Interesting episode. Welcome to hell in the form of a pre-crime, police state akin to Minority Report. The system seems efficient, sometimes even brutally so and people submit to it and live in harmony (surface harmony, chaos just directly below). These fictional worlds always make me think that if group think, belief in the state and the "go-along-to-get-along" mentality further crystallized in our world, many years in the future some dominating prison grid society will manifest in our world too. Sometimes I think, if many things go wrong, we could be there too.

This series has got nothing on Ergo Proxy or Texhnolyze, but it was still enjoyable.
It's easy to tell why Urobuchi Gen chose Akane to be this kind of protagonist - he's going to shred her naivety to pieces. Problem is I have a little difficulty accepting that such a person could train to work in the field and be THIS naive. Just a little nudge on my suspension of belief, and I normally am not that concerned about this stuff. Also I hope Gen has something a little more complex in store here, I don't want this to be as simple as Minority Report. Who knows though. Aesthetically it's quite a pleasure to look at, and I love the direction, but the content still leaves me unsure. It's definitely going to be entertaining I imagine, but will it truly be greatness? That's what I am wondering, so far I don't see it yet. Yes I hold cyberpunks to high standards.

Watched the first episode. I saw a lot of night and darkness and rain and neon lights and other stuff that unsubtly screamed out "LOOK, THIS IS A DYSTOPIA!" in my face. I hope we'll see the more sunny, polished side of the city eventually, or else I think I'll get grimdark poisoning.
This anime could go anywhere, really. I'll be keeping a cautious eye on it. |

Aah i miss you so much, Akira Amano's character designs. Ever since Katekyo Hitman Reborn anime ended prematurely in the late 2010 i keep yearning to see your magnificent character designs again, and eventually my patience was paid off.
Nice start. Nice OP. Nice characters, and nice animation quality. Although the plot is still vague, i will wait patiently for the next episode to know more. |

God, I don't mean to bash the summer lineup, but the fall season is shaping up to be such an embarrassment of riches.
Urobuchi likes to make his more unstable villains just relatable and sympathetic enough to make them uncomfortable, while keeping them monstrous enough to be threatening. Who doesn't go through times in their life when to some degree, we just want to keep our heads down, and hope polite society can't tell what we're really thinking? Extend that feeling to a dangerous person, and suddenly you have the whole reason the psycho-pass system exists, as well as the argument for why someone might argue that it shouldn't. I don't think it's entirely coincidental that in the cases of both of the people brought to "justice" by the dominator, fear of the punishment for latent criminality was the catalyst to turn them imminently dangerous. Also of note, Akane's sympathetic approach to handling the victim was first responsible for escalating the apprehension to the point where it went out of control, but she was then able to forcefully use the same approach to deescalate the threat when the others were ready to destroy the target. Was she right or wrong? Yes and yes. No easy answer. |

few things people conveniently forget:
1. They are short on personal. Why? Is it because of the danger on the field? The lack of interested new recruits? or not enough qualified people to work with? 2. Akane is the best from the academy. Does it mean if she's suitable for the job? Not necessarily, it just means that she's the best possible candidate available from the cohort. 3. This first case is the worse possible scenario for a rookie to start her assignment. I'd assume that normally it's just robbery or escaped people who refuses restrain orders, something that eases the new trainee into the organisation without too much stress on them first up. As to why they assigned Akane to it, there's a possibility that it's either things escalated very quickly, or there are worse (initially thought) cases elsewhere that drain up the people available. We don't really know what that world is like outside of this case. As many people have already pointed out that the system is flawed, it won't surprise me to see if the public is also (passively) against it as well. Again, too many questions since it's only the first episode.

In the great words of Alonzo in Training Day, "It takes a wolf to catch a wolf, you either a sheep or a wolf". Makes sense why they'd hire criminals, no need for a conscious to make doubts pop up in your head, need someone who can pull the trigger without hesitation. And while it does seem extreme at the moment, the emotional trauma the woman was put through IS the kind of stuff that can put people over the edge, so the system judging her as a future threat probably wasn't wrong. This anime will probably question to what extent can that be manipulated and changed for the better.

I mean, it's obvious a rape victim would be unstable enough to be a potential threat to herself and others. You don't need a futuristic speaking gun to tell you that. The issue is, what do you do with such a person? Do you treat her like the victim she is and provide her with the appropriate psychological and physical help, or do you put a paralyzing gun on her head and send her to their hellish "rehabilitation" camp? It doesn't take much to realize this "system" is pile of cr@p.

it's all about trusting the system. If you have confidence in it, then you wouldn't show off much criminal coefficient when scanned.
As regard to the victim. How many times have we seen unstable victims causing more harm to the rescue team? A drowning person is hard to console properly. While I fully disagree the system and the way it treats them, it certainly would work *in theory*. Why spend time risking a complication when you can just taze them and leave it? As shown by the "kill-first, ask questions later" attitude in the design of the dominator, the society in Psycho Pass might be less tolerant to crime and more focused on the result, than the one we live in.

Because that's the point. This is not Minority Report's pre-crime. This system can't see the future. They don't know if you're going to commit a crime. All they know, based on your current mental state, is that you might be a threat. And that's enough to take you in (or kill you).

Goddamn, what a shitty world! A computer making the call to execute people or drag them to some kind of obviously unpleasant "therapy," based entirely on their mental states, which as we've seen might be the result of being a victim, and not even permanent. Anybody going through trauma or stress might get tagged for elimination. And the police and society just go along with it. How the hell did that world get to that point?!
And as for Akane, how the hell can she be so idealistic when the rest of the world is obviously so cynical?

I'm sure Akane was shocked and in the episode Masaoka also said that what she learned in the academy are very different with the reality on the field and she was very unfortunate that she got a disturbing case as her first. I don't know why and how she was assigned to the job though....
