@Skaddix: Yeah, hopefully he'll send someone worthwhile to Ryou and Alice. They don't deserve anything less.
And yeah, I agree about the spoiler with you guys. Thanks for the spoiler, Noman.

Dojima: The winner is Hayama. The bear meat he cooked was beyond godlike. This is complete victory of Hayama. Hayama: I won..again, but I've decided not to expel you because you are so much fun. *Take out a cellphone* *Make a call* This is Hayama, Soma passed the exam. Rindo: I don't mind with your decision because plot. Hayama: Work harder Soma, I am looking forward for my 4th win on you. Soma: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Dojima: This is lucky turn of event for you. By the way, I knew someone that you should be friend with..His Eng name is..Ash and Satoshi in Japan, I think. |

Though it IS on the writer for creating a situation where Soma cannot lose because of plot armor. That's the biggest failing of the Central "arc". |

That's kind of the standard for every shounen manga hero though, no one really expects the main protagonist to die in any of those other series do they? It's all about the journey in these kinds of stories cause some things are inevitably written in stone in order for it to function in the first place.

But really, outside of a couple of previous matches (vs Nikumi, vs Mimasaka), Souma didn't have this level of plot armor. vs Shinomiya was a bit different since they DID lose, but that whole thing was character building and no one was expelled. The main point being that it didn't use to be a constant string of "do or die" battles. There was tension most of the time. Every battle since Central started has gone exactly as expected, even the match against Tsukasa where he should have lost with consequences. Instead, he lost but the consequences were hand-waved, as we mostly expected because plot armor. At this point they might as well not even cook and just gloss over it like they did the second half of the Stagiaire. |

Because they're tournaments, in the actual battle arcs with the bad guys which I consider the Central Arc to be, with things on the line all the MC get plot armor in one way or another cause dragon ball revival or something.
Hey first off, if the match with Shinomiya was character development then so was his half of the Stargire Arc so let's get that straight. And if some of the secondary characters go at some point then I expect the tension will ramp back up again, we'll see but I really don't see how this is any worse then any other shounen series with Natsu,Luffy, Ichigo, or Naruto or whoever going into a fight where convenient plot twists will fall their way

Stagiaire was a month. They only showed two weeks (week 1 with Hisako, week 2 with Shinomiya). That's what I meant by glossing over the second half. We have no idea where he went or what he did in weeks 3 or 4.
And being "not any worse" than generic shounen when it used to be vastly better isn't really a positive thing... |

^Ah, alright, to be fair they could be saving that for an appropriate situation, ie Kurokiba's spice shop flashback during his Survivor Hunt battle.
I'm just saying that there's not a lot of wiggle room when your in this type of setting, since the main character can't outright lose otherwise it shuts down the whole story, so I'm treating this more as once again character development, seeing how Soma's skill has improved along with how his relationship with others, such as Erina, continues to evolve.

Well in those mangas there is a chance a good guy might die. Theoretically of course. It never happens in Bleach or Fairy Tail. And it doesn't happen often in Naruto or One Piece. Compared to that Expulsion isn't really the same level. But yes the main protag cant die or at least its rare enough before the very end. Still maybe a few expulsions of some lesser Polar Star Members and other Rebels would be good motivation to add some stakes. Granted I don't expect Soma to lose and leave unless he goes on a road trip with dad to train up before coming back to kick butt. But surely we can toss some of the rest.
