Gotta second Haibane Renmei. While significantly more light-hearted, you could also try Nanana's Buried Treasure. Other than that the closest I can think is one where a cute nun dies and becomes a demon, but I doubt you'd go for that one given the lineup you posted.

It's not an anime, but an animated music video, produced by Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki for the hugely popular 1980s pop duo Chage & Aska.

The animated short for the song, On Your Mark, features an angel-like character, who, in some iterations of the six-minute-plus video, does die. In other iterations — most importantly, the final one — she survives, and regains her freedom, with help from two policemen modelled after the singers Chage and Aska.

There's a long story behind the animated short, and it has the distinction of being one of the most obscure projects ever done by Miyazaki.

On Your Mark — told in a non-linear format and completely without dialog — follows two police officers and the angelic girl they try to save.

In the background, [Hayao] Miyazaki leaves hints that the world is enduring what looks like a long period of strife, but the film keeps things fairly intimate throughout.

Even without spoken words, the action is every bit as lush, expressive, and affecting as so much of the director's work — you really start to root for the main characters, a true sign of Miyazaki's skill.

We almost wish it were stretched out into a feature film.

THE VERGE

For copyright reasons, I've opted not to share the link to the music video. I'd just say that, as of the date of this post, there is only one upload of it with English subtitles. And it's not on YouTube.

Clannad kinda had a character like that though she didn't die, she was in coma.

Jigoku Shoujo in a way, main character used to be human. Her back story is revealed towards the end of season 1.

Sankarea - the girl turns into a zombie

Shigofumi will work too

Shiki might count.
