Schwartz is badly injured, and his mask comes off... revealing Kyoji! This was my WTF moment round 2. Ultimately though, we have Rain and Domon reunited. And it seems that the dark Gundam will be back next episode...

To be fair, G Gundam is the only Super Robot show in an otherwise Real Robot franchise. The ridiculousness of the show goes hand in hand with Super Robot tropes.

Sadly, I'm not familiar with most Super Robot stuff- I don't think SRW has even made it to American shores. However, despite these tropes, I can't say G Gundam is really a bad series. It certainly laid the groundwork for Build Fighters.

either Tomino is somehow a fan of this series as the Turn X even had the Shining Finger attack, the Destiny Gundam's 'Palma Fiocina' was close enough but its shown to be more of a ranged weapon instead of being just melee.

Well the Shining Gundam has an attack called Shining shot(can't remember if its from the palm or the forearm boosters) while God/Burning Gundam definitely has a ranged variation of God/Burning Finger(SEKIHA!).

Actually Model Suit Gunpla Builders was the one that actually laid the groundwork for GBF. Sekai was just aping Domon.

And SRW definitely made it to the west. SRT/SRW OG1 and OG2.

Been waiting ages for this, and it looks gorgeous. It's nice to have a confirmation after so long. I can finally started my re-watching of this silly-epic show soon .
