Is there a significance to the name "Porter Robinson" in this case? The only person I can google up with that name is this one, and I'm not sure he's the one being referred to here... unless he inexplicably is

Yup, it's him. His new concert tour is also called "Shelter", so it is quite original way for PR.

I assumed it was just a music video? Is it something longer?

Does anyone have a summary about the plot of the series or at least a little detail of what are we going to see?

Absolutely beautiful!

Well that was depressing. So he saved her life... only for her to end up floating alone in the middle of nothing for who knows how long (clearly it's been years), on resources that are probably not unlimited.

The love a parent can have their child truly knows no bounds. That was both heartwarming and sad.

Around 7 years more or less, just floating in space alone

I do kinda feel like this premise could be expanded into at last a 3-4 episode OVA, just to flesh out the story a bit more, and preferably with a better ending than just drifting in space for eternity.

Edit:

From reddit, here's the translation of the message that arrived for Rin:

Spoiler for message:

That was beautiful. I'd definitely watch it if they turned it into a full-length movie.

You know your point about the resource made me think about the technology used here to keep her alive thus far.

It doesn't seem like a conventional cryogenic technology since her body is still growing and her brain is also active. So how was it possible to keep her a live for 7 years? So my point is perhaps the limited resource would be enough to sustain her a lifespan as long as she stay in that state. We don't know where that rocket is heading toward either. Perhaps it is going toward the nearest M-planet. Alpaha Centauri is only 4 light years away. Half of light speed would take about 8 years to get there, so in an essence she is a star traveler. And during her journey if she comes across an alien race that can bring her out of her comatose state, her dad's will for her to carry on is a success.

See, it's not all too bad. Her dad was not without hope no matter how absurd it seemed as soon as he made the choice for her to live.

She'll create a new world of virtual life forms. It seems like that's what that world creator might ultimately be for. Otherwise he could just stick her in a endless chain of simulations until she dies or she gets rescued by aliens.

Now this is an awesome analysis of the piece I found (somewhat reformatted so it isn't a wall of text):

So, we all know that her father created this virtual reality for her and the purpose of the virtual reality is supposed to keep her happy. THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO THIS VIRTUAL WORLD THAN Y’ALL THINK. It’s not even the typical virtual reality that we all are used to.

Her father gave her the base platform/blank slate/starter kit to this world. That touch screen she holds isn’t just a fragment of her imagination. Her father PURPOSELY made sure that touch screen was a part of that world so she can easily use it to control her own virtual reality. She just didn’t come up with the idea of the touch screen herself but it was her father’s idea because he sent her into space as a CHILD. He made the process of letting go of reality as easy as possible for her. Notice how the touch screen has simple tasks and allows her to DRAW her virtual reality in the most generic and simple outline forms; yet, it creates such beautiful and detailed platforms and environments for her. He legit fucking made sure the possibilities were endless for her because he had to let her go as a child.

He could have left her in a fully constructed environment already with like a city or small town or even a virtual family or even duplicate himself and lie about reality itself. But he chose to give her the ENTIRE world that she can create herself to build her own happiness. He wanted her to forget about it all and him by letting her take advantage and distract herself with mindful of creativity and wonder.

He might have suppressed her memories for a while or even then she might have accepted the fact that she’s truly alone in her world. Like the scene where she touches the swing and it triggers her virtual reality to slowly come a part? The virtual reality just isn’t about her imagination running wild. It triggered that world to replay memories she had with her father that she may have suppressed for years. She could have made a virtual reality of just her father and her living happily together. She could have made up her father and long lost mother as well but why didn’t she? Because she temporarily forgot about those memories. Like the after letter that her father sent he mentioned that he just wanted her to forget it all so she wouldn’t be lonely and wish he could have gone with her. He didn’t want to make a an entirely fake world full of happiness for her. He truly wanted her to create her own happiness. He wanted her to determine her own pathway to happiness. Not a completely twisted, perfect, fake world.

I don't think I've seen so much emotional impact in a short Anime since Makoto Shinkai's first work Voices of a distant star. That's pretty high praise: the visuals were great, the animation goes without saying and they manage to pull major impact out of 6 minutes without even anyone talking in a way that puts many full length movies to shame. 10/10, would view again.
