That was my first thought, actually.

My first thought was that Peco's bandage is just a red herring. It's meant to remind us of what happened with Koizumi, but is pure misdirection.

Maybe a detail of interest, but I don't think the manga ever talks about Koizumi's past and playing an injured friend. That's a little detail that Yuasa put in there. One of the many differences in the anime. Yuasa is actually putting in a lot more detail in general than there was in the manga.

On a side note, that shoe commercial with dragon at the beginning of the last episode had me in stitches. I don't know why but it amused the hell out of me..

The manga did talk about Koizumi's past.

So, who is the MAIN character? Even now, I still can't decide whether it was Peco or Smile.

As for the Bald Guy, I guess he will lost his fangirl soon?

I'm not sure what I expected when watching this show.

But I really like what I got.

I really love how the focus stays on all the characters, not just the 2 mains.
"Do you play the ping pong you believe in?" That's the basic question for all of them. Different players, different motivations and different goals. That's why I don't mind the obvious foreshadowing. In fact it makes things more interesting. There's no doubt in my mind that Smile will go for the win against an uninjured Peco next time they'll play. But what he will do if Peco's indeed injured, will really show his development.
I loved to see him actually reaching out to a teammate to share the enjoyment, and Peco's commitment. Also Peco's family
And poor Dragon, the pressure on him is even worse than I expected. Even that hiding in the toilet runs in the family

The moment where Smile and his captain are just doing a simple rally together is probably my most favourite scene this episode. It's just simple pure joy of playing table tennis, nothing competitive on the line, no personal changes. It's just two people playing the game like it should be. After all those character changing moments in all those previous matches, this is a great emphasis to the theme this week as well: the joy of the sport itself.

Episode 8 "The Hero Appears"

Smile: Welcome back, Hero

Epic match between Peco and Kong.

Other than that, we also get to see how Kong has totally won over his teammates.

Kong's success in ping pong seems to be inversely tied to his likeability and character development.

Watching this episode was hard because I really like Kong now and seeing him crushed in 2nd round was harsh. And the same time I also like Peco, this show got me emotionally conflicted. You want everyone to win , but of course reality doesn't work that way.

I didn't want everyone to win - just Wenge and Peco.

The story is on the home stretch now. Time for everyone to exorcise their own demon, through victory and defeat.

History will just simply record that Kong drop out in 4th and 2nd round in consecutive years, without paying any attention to the quality of the opponent that knocked him out. He just has a terrible draw, otherwise he certainly has the ability to get into top4 in either one of those two years.

It was tough to see my two favorite characters pitted against each other as early as the second round. Kong didn't deserve to drop out of the competition so soon, but that's how these tournaments work. He won't get a chance to get his revenge on Kazama, at least not this year. Better luck next time.

Peco has made stupendous progress in only a year. It's hard to believe this is the same guy who wouldn't even score one point against Kong. The hero is definitely back! I wonder how he compares to Tsukimoto now. He should be close to his level.

Poor China

He said he wanted to win it to earn his ticket back home. But he lost.
And we see the image of the plane leaving without him.

So does this mean he's 'stuck' in Japan? He was talking about being exiled in other countries, so right now he's exiled to Japan.
At least he made bonds with his teammates.

This show makes no bones about the idea of talent being consistently superior to hard work. At least when it comes to table tennis. I guarantee you that Peco's year-long work regime doesn't stack up to the work Kong has put in his whole life, and yet he blew him up.

I vote for Peco...He's more interesting character so far

and to rub the salt in the wound, Wenge is by no means "have no-talents"

some people are just significantly blessed more

What a difficult match to watch, I love both Kong and Peco as a character and it's heart wrenching to see them pit against each other this early in the tournament but I guess that's how it goes.

Still, rather sad to see Kong lose his ticket home again. I do hope there's some consolation for him at the end of everything. Peco finally got his chance to be than just a clown, atleast he is now a clown that can actually back his confidence with ability and actual hard work.

Next week should be interesting to see Peco go up against Kazama.

Frankly I had a massive dissonance watching this episode. The hero emerges? Really? From my perspective it's Kong that deserves that title far more than Peco and yet the story continues to trample all over the guy. I don't hate Peco by any means but I don't see anything great about his character, especially when compared to Kong. Probably the first episode I actually disliked.

That was purely from Smile's perspective. No doubt there was something going on between them way back then that started the toxic relationship they had.
