Cool The Official Athens '04 Olympics Thread

The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad.

Who's looking forward to it?

How will the Opening Ceremony fare?

Who will topple the Medal Tally at the end? (Surely it's a 4-way tussle between the United States, Australia, Russia, & China.)

Who will win more gold? Phelps or Thorpe? I'm certainly eyeing out for the Australia v United States showdown in the swimming.

It seems to me that the focus of the media reports about the olympics are all about the excellent security as opposed to the actual games or the athletes themselves... which I find very sad...

anyways... it's good to see the Olympics back in it's country of origin... I'm probably going to watch the opening ceremony on the tv... also, I predict Team USA winning another set of gold medals for basketball... other than that... the Olympics doesn't interest me as much as it did in the past...

I should have made this thread...

The situation right now is quite funny as several people have been nagging about security for months and now that there is tight security and everyone is feeling safe the same people are complaining about their privacy and rights.... funny, huh?

Now that the foreign media have stopped nagging and started congatulating instead(irony?) perhaps we can forus on the important part... the games.

Dont expect me to post any pictures from the opening ceremony as cameras are not allowed so I wont be taking mine

Those of you who wish to see the results can visit this page: http://www.athens2004.com/en/results/results

Another sport thread started by scrumhalf .

I´m not 100% in olympic tv watching mood yet, but I think I will watch as much of the games as possible.
I will skip the opening and ending ceremony, I´m not really interested in it.

Probably not 100% fair but these nations look like the united superpowers of doping to me .
With the exeption of Australia of course.
I also remember my own countries sins in the past, like the east german state doping. Female german sprinters who had to shave themselve .

I have more respect for smaller nations who do not take this for some kind of national medal war and cheat like hell (or have chaeted in the past) to be the number one.

So go Australia go, I support you .

Some events have already started by the way.
The female german soccer team beat china 8:0 if my memory serves my right .
Our females are great. They will win much more medals then the males again.

You couldn't have just used the already-established olympics thread on the first page of this forum?

Threads merged.

The ceremony was nice, did everyone like it? It took me a little over an hour to get back home from the stadium.

All I have to do now is use my other tickets as well

ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm at my 100% Olympic Mood!!!

Go Malaysia!!!!!!!!!! Get that Badminton GOLD MEDAL, Roar!!!!!
Oh yea~ I've been waiting for 4 years now i got it.....
What a great Opening Ceremony. Got to give Greece a great applause for making it such a grand opening.

Well, is sure nice to see the Olympic games back to it's origin country.

Roar~~!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder when is the Olymipic Taekwondo Match going to be held?? Can't wait to see that.
The Opening Ceremony really get my blood boil... can't believe my eyes in that minute... The fire works, the Musics, and everything.. Is...Is... too GRAND and Magnificient!!!

I almost fainted infront of my Tv... My entire family was too amaze till we didn't even go to the toilet for that entire opening ceremony. I should have gone to Athens *sob* *sob* I can only watch through the tv screen.

Due to September 11 case, security is important. So is understandable. Besides, those who have gone to the ceremony, i wonder how much is the ticket??

Looks like the Tae Kwon Do competition is going to conclude the games.

I think it's gonna commence on the 26th of August.

i watched the opening ceremony on TV--or, at least, some of it. i'm not a real big Bjork fan.

the actual lighting of the torch was okay, though i had some rather un-olympic thoughts about what the actual torch reminded me of as they were lighting it. but that's neither here nor there

More of a football (soccer) guy me though, and the Premiership has just started up again so I guess ill mostly be watching that.

I heard that the Iranian judo champion is not going to participate because he might go up agianst an israeli judo competitor--Some thing about a beef between iran and israel is holding him back.

Is this true?

Ian Thorpe and Michael Phelps both take their first gold medal !

Phelps was very impressive in his 400m medley, while Thorpe won his gold barely. I can't wait to see those two racing against each other . Phelps takes the psychological lead

But most importantly : Belgium won it's first medal Bronze for Axel Merckx !!!

Well, the French judoka did quite well, considering that she was up against Ryoko Tani, who was world champion six times.
