What's up with the sexy supernatural beings?

Nowadays there are too many sexy vampire shows and mangas and ghost stories involves sexy beings, etc. I mean these things are not new, but I noticed that the frequencies of these shows and mangas are increasing past few years. The classic monsters, vampire, ghost, werewolf, etc are getting more sexy and beautiful. I remember that they used to make me scared.

p.s. may be twilight has something to do with it

In the past, monsters are made up to scare people. To explain mystery deaths or super-nature events.

Now they are made to entertain us (especially in anime industry). Of course their designs would be changed

Well, in the case of catgirls, there's lots of money to be made in cosplay accessories you can convince girls to wear for photos and life sized wallscrolls of characters like Eruruu from Utawarerumono.

Not that I happen to have first hand experience with such things or anything.

They've been trying to make Dracula sexy for a long time now. Able to seduce women with a glance. What they generally didn't do was make him young and sexy.

Everything else was suppose to be scary aside from angels and the like.

Anime is all about merchandising now. More moe = more merchandising.

It's not really new. Take a look at Yuki, a Yuki Onna, from Urusei Yatsura. Or D and Miyu, respectively from Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Princess Miyu.
Even western media had sexualized supernatural beings, vampires being of course the easiest. There was such artworks dating back from like the end of the victorian period. And in movies, I can name the movie Near Dark.

Back to japan.

What is more marketable as hungry ghost to the otaku?

Him?

Or Her?

Nah, making something scary has gone much harder to do properly. I used to be afraid of the Aliens (the movies) but now it is just pop-corn material. Real fear is now of the unknown type. A monster is scary when you DON'T see it rather than making it as ugly as possible. Think of monsters in Resident Evil next to the ones in Silent Hill. The later ones are damn scarier because you DON'T clearly see them in the fog or the dark.

So when the idustry is making monster that must be seen a lot, they make them as sexy as possible because sex sells. They aim to make them exotic by having Charisma 22 and 25 ranks in Charm rather than Intimidate, if you get my drift.

The most vivid example I know are Elves who in traditional folclore stories are dangerous and deceiptful being that plague men but in MMORPGs they now turned to this sex symbol Many Men Online Role Play Girls trope.

Oversexed elves are as old as D&D. MMOs having nothing to do with it.

Don't tempt ZUN. He did it with a Karakasa and a Nue.

Actually, they are as old as Tolkien's The Hobit. The thing is, up until MMORPGs came along, they were not seen as such by those not reading epic fantasy. Because who would want to play an ugly Orc or a scary looking Elf on the net? It would be hard to gain the trust of others. Yet, do some push ups with the cute butt of the Elf and everyone wants to be in your team. Even if in real life you are 50 yo fat guy.

Where were you when Lodoss came around? Deedlit and Pirotess were pretty much the hot thing back in the day.

Lodoss was unheard of back then in the Balkans where I live. I personaly watched it a few years ago and the feeling was no longer appealing. Just like the books, very few people outside anime fans knew of such types of Elves before Lineage.

Maybe if you have considered things from other points than yours you would not have said that.

What other points? I was amongst the first in my generation to know of Tolkien's books and I never heard of Lodoss outside of vague references to magazines. Anime fans were really scarse in my country until recently and now that they are many, most like soft porn series full of gays and lesbians in trendy clothes. Hell, I didn't even knew of the sexualization prior to playing FF7 on PSX. It was still quite pure and political correct until then.

Was the OP asking about anime or movies/film/books in general?

Sexy supernatural beings are cyclic fads, at least in the latter. Wait 20 years and you'll see them resurge again after they fade.

Sexy supernatural beings are Older Than Dirt.

The Sirens, anyone? Circe? The goddess Aphrodite? Dryads, sylphs and nymphs?

Mythology, especially Greek, Roman and Norse mythology, is rife with beautiful, magical beings.

Yes, very nice, but you missed the point. All those were beautiful from the start. Vampires and Elves became sexy much later on. Female Dwarves in Lineage are chibi anime characters and female Orcs in Warcraft are pro wresler models. Hell, even the 4th edition of D&D went overboard.
Why is everything supposed to be sexy? Heck, even modern demons are made to look GAR while angels are these yaoi transvestites. It is really getting irritating. Succubi were supposed to be the only ones having this feature. Nowadays, everyone is a Succubus!
